The Value of Patch Testing With Shoe Material Samples in Patients Suspected of Shoe Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Patch testing is the standard diagnostic tool for shoe allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). As shoe materials change over time, utilizing commercial allergen series might be ineffective. However, because testing with patients' shoe samples is laborious, its value is questioned. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to ascertain the benefits of patch testing with patients' shoes by comparing the frequencies of patch-test positivity of shoes and shoe-related allergens in baseline series for suspected shoe ACD patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of patients with clin…

After the Foot has Healed: Shoes and Braces.

The prevention of diabetic foot complications requires a comprehensive approach that includes the use of appropriate footwear, custom orthotics, insoles, hosiery, and braces. Clinical evidence supports the efficacy of these interventions in reducing the risk of foot ulcers and amputations as well as providing the diabetic patient the ability to maintain mobility safely. As the global burden of diabetes continues to rise, health care providers must prioritize foot care and recommend appropriate devices as part of routine diabetic management.

Toe Box Shape of Running Shoes Affects In-Shoe Foot Displacement and Deformation: A Randomized Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-distance running is popular but associated with a high risk of injuries, particularly toe-related injuries. Limited research has focused on preventive measures, prompting exploration into the efficacy of raised toe box running shoes. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of running shoes with raised toe boxes on preventing toe injuries caused by distance running. METHODS: A randomized crossover design involved 25 male marathon runners (height: 1.70 ± 0.02 m, weight: 62.6 + 4.5 kg) wearing both raised toe box (extended by 8 mm along the vertical axis and 3 mm al…

Designing suitable shoes to prevent foot frostbite through optimization of the geometric dimensions of the shoe and sock model.

To prevent frostbite in cold environments, proper dimensions and materials for different parts of shoes along with the optimal design of shoe geometry were investigated. Furthermore, the optimal geometry of shoes was computed using an optimization algorithm to provide maximum thermal protection for the foot while having the lowest weight. The results showed that the length of the shoe sole and the thickness of the sock are the most effective parameters in foot protection against frostbite. Using thicker socks, which only increased the weight by roughly 11%, enhanced the minimum foot temperatur…

Rental shoes are not a source of tinea pedis.

INTRODUCTION: Tinea pedis is a common disease that affects up to 70% of adults during a lifetime. Most cases are caused by Trichophyton species. Worldwide, terbinafine resistance among dermatophytes is rising, which is concerning as terbinafine is the first-line treatment. Due to concerns regarding potential epidemics, this study was conducted to investigate whether rental climbing and bowling shoes are a source of societal spread. METHODS: A sampling was conducted on 103 pairs of rental climbing shoes and 102 pairs of bowling shoes across four climbing clubs and four bowling clubs, utilising…

Rock-Climbing Shoes: A Survey of Attitudes and Practices.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature regarding rock climbing footwear. Rock climbers anecdotally voice numerous complaints regarding … limbed 5 to 10 hours/week. Eighty percent identified as intermediate or advanced climbers. Climbing shoes were an average of 0.83 size smaller than the climber's street shoes. The more elite the climber, the greater the mismatch. Overall satisfaction with current rock-climbing shoes was 88%; however, as the age of climber and number of years of particip …

Effects of high heeled shoes on gait. A review.

BACKGROUND: Walking in high heels (HH) may alter gait in various ways, which may be of importance to designers and physicians. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does walking in high heels alter gait and how can this be explained from a biomechanical and control point of view. METHODS: Relevant literature has been collected in which high heeled walking was studied, after which the results were bundled and interpreted in a framework of biomechanics and control. RESULTS: Major changes were found in the rollover function of the feet, the ankle and knee joints and the lower back, while step length and bala

Corrective shoes for children: a survey of current practice.

A survey of shoe-prescribing practices for children was taken among pediatricians, orthopaedists, pediatric orthopaedists, and podiatrists. Opinions differed significantly regarding the usefulness of shoe modifications for common pediatric lower limb and foot problems. Parents' attitudes toward children's shoes were also surveyed. Pediatricians and pediatric orthopaedists tended to prescribe corrective shoes less often than did orthopaedists and podiatrists. High topped shoes are not necessary to promote normal foot development, in the opinion of 85% of those surveyed; however, high topped sho…

[Shoe factory workers, solvents and health].

Exposure to organic solvents in footwear manufacturing industry came from the glues used adhering the shoe parts to each other. Benzene was the first solvent used in shoe factories until the evidence of its capacity to cause leukaemia. Then, the demonstration that exposure to n-hexane was related to distal polyneuropathy limited the use of this substance. After that, results of neurotoxicological studies conducted on workers exposed to different mixtures of organic solvents make necessary prevention measure directed to a progressive reduction of air dispersion of these chemicals. Today exposur

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in a horse-shoe kidney.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN) represents an unusual suppurative granulomatous reaction to chronic infection, often in the presence of chronic obstruction from a calculus. We present a case of XGPN in a horse shoe kidney in an adult. Hemi-nephrectomy of the involved side was followed by clinical improvement. The case highlights the importance of early hemi-nephrectomy in XPGN with horse shoe kidney.

The effect of a slider shoe on hemiplegic gait.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of a slider shoe on the gait speed and energy efficiency of hemiplegic gait. DESIGN: A-B-A single-case design to compare walking with and without the slider shoe. Results were assessed graphically using the 2SD method. SETTING: Stroke unit of an NHS general hospital in the UK. SUBJECTS: Four acute stroke patients undergoing gait rehabilitation. INTERVENTION: Walking practice with and without a slider shoe worn over the real shoe of the weak leg. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Gait speed (10-m walk test) and energy efficiency (Physiological Cost Index). RESULTS: Al

A study of in-shoe plantar shear in normals.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify features of in-shoe plantar shear in asymptomatic adult gait. DESIGN: In order to standardize footwear conditions and facilitate later comparison to patient groups, measurement is made in a group of adults walking freely in stock orthopaedic footwear. BACKGROUND: Better data on plantar shear is required to complement well-documented pressure data for an overall picture of plantar stress. METHODS: Measurements were made locally beneath the medial four metatarsal heads and heel using biaxial transducers mounted flush into an inlay. Pressure distribution was also measure
