Sialography is of value for showing opaque or nonopaque stones in the maxillary glands. Possible complications (inflammation, abscess and fistula) can also be shown. Acute and chronic inflammation and sialadenoses show typical pictures. The diagnosis of tumors is less certain, genignity or malignity cannot be determined.

Twenty-seven patients with sialolithiasis were examined using functional subtraction sialography developed by the authors. Differential diagnostic signs characterizing the degree of involvement of the salivary gland were defined. High efficacy of the method helps correctly plan the treatment strategy.

Sialographic examinations with the digital subtraction technique were performed in 107 salivary glands (90 parotid and 17 submandibular) of 99 patients. Diagnostic and technical advantages of the digital imaging and subtraction for sialography were investigated. Superior quality enabled detailed imaging of the entire ductal system. Reduced radiation exposure, short examination time and almost painless examinations with good patient tolerance proved to be the major advantages of digital subtraction sialography as a diagnostic tool.

BACKGROUND: Accessory submandibular gland is a very rare anatomical variant. There have been only 6 reported cases of this entity in the English literature, only 1 of which was identified using magnetic resonance imaging.

Ultrasonography (US) was evaluated as noninvasive method to determine salivary gland involvement and compared with sialography in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and patients with only objective xerostomia and/or xerophthalmia. CONCLUSIONS: Sialography reveals distinct features in IgG4-RS, especially in submandibular glands, characterized by diminished or interrupted secondary and tertiary ducts without peripheral duct dilation, aiding differentiation from SS and COP/COS.
