[Genetic analysis of tick-borne encephalitis virus strains from West Siberia].

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains were isolated in West Siberia in the forest-steppe region near the Ob river in 1981-1992. Hybridization of genome RNA of 46 TBE strains with [32P]cDNA of TBE Sofyin strain revealed essential differences in the genomes of West-Siberian and Far-Eastern Sofyin strains of TBE virus. Nucleotide sequences of 6 TBE strains (1348-1503 n.) have been determined. A 89-98% homology of Siberian TBE strains has been shown, while the similarity of the respective fragment of E gene for West Siberian and Sofyin strains was no more than 81%. No significant changes in …

Red to Green: A Lipid Biomarker Record of Tonian-Ediacaran Algae in Siberia.

Multiple lines of evidence point to a major diversification of Eukarya in the late Tonian period, ca. 800-720 Ma ago. Regular steranes, lipid biomarkers primarily sourced from eukaryotes, are first unambiguously reported from multiple sites. Here, we present lipid biomarker stratigraphic records from two drill-cores from the Lena-Anabar Basin in northern Siberia, in addition to new biomarker data from the Walcott Member of the Chuar Group, USA. The Siberian drill-cores span the late Tonian (ca. 800-750 Ma) and late Ediacaran-early Cambrian periods (ca. 565-539 Ma), with Cryogenian strata absen…

Bithyniid snails as hosts of Opisthorchiidae and Notocotylidae in the south of Western Siberia, Russia.

Opisthorchiasis and related infections are persistent and substantial public health burdens from eastern Europe to southeastern and northern … ails in the transmission of Opisthorchiidae and Notocotylidae in ecosystems in the south of Western Siberia. We have been studying the process of bithyniid snail dissemination in Western Siberia and examining their infection by trematodes from 1994 until now. A total of 16,213 bithyniid snails in 23 water bodies (in 28 localities) of four major basins sit …

Opisthorchis felineus infection prevalence in Western Siberia: A review of Russian literature.

In this study we reviewed Russian scientific literature (scientific publications, book chapters, monographs) published between 1 January 1979 and 31 August 2015 from two sources: Main database of the Russian Scientific Electronic Library (eLIBRARY, http://elibrary.ru/), and the Scientific Medical Library of Siberian State Medical University (http://medlib.tomsk.ru/). Specifically, the review details the infection prevalence of Opisthorchis felineus (O. felineus) in Western Siberia, Russian Federation. From the primary key words screening, 1591 records were identified from which 32 Russian-lang…

Undertreated HIV and drug-resistant tuberculosis at a referral hospital in Irkutsk, Siberia.

SETTING: A referral hospital for tuberculosis (TB) in Irkutsk, the Russian Federation. OBJECTIVE: To describe disease characteristics, treatment and hospital outcomes of TB-HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). DESIGN: Observational cohort of HIV-infected patients admitted for anti-tuberculosis treatment over 6 months. RESULTS: A total of 98 patients were enrolled with a median CD4 count of 147 cells/mm(3) and viral load of 205 943 copies/ml. Among patients with drug susceptibility testing (DST) results, 29 (64%) were multidrug-resistant (MDR), including 12 without previous anti-tuberculosis

[REGULARITIES OF THE MANIFESTATIONS OF AN EPIDEMIC PROCESS IN THE HYPERENDEMIC OPISTHORCHIASIS FOCUS OF WESTERN SIBERIA].

Studies of long-term opisthorchiasis changes have first established trends in the development of a present-day epidemic process in the hyperendemic area and seasonal morbidity trends and structure and identified contingents at the highest risk for infection. The risk of opisthorchiasis was comprehensively assessed from the varying intensities of epizootic and epidemic processes in the region's areas; the role of natural and social factors was revealed; the parasitic system function patterns that made it possible to elaborate a unified epidemiological surveillance system were established.

Specific clinical and epidemiological features of tick-borne encephalitis in Western Siberia.

In Western Siberia, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) morbidity among residents of all ages and social groups has remained high over many years. The frequency of tick bites is high, and 2.6-5.7% of bitten persons are hospitalized each year because of suspected TBE infection. According to official statistical data, children <14 years account for 20-30% of TBE cases. Adult, working-age people (20-49 years) are at highest risk of infection. TBE may progress in a febrile, meningeal, or focal (paralytic) form, becoming chronic in 1-1.7% of cases. Severe progression and fatal outcomes of the disease hav…

Opisthorchis felineus infection, risks, and morbidity in rural Western Siberia, Russian Federation.

BACKGROUND: The liver fluke, Opisthorchis felineus, is widely distributed throughout Europe and large parts of the Russian Federation. In Western Siberia, information about opisthorchiasis is lacking although infection may lead to severe liver and bile duct diseases. We aimed to assess the current prevalence of O. felineus infection along with associated risk factors and morbidity in rural Western Siberia. METHODS: We conducted a community-based, cross-sectional study in the rural Shegarskiy district, Tomsk Oblast, Russian Federation. All household members (≥ 7 years) present on the survey da…

Modified Cone Reconstruction of the Tricuspid Valve for Ebstein Anomaly as Performed in Siberia.

The cone reconstruction technique, first described by da Silva and modified by Dearani and by others, has become the repair method of choice in patients with Ebstein anomaly of the tricuspid valve. This report details the outcome of the modified cone reconstruction technique in 6 children who underwent surgical correction of Ebstein anomaly at the Tomsk Institute of Cardiology in Siberia. From 2012 through 2015, 4 boys and 2 girls (age range, 11 mo-12 yr) underwent surgery to correct Ebstein anomaly. All had presented with cyanosis, exertional dyspnea, fatigue, or new-onset atrial arrhythmia, …
