Infantile hemangioma is the most common tumor of infancy, affecting approximately 5.0% of Caucasians. We present the unlikely occurrence of four siblings with infantile hemangiomas; there was no family history of the tumor. One child was low birth weight, there was one set of twins, and three infants had multiple lesions. The estimated probability of four consecutive children having this phenotypic expression of infantile hemangioma is 1/4,232,804.

Posterior microphthalmos is a rare congenital bilateral eye disorder, of which the posterior segment is abnormally small. Additional features include high hypermetropia and a tendency to uveal effusion. We report two siblings who present with high hypermetropia and other features of posterior microphthalmos. Fundus examination revealed the typical crowding of the optic disc and retinal folds. We discuss clinical characteristics, pathogenesis and complications of this disorder.

We describe a Japanese brother and sister with Martsolf syndrome. They had short stature, severe mental retardation, cataract, hypogonadism, craniofacial dysmorphism, and bone and joint symptoms including scoliosis, lax finger joints, and talipes valgus. Previously undescribed findings included proximal femoral epiphyseal dysplasia reminiscent of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease in both patients, and Klippel-Feil malformation and osteopathia striata in one patient. Brain MRI showed mild frontal and temporal lobe atrophy, and mild ventricular enlargement. Severe GH deficiency was demonstrated after i

We describe a brother and sister who both had holoprosencephaly, polydactyly, cardiac lesions and a normal karyotype. The parents were first cousins and a diagnosis of pseudotrisomy 13 syndrome is suggested. This report provides further support that the inheritance of pseudotrisomy 13 syndrome is autosomal recessive.

Nasal dermoid cysts are congenital malformations which result from anomalous embryological development. Two cases occurring in siblings are presented. There have been several previous reports that the condition may be familial but in this report the initial suspicion of the milder anomaly in the younger child was raised primarily because of his older brother's history. This further report suggests that the incidence of familial occurrence of this anomaly may be greater than current literature suggests, and the possibility that other family members may be affected should be remembered by clinic…

In a case-control study of cancer of the colon it was found that 96 out of 332 (29%) cases had a positive family history of cancer of the colon (2 cases and more) as compared with 19 out of 473 (4%) controls. 3 colon cancer cases reported that 6 of their respective relatives were also affected with the same cancer. We were able to do a complete follow-up study of one family where 7 out of 12 sibling (P < 0.05) had confirmed pathological diagnoses of cancer of the colon. The mean age at diagnosis among these familial colon cancer cases was 64 years (60 years for females and 73 years for males)

Three sisters with cystic dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts (Caroli's disease) are reported. The index case, a 41-year-old woman with remittent high fever and right upper quadrant abdominal pain, was diagnosed as Caroli's disease with hepatic lithiasis and cholangitis based on findings of ultrasonography, computed tomography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography. Her two older sisters were also examined and found to have the same disease without clinical symptoms. Their symptoms, locations of the dilated ducts and complications all varied. The hereditary mode of Caroli's disease in

We report two illustrative cases of geographic tongue which occurred in 6- and 4-year-old sisters whose father had fissured tongue. The elder sister had mild atopic dermatitis and nail changes, but there was no family history suggestive of psoriasis. Histologically, the geographic tongue in the elder sister showed the same features as the oral lesions in pustular psoriasis. From a review of the literature we suggest that geographic tongue may be classified into two types, one that commonly occurs in atopics and another that develops as an oral manifestation of pustular psoriasis, although both

In this paper we report two cases of extended intestinal aganglionosis in siblings, a condition that could be considered a severe variety of Hirschsprung's disease.

In September 1982 two siblings were admitted to hospital within a few days of each other, with almost identical symptoms of meningococcemia. One of them had been discharged from hospital four days previously, fully treated to meningococcal meningitis. Two systemic meningococcal isolates and nasopharyngeal meningococci from patient No 1 were B:15:P1. 16 strains as well as one nasopharyngeal isolate from patient No 2. One nasopharyngeal isolate from the father was a non-encapsulated 15:P1. 16 strain. The two systemic isolates were clearly different with respect to the class 5 outer membrane prot…

A Yugoslav family with one female and three male children with Robert's syndrome (RS) is described. To our knowledge, there is no other family with four siblings presenting this genopathy. Most of the symptoms of the fourth sibling were identical to those found in the SC syndrome, suggesting the same genetic origin. The same chromosomal changes which were discovered in the third sibling were also found in the fourth sibling. These chromosomal abnormalities could prove useful for antenatal diagnosis.
