Eleven boys with Morris syndrome underwent feminizing genitoplasty utilizing a segment of the sigmoid colon for neovaginal reconstruction. Bilateral orchiectomy was performed for cosmetic reasons and to prevent neoplasms. Patient follow-up ranging from 6 months to 13 years have demonstrated good results were obtained. No intra- or postoperative complications were observed. Patient psycho-social-sexual identification and satisfaction were achieved.

Ultrasound is useful in the assessment of patients with possible appendicitis. A diagnosis of appendicitis can be made in patients with persistent right lower quadrant pain when a non-compressible appendix greater than 6 mm in diameter is shown. When a normal appendix is affected by an adjacent lesion, reactive inflammation can cause secondary enlargement of the appendix. This article reviews ultrasound findings in conditions which can clinically mimic acute appendicitis. Examples of Crohn's disease, tuboovarian abscess, typhilitis, sigmoid diverticulitis, perforated sigmoid neoplasm, perforat

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed at investigating the relationship between diverticula and in vivo colonic features such as total colon length (TCL), using CTC. We also evaluated polyps, neoplastic lesions and the correlation among them.
METHODS: This retrospective study considered a series of patients who underwent CTC in our Hospital from 2010 to 2018. We evaluated TCL, the length of each colon segments and sigmoid colon diameter using dedicated software. We verified the presence of diverticula, polyps and neoplasm and measured the number of diverticula using a five-point class scale, ev

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon, usually benign neoplasm; however, a malignant potential has been described. Malignant GCT is an extremely rare neoplasm showing rapid growth and invasion into adjacent muscles, lymph nodes, or vessels, or even distant metastasis. We recently experienced a case of a histologically benign or atypical but clinically malignant GCT, with invasion of the lymph nodes and vessels in the sigmoid colon, diagnosed by segmental colon resection with lymph node dissection. We also performed a review of relevant medical literature.

Deleterious germline variants in the BRCA1-associated ring domain (BARD1) gene moderately elevate breast cancer risk; however, their potential association with other neoplasms remains unclear. Here, we present the case of a 43-year-old female patient diagnosed with sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma whose maternal family members met the Amsterdam Criteria II for Lynch syndrome. Comprehensive multigene panel testing revealed a heterozygous BARD1 exon 3 deletion.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sigmoidoscopy is performed more frequently than colonoscopy, especially for screening purposes and searching for colorectal neoplasm. The necessity of colonoscopy in patients with an adenoma of<or=5 mm found on sigmoidoscopy is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the size of rectosigmoid adenomas is associated with the risk of neoplasm in the proximal colon and to determine whether there is indication for total colonoscopy.
METHODS: Patients found to have rectosigmoid adenomatous polyps on colonoscopy were included in the study. These adenomas were

An otherwise healthy 59-year-old man presented to the emergency department with 2 weeks of narrowed stools, 5 days of obstipation, and 1 day of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Computed tomography revealed an obstructing sigmoid mass without evidence of metastatic disease, and the CEA was 1.2 ng/mL. Flexible sigmoidoscopy confirmed a circumferentially obstructing distal sigmoid neoplasm. Endoscopic stent placement was immediately followed by a firm distended abdomen. An upright radiograph obtained following the procedure demonstrated free intraperitoneal air. An emergent Hartmann procedur

Colitis cystica profunda is a rare intestinal lesion. Because of its clinical expression (rectorrhagia, mucorrhea and abdominal pain) and the way it appears to current imaging techniques this disease presents features which can be associated with colon neoplasm. Its diagnosis has to be confirmed histologically, and its etiology remains unclear. The following is a case report of colitis cystica profunda recurring 20 years after a first episode in a white woman, who had had an anterior resection of the sigmoid colon and upper rectum to deal with a colitis cystica profunda-induced stenosis of the

Seventy-two patients with colon cancer were treated by primary subtotal colectomy, including 23 patients with acute and subacute left colon obstruction. There were two operative deaths and no cases of disabling diarrhea. One death occurred in the group with colon obstruction. Other indications for subtotal colectomy included multiple polyps associated with the primary tumor (32), synchronous carcinomas (15), a previous transverse colostomy for obstruction (8), associated severe sigmoid diverticular disease (2), age less than 50 years with a positive family history (3), adherence of the sigmoid

A 53‒year‒old female was referred to our hospital for abdominal pain. A cystic tumor evolving since 12 years, which was suspected of being a lymphocyst, was detected in her left lower abdomen. Computed tomography(CT)revealed the cystic tumor with enhanced 80 mm enlarged regions. Regarding the laboratory data, inflammatory parameters and tumor markers such as CA19‒9, CEA, and CA125 were elevated. Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma was highly suspected and a surgery was performed. Laparotomy showed that the tumor was located in the sigmoid mesocolon and there were multiple peritoneal disseminations. Th

Endometriosis is characterized by extra-uterine endometrial gland and stroma implantation. Intestinal endometriosis is believed to affect about one-third of patients with endometriosis4; 72-95% of patients experience recto-sigmoid involvement.2,3 Occasionally, endometriotic lesions precipitate mass effect or infiltrate the bowel wall, mimicking a neoplasm. In the index case, we evaluated a G0P0 41-year-old perimenopausal female with near obstructing sigmoid endometrioma, clinically presented, investigated, and managed in the lines of sigmoid colon carcinoma. Computed Tomography revealed marked

Colitis cystica profunda (CCP) is a rare, uncommon and nonneoplastic condition that can occur anywhere in gastrointestinal tract, but its main occurrence is in the rectum and sigmoid colon. It is characterized by the presence of mucin filled cysts, lined by benign epithelium, beneath the muscularis mucosae, usually confined to the submucosa, and it can clinically and radiologically mimic a neoplasm. Here we report a rare case of CCP in a patient with a 2-months history of abdominal pain and severe anemia, associated with diverticulosis. The knowledge of this entity and its differential diagnos

INTRODUCTION: Incisional hernia after appendectomy is rare, affecting 0.4% to 0.9% of cases. The small bowel and omentum are commonly herniated through the abdominal wall defect, but incisional hernia of the sigmoid colon is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old man presented with a right lower quadrant abdominal wall mass on the previous McBurney incision site. He had a history of appendectomy for appendicitis 40 years ago. Computed tomography (CT) showed the sigmoid colon herniated thorough the abdominal wall defect. During the operation, a feces-impacted sigmoid colon was found

An 86 year old male with a four-day history of nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms was found on colonoscopy to have evidence of sigmoid colon obstruction and possible perforation. Emergent operative exploration revealed diffuse peritonitis, sigmoid perforation, adjacent dense adhesions, and a foreign body protruding through the perforated area. Pathologic examination showed the foreign body to be a sliver of bone consistent with chicken bone and the sigmoid subacute perforation to be associated distally with a circumferential ulcerated obstructing mass, microscopically seen to be transmurall

We describe a case of intra-abdominal fibromatosis, which occurred in a 44-year-old woman who had a previous history of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the sigmoid mesocolon, which was treated with imatinib and resection. A mass was detected at the site of ileocolic anastomosis of the previous small bowel resection and sigmoid colectomy, nearly 3 years later. Clinically, this was suspected to represent recurrent GIST and was excised, but histology and mutational analysis showed desmoid-type fibromatosis with a mutation in codon 41 of exon 3 of the CTNNB1 (β-catenin) gene. The occurren

While colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly encountered gastrointestinal malignancies, primary lymphoma is an uncommon neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. The duodenum is not a common location for the recurrence of colon cancer or of primary gastrointestinal lymphoma. Studies regarding mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) as a secondary synchronous or metachronous malignancy are limited. Here we report a patient who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy for his advanced sigmoid adenocarcinoma and developed MCL in the duodenal bulb 20 months later. Suspected lesions should be biopsied and exa

In recent years, several reports on the experimental and clinical applications of the Gianturco stent (self-expanding stainless steel stent) have been published. However, to our knowledge, the use of stents in rectosigmoid strictures has not been reported. We used self-expanding stainless steel stents to dilate rectosigmoid strictures caused by nonresectable recurrent neoplasm. Insertion and dilation (sigmoid colon and rectum) in two patients were successful. Accordingly, these patients were able to maintain bowel activity and avoid palliative loop colostomy. We believe that this procedure is
