Effect of Harvest Time and Packing Density on the Quality and Clostridium in Maize Silage.

This study investigated whole-plant maize at three harvest stages: one-third milk line (ML, 1/3 ML), two-thirds ML (2/3 ML), and the mature stage. Two packing densities were applied: 350 kg/m3 (low-density group) and 700 kg/m3 (high-density group). Results showed that starch content increased significantly as the maize matured. The 2/3 ML stage exhibited a 34.0% increase in starch content compared to the 1/3 ML stage (27.96 g/kg dry matter: DM vs. 20.87 g/kg DM, p < 0.01), while the mature stage showed a 13.4% increase compared to the 2/3 ML stage (31.70 g/kg DM vs. 27.96 g/kg DM, p < 0.01). The effects of different silage types on rumen bacteria and metabolites in Tibetan sheep.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between two different types of silage (saline; SQ and non-saline; NSQ) and rumen metabolism in Tibetan sheep. RESULTS: It was found that sheep in the saline silage (SQ group) exhibited superior apparent quality (e.g., crude protein, crude fat, DM, crude polysaccharide, polyphenols, and flavonoid), secondary metabolite profiles (e.g., Proline, Leucine, Alanine, Pyruvate), and fermentation microbial populations (e.g., Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Lactobacillus) compared to the non-saline (NSQ) silage group. However, the hi

Intake and chewing behavior of steers consuming switchgrass preserved as hay or silage.

Effect of preservation method on intake and chewing behavior was examined using a first, late vegetative harvest (mid-June) of Kanlow switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.). For silage (S), forage was harvested with a commercial field chopper (1.5 to 4 cm average chop length) and ensiled directly in silos 1.2 m in diameter and 3.6 m in height. For hay (H), forage was harvested with a flail-chopper (7 to 15 cm average chop length) and cured as hay in a drier at 77 degrees C. Diets of H and S were fed to six Hereford steers (338+/-5 kg) in a single crossover experiment. Chewing behavior was monitored

Listeriosis in fattening pigs caused by poor quality silage - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Listeria (L.) monocytogenes as the causative agent of listeriosis in humans and different animal species, has its reservoir in the environment. It can be found in the gut and faeces of healthy pigs, but under certain circumstances it may cause clinical disease. Fatteners are usually not known to get affected by Listeria-associated septicaemia and enteritis. This case report shows, that L. monocytogenes should be part of the list of differential diagnoses, when fattening pigs suffer from haemorrhagic diarrhoea and septicaemia. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report of an episode of fat

Type C bovine botulism outbreak due to carcass contaminated non-acidified silage.

The first reported bovine botulism outbreak in Finland is described. Nine out of 90 cattle on a dairy farm died after being fed non-acidified silage contaminated by animal carcasses. Type C botulinum neurotoxin gene was detected in one heifer by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the neurotoxin was detected by the mouse bioassay. Clostridium botulinum type C was isolated from liver samples. The isolated strain was identified with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis as group III C. botulinum. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a type C bovine botulism outbreak has

A note on the emission of nitrogen oxides from silage in opened bunker silos.

The evolution of NOx from grass and maize silages was measured using chemiluminescence in samples kept in airtight containers, in the silos and in a 750 kg mass removed to a mixer waggon. Measurements were made on the grass and maize silos in two consecutive years. The results show that there is continuous evolution of NOx after silos have been opened and that high concentrations persist in the mass which are rapidly released on agitation at the feed-out. The maximum recorded concentrations of NO and NO2 were 1985 and 152 ppbv respectively. These values are orders of magnitude greater than for

Herd Health Troubles Potentially Related to Aluminium Grass Silage Content in Dairy Cows.

In ruminants, the main documented clinical manifestation of aluminium (Al) intoxication is similar to grass tetany. In a 50 dairy cow Belgian herd, the farmer reported excessive uterine bleeding at calving and decreased milk production. Dairy cows received a mixed ration (MR) with high Al concentration (453 ppm/kg of dry matter (DM)). Various analyses were sampled from 10 sick cows and compared with 10 healthy cows (from another herd). Sick cows presented anaemia and marginal hypozincaemia and 6/10 showed subclinical ketosis. Their urine analysis revealed hypomagnesaemia and a high Al/creatini

Microbiological Quality of Maize Silage in Relation to Agricultural Practices: A Four-Year Study.

Silage is a fundamental component of cattle feed, and its microbiological quality is critical for animal health and human safety. Improper ensiling conditions, such as oxygen exposure or inadequate acidification, can promote the growth of pathogens like Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium botulinum, and Bacillus cereus. This study aimed to evaluate the microbial status of maize silages and identify pre-ensiling factors influencing its hygienic safety. Over a four-year period, 406 silage samples were collected from cattle farms across Poland. The research evaluated general hygiene indicators an

Replacing maize partially or totally with sorghum alters mycotoxin profile in their silages in microsilos.

Heat- and drought-tolerant sorghum is an attractive alternative to maize, yet its silage mycotoxin trade-offs remain unclear. We compared maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench; cultivars Goliath and Sucrosorgo 506) and 1:1 maize-sorghum silages after 60 d ensiling (microsilo scale), with or without a commercial multi-strain lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculant. All silages fermented well (pH 4.06 - 4.21; lactic acid 18.1 - 27.9 g/kg dry matter). Maize silage showed the highest Fusarium toxins-deoxynivalenol (DON) 499 - 516 and nivalenol (NIV) 173 - 216 μg/kg dry matter. In

[Effect of mixed protein silage in feed on the digestive tract and metabolism parameters in swine].

With a view to studying the effect of acid addition, weaned piglets and fattening pigs were fed graduated amounts of protein mixed silage (pH-value 3.15 by adding 20 g H2SO4/kg) in rations of equal energy and protein levels. On average, the fattening pigs were taking in 0.26 g H2SO4/kg, whilst the amounts for piglets were 0.60 and 0.72 g H2SO4/kg. Higher acid intakes had a negative effect of energy expenditure, weight gains and feed intake. The experimental animals had significantly longer small intestines, whilst the intestine's wall was found thinner and the amount of digesta reduced and wit
