Information about severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in HIV-infected individuals is scarce. In this prospective study, we included HIV (human immunodefeciency virus)-infected individuals (people living with HIV [PLWHIV]) with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and compared them with PLWHIV negative for SARS-CoV-2. We compared 55 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection with 69 asymptomatic PLWHIV negative for SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and/or serology. There was no significant difference between SARS-CoV-2 positive or negative patients for a

PURPOSE: Homeless persons have a high risk for tuberculosis. The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection and the risk for a progression to active tuberculosis is higher in the homeless than in the general population. The objective was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of tuberculosis/latent tuberculosis infection in a homeless population in Germany.
METHODS: Homeless individuals (n = 150) were enrolled in a cross-sectional study at three shelters in Münster, Germany (October 2017-July 2018). All participants were screened using an ELISPOT interferon-γ release assay (IGRA). Those p

Faking in a psychological test is often observed whenever an examinee may gain an advantage from it. Although techniques are available to identify a faker, they cannot identify the specific questions distorted by faking. This work evaluates the effectiveness of term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF)-an information retrieval mathematical tool used in search engines and language representations-in identifying single-item faked responses. We validated the technique on three datasets containing responses to the 10-item Big Five questionnaire (total of 694 participants, respectively 221

BACKGROUND: We assessed cumulative antiretroviral exposure-using tenofovir diphosphate (TFV-DP) in dried blood spots (DBS)-in persons with HIV (PWH) receiving tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) as single-tablet regimens (STR) or multiple-tablet regimens (MTR).
METHODS: Blood for DBS was prospectively collected in PWH on TDF during 1144 person visits (n = 523). Linear mixed-effects models, adjusted for baseline characteristics, were used to compare TFV-DP in STR versus MTR. Models adjusted for ART regimen using either anchor drug class, pharmacokinetic boost

We examined the influence of single applications of placebo, caffeine (7 mg/kg), and crotylbarbital (2 mg/kg) on reaction and attention performance in 15 volunteers. A newly developed reaction-time apparatus permits the reaction time to be split for differentiation between initiation time and movement time. Moreover, simple and complex attention performance can be quantified. The volunteers were selected as to the dimensions of "introversion/extraversion" and "emotional lability/stability" by means of the Freiburg Personality Inventory. Labile volunteers responded to placebo faster than stable

Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized clinical oncology; however, the inherent complexity and heterogeneity of cancer present substantial challenges to achieving broad therapeutic efficacy. Tumor heterogeneity manifests not only among different patients but also within individual tumors, further complicating personalized treatment approaches. Single-cell sequencing technologies encompassing genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and spatial omics have significantly enhanced our ability to dissect tumor heterogeneity at single-cell resolution with multi-layered depth. These appro

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment employs several FDA-approved BCR::ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with distinct efficacy and side effects influenced by patient-specific factors. This study introduces a microfluidic cell culture array for the comparative analysis of six BCR::ABL1 TKIs, namely imatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib, ponatinib, dasatinib, and asciminib, using CML-related cell lines. The device provides a continuous, chemostat-like microfluidic environment that enables quantitative drug sensitivity scoring. The microchambers for cell culture notably offer advantages for si

The emergence of technologies that can support high-throughput profiling of single cell transcriptomes offers to revolutionize the study of brain tissue from persons with and without Alzheimer's disease (AD). Integration of these data with additional complementary multiomics data such as genetics, proteomics and clinical data provides powerful opportunities to link observed cell subpopulations and molecular network features within a broader disease-relevant context. We report here single nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) profiles generated from superior frontal gyrus cortical tissue samples f

BACKGROUND: The emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic during the fall of 2019 and into the spring of 2020 has led to an increased demand of disposable N95 respirators and other types of personal protective equipment (PPE) as a way to prevent virus spread and help ensure the safety of healthcare workers. The sudden demand led to rapid modification, development, and dissemination of 3D printed PPE. The goal of this study was to determine the inherent sterility and re-sterilizing ability of 3D printed PPE in order to provide sterile equipment to th

INTRODUCTION: Aminoglycoside (AG) antibiotics, such as tobramycin, are known to be ototoxic but important clinically due to their bactericidal efficacy. Persons with cystic fibrosis (CF) are at risk for AG-induced ototoxicity due to the repeated use of intravenous (IV) tobramycin for the treatment of pulmonary exacerbations. While it is well-established that ototoxic hearing loss is highly prevalent in this clinical population, the progression of hearing loss over time remains unclear. Cumulative IV-AG dosing has been associated with a higher risk of ototoxic hearing loss, yet some individuals

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) neurofeedback training of amygdala hemodynamic activity directly targets a neurobiological mechanism, which contributes to emotion regulation problems in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it remains unknown which outcome measures can assess changes in emotion regulation and affective instability, associated with amygdala downregulation in a clinical trial. The current study directly addresses this question. Twenty-four female patients with a DSM-IV BPD diagnosis underwent four runs of amygdala neurofeedback. Before and after
