Ganglioneuromas are rare, benign neoplasms derived from sympathetic neural crest progenitor cells. In the pediatric population, ganglioneuromas usually develop in the mediastinum or retroperitoneum. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy who presented with a painless enlarging neck mass, which was found to be a parapharyngeal space ganglioneuroma that extended to the skull base. We summarize the current principles regarding the diagnostic workup and treatment of these neoplasms, and we briefly review the literature.

Calvarial cavernous hemangiomas (CHs) comprise 0.2% of benign neoplasms of the skull and frequently occur in the second and fourth decades. Their occurrence in infancy is extremely rare and they can initially be misdiagnosed as cephal hematoma or caput succadeneum that can occur due to the birth trauma, but trauma is not a predisposing factor. CT scan is more helpful than other neuro-imaging studies and untreated CHs of the skull may show progression. Only two cases of congenital primary CH of the skull without intracranial invasion have been reported in the literature. Herewith we reported a

Skull base reconstruction has been a widely debated issue. Both autologous and heterologous materials have been proposed, however the formers are usually preferred due to their optimal healing outcomes and integration. Nevertheless they are still associated with donor-site functional and aesthetic morbidity. The aim of this study is to report a preliminary experience of different sites defects skull base repair with Cadaver homologous banked fascia lata graft. Patients who underwent reconstruction of skull base defects with Cadaver homologous banked fascia lata between January 2020 until July

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Endoscopic endonasal approach is the procedure of choice for the resection of ventral skull base neoplasms, with defect closure requiring multilayer reconstruction. This study evaluates the temporal MR imaging evolution of nasoseptal flaps and free grafts used in endoscopic skull base reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine follow-up brain MRIs of 22 patients who had endoscopic skull base reconstruction using 26 nasoseptal flaps combined with 8 collagen-matrix dural grafts, 10 fascia lata grafts, and 10 intracranial fat grafts were retrospectively reviewed. T

Ectopic pituitary adenomas are very rare neoplasms. They are usually located in the sphenoid sinus or nasopharynx. Ectopic tumors derive from a residual pituitary fragment in the craniopharyngeal duct. They are similar in morphology, immunohistochemistry and hormonal activity to the typical pituitary adenoma. One third ectopic pituitary tumors reported in the literature are endocrine inactive, while the remaining ones indicate a hormonal activity and usually secrete ACTH, causing the Cushing disease. About 50% of pituitary adenomas are located at the skull base and present as aggressive neopla

A 56-year-old woman presented with a cystic skull lesion in the right temporal bone detected after resection of breast cancer. She underwent resection of the skull tumor for pathological diagnosis and treatment. The tumor was covered with ciliated epithelium and there were no malignant findings. The pathological diagnosis was ciliated epithelial inclusion cyst. Intradiploic inclusion cysts of the skull presenting as a calvarial defect include epidermoid cysts and dermoid cysts, which are clinically difficult to differentiate. Ciliated epithelium lining an intradiploic inclusion cyst is very ra

The expanded endonasal approach provides access to the entire ventral skull base for resection of neoplasms involving the skull base and brain. The creation of large defects of the bone and dura endoscopically presents unique reconstructive challenges. A layered reconstruction of the dura with inlay and onlay fascial grafts covered with fat grafts is an effective technique for repair. An intranasal balloon catheter is used to provide counterpressure in the early phase of healing and a lumbar spinal drain is a useful adjunct in patients at increased risk of a cerebrospinal fluid leak. Vasculari

Prognosis was once considered hopeless for many patients with malignant neoplasms of the anterior skull base. Craniofacial resection of these lesions has now been found curative for many patients. However, massive resections of the anterior skull base pose many potentially life-threatening complications. Cerebrospinal fluid fistula with meningitis is especially troublesome when previous radiation therapy compromises wound healing. In such circumstances local tissue flaps and skin grafting may not provide reliable separation of the brain from the nose. The pectoralis major myocutaneous flap was

OBJECTIVE: The use of expanded endonasal surgery (EES) in the treatment of skull base neoplasms has increased significantly in recent years. Since 2006, the nasoseptal flap (NSF) has become the workhorse for the closure of skull base defects involving the anterior and central skull base. We hypothesized that defect site impacts the rate of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak following EES.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING/SUBJECTS/METHODS: Patients who underwent skull base defect repair using a NSF at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) minimally invasive skull b

The formation of an epidural hematoma from an eosinophilic granuloma of the skull is an exceptional occurrence. A 9-year-old boy presented with severe headache, somnolence and vomiting following a minor head injury. Cranial computerized tomography scan showed a seemingly depressed skull fracture together with an epidural hematoma in evolution. A neoplasm and an epidural hematoma were removed at operation. Histopathological study of the excised mass confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic granuloma.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic fungus with marked neurotropism, classically affecting immunocompromised patients, even though occasionally reported in immunocompetent hosts. Skull involvement is exceptionally rare and may radiologically mimic malignant tumors, causing diagnostic delays.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 34-year-old immunocompetent male presented with a painless, progressive left parieto-occipital scalp swelling over 3 weeks. Imaging revealed a well-defined, dumbbell-shaped cystic mass beneath the scalp, causing lytic skull erosion and limited intracranial extension

Primary intraosseous cavernous hemangioma (PICH) is a rare benign vascular tumor. This neoplasm is common in the spine and less common in skull. Toynbee J. first described this tumor in 1845. PICH of the cranium does not always have typical X-ray features and should be always differentiated with other more common skull lesions. Surgical resection is preferable since total resection is followed by favorable prognosis. We present a 65-year-old patient with asymptomatic tumor of the right parietal bone. CT revealed osteolytic lesion that required total resection and skull repair. Histopathologica

Endoscopic endonasal approaches have widely accepted techniques for managing benign and malignant processes along the entire ventral skull base with similar or better results compared with open procedures, but with lower rates of complication. Managing pathology affecting the skull base can be challenging because of complex anatomy and the proximity of critical neurovascular structures. Postoperative imaging can be challenging, because of surgical alterations of normal anatomy and the now common use of complex reconstruction techniques. Understanding the normal imaging appearance of skull base

PURPOSE: Defects resulting from open resection of anterior skull base neoplasms are difficult to reconstruct. Our objective was to review the literature and describe an evidence-based algorithm that can guide surgeons reconstructing anterior skull base defects.
METHODS: A research librarian designed database search strategies. Two investigators independently reviewed the resulting abstracts and full text articles. Studies on reconstruction after open anterior skull base resection were included. Studies of lateral and posterior skull base reconstruction, endoscopic endonasal surgery, traumatic

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of skull base masses is diverse and includes benign and malignant neoplasms, vascular anomalies, congenital lesions, as well as infectious and inflammatory processes. Metastatic masses of the skull base are a rare manifestation of systemic malignancies. Breast cancer is the most common cause of skull base metastases. Villaret syndrome refers to cranial nerves IX, X, XI, and XII and sympathetic chain neuropathies. It is a clinical subtype of jugular foramen syndromes.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 62-year-old woman with a history of breast carcinoma presented wi
