The objective of the present study was to propose cutoff points for the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS) through sensitivity and specificity analyses in order to identify excessive daytime sleepiness, considering parameters such as duration and quality of sleep, health perception, stress control and depressive moods (feelings of sadness) in adolescents. A total of 1,132 adolescents, aged 14-19 years old, of both sexes, from the public high school of São José - SC, answered the questionnaire with information on age, daytime sleepiness, sleep duration, health perception, stress manageme…

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is the most common symptom of sleep-disorders. Although high levels of EDS have been reported among firefighters, there is a limited understanding on EDS in firefighters. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in full-time firefighters (n = 275). The survey included the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to assess EDS, as well as other questions related to job characteristics, health history, and demographics. Firefighters reported inadequate sleep hours, extremely short sleep latencies, and high EDS higher than the general population. A majority of firefighters indica…

Daytime sleepiness is reported by 10-15 % within the general population of industrialised countries. According to federal statistics in Switzerland, only ~1.5 % of motor vehicle crashes are caused by excessive daytime sleepiness, which is in sharp contrast to the scientific literature, indicating a figure of 10 to 30 %. This is most likely related to the difficulty to detect the underlying sleepiness by police officers and their low awareness of this cause in case of car accidents. As a consequence of this massively reduced figure, the real problem is underestimated and countermeasures as well…

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) represents the 1 chronic neuromuscular disease with the most prominent sleep disorders, including excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), sleep apneas, periodic leg movements during sleep, and rapid eye movement sleep dysregulation. The large majority of DM1 patients complain about EDS, which may have a deleterious impact on work, domestic responsibilities, social life, and quality of life. Here, we review the extant literature and report that studies are largely supportive of the view that DM1-related EDS is primarily caused by a central dysfunction of sleep regula…

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Sleepiness in medical residents has crucial implications for the safety of both patients and residents. Measures to improve this have primarily included an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-mandated reduction in work hours in residency programs. The impact of these work-hour limitations has not been consistent. The purpose of this study was to provide an objective assessment of daytime sleepiness in medical residents working in the medical ICU. Sleep times for 2 days/nights prior to on call and on the day/night of being on call were assessed by actigr…

Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed psychoactive substances and it has profound effects on sleep and wake function. Laboratory studies have documented its sleep-disruptive effects. It clearly enhances alertness and performance in studies with explicit sleep deprivation, restriction, or circadian sleep schedule reversals. But, under conditions of habitual sleep the evidence indicates that caffeine, rather then enhancing performance, is merely restoring performance degraded by sleepiness. The sleepiness and degraded function may be due to basal sleep insufficiency, circadian sleep schedu…

OBJECTIVE: Validating the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS-VC) for use in Colombia .
METHODS: Individuals were included who consulted sleep centres in Bogotá, Pereira and Cali ( Colombia ). Study design consisted of eight phases: a pilot study for assessing the Spanish version of the scale, translation and retro-translation of the original ESS, a pilot test for evaluating understanding (n=20), validating appearance (experts, n=18), internal consistency (n=120), validating concurrent and discriminating criteria (n=150) with parallel polysomnography, reproducibility (n=15) and sensitivity to chang…

This brief paper reviews the available published literature on shiftwork and safety that allows the relative risk of "accidents" or injuries … th predictions derived from considerations of the circadian variations in sleep propensity or rated sleepiness, and consider factors relating to sleep that may underlie the observed trends in risk. Finally, the practical implications of the trends in risk for the design of safer shift systems are discussed.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) has recognized detrimental consequences such as road traffic accidents, impaired psychological functioning and reduced work performance. EDS can result from multiple causes such as sleep deprivation, sleep fragmentation, neurological, psychiatric and circadian rhythm disorders. Treating the underlying cause of EDS remains the mainstay of therapy but in those who continue to be excessively sleepy, further treatment may be warranted. Traditionally, the amphetamine derivatives, methylphenidate and pemoline (collectively sympathomimetic) psychostimulants were the…

Excessive daytime sleepiness and abnormal sleep-wake patterns are becoming increasingly pervasive in modern society. The major causes of excessive daytime sleepiness include pathologic abnormalities of the central nervous system, such as narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia; deficiencies in quality or quantity of sleep, such as those caused by sleep apnea and poor sleep hygiene; disturbances to the body's natural circadian rhythm, such as those caused by shift work or jet lag; and drugs, which can increase sleepiness either therapeutically or as a side effect. Determining the cause of daytime…

A self-report postal questionnaire was sent to 5000 (3612 male) drivers randomly selected from the policy holders of an insurance company which insures only motorists who have achieved a maximum 'no-claims bonus'. The questionnaire sought demographic and physical details (sex, age, height, weight and collar size), driving history (number of years, average mileage), accident history (number, number of 'near misses'), frequency of events due to sleepiness (accidents, pulling off the road, falling asleep at the wheel), frequency and severity of snoring and sleep pattern and severity of EDS. Of th…

Excessive day-time sleepiness (EDS) is in more than 80% of the subjects caused by the sleep apnoe syndrome (SAS), narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. SAS is treated by continuous positive airway pressure or by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. Narcolepsy is manifested by imperative sleepiness which may be preceded by a period of non-imperative EDS. In the treatment of narcolepsy "preventive" day-time naps and administration of stimulants are used. EDS cannot be completely eliminated in some narcoleptics. EDS in idiopathic hypersomnia can be usually influenced only by stimulants. The author gives a…
