INTRODUCTION: Operative video supports performance review and education, but consistent surgeon point-of-view (POV) capture in plastic and reconstructive surgery is challenging. We assessed the perceived educational effectiveness of a smart-glasses POV system and documentation/implementation considerations, including medicolegal use.
METHODS: De-identified operative segments were recorded using second-generation Meta AI Glasses. Curated videos/stills were shown to consultants, trainees, and medical students, who completed an anonymous questionnaire with optional free-text.
RESULTS: Thirty-fi

Virtual Reality (VR) has had significant advances in rehabilitation, due to the gamification of cognitive activities that facilitate treatment. On the other hand, Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) produces outstanding results due to the interactive features with the user. This work introduces a VR application for memory rehabilitation by walking through a maze and using the Oculus Go head-mounted display (HMD) technology. The mechanics of the game require memorizing geometric shapes while the player progresses in two modes, autonomous or manual, with two levels of difficulty depending on the num

OBJECTIVES: Efficient gait training requires optimization of both the training intensity and training quantity; however, objective real-time feedback during gait training remains insufficient in clinical rehabilitation settings. To address this limitation, we developed a therapist-worn gait training support system based on the use of smart glasses. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effects of this system on gait training parameters.
METHODS: This study included 12 patients with post-stroke hemiplegia. Gait training was performed for 20 min on separate…

Avoiding obstacles while navigating is a challenge for people with low vision, who have impaired yet functional vision, which impacts their mobility, safety, and independence. This study investigates the impact of using Augmented Reality (AR) to enhance the visibility of obstacles for people with low vision. Twenty-five participants (14 with low vision and 11 typically sighted) wore smart glasses and completed a real-world obstacle course under two conditions: with obstacles enhanced using 3D AR markings and without any enhancement (i.e., passthrough only - control condition). Our results reve…

Head-up displays (HUDs) have the potential to change work in operation environments by providing hands-free information to wearers. However, these benefits may be accompanied by trade-offs, primarily by increasing cognitive load due to dividing attention. Previous studies have attempted to understand the trade-offs of HUD usage; however, all of which were focused on land-based tasks. A gap in understanding exists when examining HUD use in aquatic environments as immersion introduces unique environmental and physiological factors that could affect multitasking. In this study, we investigated mu

Room-scale 3D position tracking enables users to explore a virtual environment by physically walking, which improves comfort and the level of immersion. However, when users walk with their eyesight blocked by a head-mounted display, they may unexpectedly lose their balance and fall if they bump into real-world obstacles or unintentionally shift their center of mass outside the margin of stability. This paper evaluates balance recovery methods and intervention timing during the use of VR with the assumption that the onset of a fall is given. Our experiment followed the tether-release protocol d

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) offers significant benefits, including short-term recovery and few complications. However, surgeons face challenges, particularly with two-dimensional (2D) visualization systems. Recent advancements in three-dimensional (3D) technologies can enhance depth perception and improve the training process. This study compares three 3D visualization systems in laparoscopic peg transfer training: (1) head-mounted displays, (2) passive 3D glasses, and (3) active 3D glasses.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 24 participants performing a

PURPOSE: Globally, 153 million people are visually impaired from uncorrected refractive error. The aim of this research was to verify a method whereby autorefractors could be used by non-specialist health-workers to prescribe spectacles, which used a small stock of preformed lenses that fit frames with standardised apertures. These spectacles were named S-Glasses (Smart Glasses).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective, single-cohort exploratory study enrolled 53 patients with 94 eligible eyes having uncorrected vision of 6/18 or worse. Eyes with best-corrected vision worse than 6/12 were excl…

The increasing demand for smart bone substitutes has boosted the implementation of biomaterials possibly endowed with both pro-osteogenic and pro-angiogenic capabilities, among which bioactive glasses hold great potential. Hence, two Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based composites were loaded at 10 wt.%, with either pristine (SBA3) or copper-doped (SBA3_Cu) silica-based bioactive glasses, through a solvent casting method with chloroform. Neat PCL was used as a control. Samples produced by 3D printing underwent SEM and EDX analyses, and the following were measured: tensile strength and hardness, su

INTRODUCTION: Subjective safety is a key determinant of cycling behavior and traffic risk perception, yet it is rarely assessed systematically in infrastructure evaluation. Because perceived safety does not necessarily correspond to objective indicators such as crash statistics or design standards, reliable methods are needed to capture experiential safety dimensions relevant to research and practice. Immersive technologies such as head-mounted displays (HMDs) may provide a controlled, scalable, effort- and resource-efficient addition or even alternative to rarely conducted on-site assessments

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) are treatment modalities that are minimally invasive and used for the prevention and control of dental caries. The amalgamation of these two techniques has led to the development of silver modified atraumatic restorative treatment (SMART). In this approach the carious lesion is restored with glass-ionomer cement (GIC) after SDF application. SMART effectively arrests caries without removing additional tooth structure, making it a promising option for caries management in children who lack cooperative ability. This article r

Nausea and other debilitating symptoms associated with cybersickness continue to pose a significant challenge when using extended reality (xR) head-mounted displays (HMD). This study investigated if augmented reality (AR) HMD at-sea use produced cybersickness. Participants performed an observation task in AR HMD and reported their sickness at six, 5-min intervals. Results from Navy participants at sea were compared to another Navy sample and a general military sample performing the same task on land. This was done to understand if Navy personnel can better tolerate sickness than the general mi
