Histological and ultrastructural study of Myxobolus mugchelo (Parenzan, 1966) with initial histopathology survey of the Liza ramada host intestine.

This paper provides histological and ultrastructural data on Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa), a parasite of the intestinal wall of thinlip mullet Liza ramada from the Comacchio lagoons (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). About 80% of the examined mullets were infected with this myxozoan. In histological sections, the plasmodia appeared rounded to ovoid and spindle shaped, measured 181.61 ± 97 × 122.79 ± 53.16 μm (mean ± standard deviation, SD) in size. Early sporogenic plasmodia were located primarily in the muscle layer where no pronounced inflammatory response was detected. Plasmodia containing mat

Ontogenetic dietary shifts and bioaccumulation of diphenhydramine in Mugil cephalus from an urban estuary.

Though bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals has received attention in inland waters, studies of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation in estuarine and marine systems are limited. Further, an understanding of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation across size classes of organisms displaying ontogenetic feeding shifts is lacking. We selected the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, a euryhaline and eurythermal species that experiences dietary shifts with age, to identify whether a model base, diphenhydramine, accumulated in a tidally influenced urban bayou. We further determined whether diphenhydramine accumulation d

Larval Gnathostoma spinigerum Detected in Asian Swamp Eels, Monopterus albus, Purchased from a Local Market in Yangon, Myanmar.

The present study was performed to determine the infection status of swamp eels with Gnathostoma sp. larvae in Myanmar. We purchased total 37 Asian swamp eels, Monopterus albus, from a local market in Yangon in June and December 2013 and 2014. All collected eels were transferred with ice to our laboratory and each of them was examined by the artificial digestion technique. A total of 401 larval gnathostomes (1-96 larvae/eel) were detected in 33 (89.2%) swamp eels. Most of the larvae (n=383; 95.5%) were found in the muscle. The remaining 18 larvae were detected in the viscera. The advanced thir

Genomic landscape underlying pituitary epigenome divergence between stickleback ecotypes.

The diversification of epigenetic regulation, including chromatin accessibility, is crucial for adaptation to diverse environments. Chromatin regulation in endocrine organs, such as the pituitary gland, plays a critical role in controlling various physiological processes underlying life-history traits, including growth, metabolism and reproduction. To understand the genetic architecture responsible for epigenomic divergence, we investigated chromatin accessibility in the pituitary gland using a parapatric pair of marine and stream ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatu

Dietary Azolla meal enhances growth, immune status, and liver health in thin-lip grey mullet (Liza ramada) fingerlings: a sustainable approach to Aquafeed optimization.

This study assessed the nutritional, immunological, and hepatic impacts of dietary Azolla meal (Azolla pinnata) as a sustainable alternative to conventional plant-based feed ingredients in Liza ramada (thin-lip grey mullet) aquaculture. Fingerlings were fed isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets where Azolla meal progressively replaced soybean meal and yellow corn at inclusion levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% over a 10-week period. Results revealed that the 10% inclusion level optimally enhanced growth performance (final body weight, weight gain), feed conversion ratio (1.78), and protein effi

Genetic diversity of Toll-like receptor 9 in swamp eels (Monopterus albus).

The swamp eel, Monopterus albus, is an important aquaculture species in Asia (mainly China) whose production has seriously suffered from infectious diseases. In spite of the critical requirement for aquaculture practices, to date there is scant information on its immune defence. Here, the genetic characteristics of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), which plays crucial roles in the initiation of host defence against microbial invasion, were analysed. It exhibits a striking lack of genetic variation resulting from a recent demographic bottleneck. A comparison with the homologue of M. javanensis revea

Otolith shape and elemental signatures provide insights into the connectivity of euryhaline Chelon labrosus inhabiting two close estuaries with different burdens of xenoestrogens in the Southern Bay of Biscay.

Intersex gonads have been observed in thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus, inhabiting estuaries with high burdens of xenoestrogens in the Southeast Bay of Biscay, but knowledge of population connectivity among estuaries is lacking for this euryhaline fish species. This study investigates the population structure of C. labrosus using otolith shape and elemental signatures of 60 adults (overall length ∼ 38 cm) from two estuaries 21 nautic miles apart, one with a high incidence of intersex condition (Gernika), and the other one pristine (Plentzia). Otolith shape analyses were performed using ell

The timing and development of infections in a fish-cestode host-parasite system.

The cestode Schistocephalus solidus is a common parasite in freshwater threespine stickleback populations, imposing strong fitness costs on their hosts. Given this, it is surprising how little is known about the timing and development of infections in natural stickleback populations. Previous work showed that young-of-year stickleback can get infected shortly after hatching. We extended this observation by comparing infection prevalence of young-of-year stickleback from 3 Alaskan populations (Walby, Cornelius and Wolf lakes) over 2 successive cohorts (2018/19 and 2019/20). We observed strong v

Cross-continental experimental infections reveal distinct defence mechanisms in populations of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus.

Epidemiological traits of host-parasite associations depend on the effects of the host, the parasite and their interaction. Parasites evolve mechanisms to infect and exploit their hosts, whereas hosts evolve mechanisms to prevent infection and limit detrimental effects. The reasons why and how these traits differ across populations still remain unclear. Using experimental cross-infection of three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus and their species-specific cestode parasites Schistocephalus solidus from Alaskan and European populations, we disentangled host, parasite and interaction eff

A New Species of Synbranchiella (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) from the Mountain Mullet ( Dajaus monticola) in Costa Rica.

A new species of the recently erected genus of proteocephalid cestodes, Synbranchiella Arredondo, Alves and Gil de Pertierra, 2017 , is described based on specimens found in the mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola (Bancroft, 1834), from Costa Rica. The new species is placed in Synbranchiella because of the cortical position of the genital organs (typical of the former subfamily Monticelliinae); a robust scolex (lacking a metascolex) having a dome-shaped apex and biloculate suckers (lacking free posterior margins); vitelline follicles in 2 narrow lateral bands; a vagina always anterior to the cir

The right response at the right time: Exploring helminth immune modulation in sticklebacks by experimental coinfection.

Parasites are one of the strongest selective agents in nature. They select for hosts that evolve counter-adaptive strategies to cope with infection. Helminth parasites are special because they can modulate their hosts' immune responses. This phenomenon is important in epidemiological contexts, where coinfections may be affected. How different types of hosts and helminths interact with each other is insufficiently investigated. We used the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) - Schistocephalus solidus model to study mechanisms and temporal components of helminth immune modulation.

Major host transitions are modulated through transcriptome-wide reprogramming events in Schistocephalus solidus, a threespine stickleback parasite.

Parasites with complex life cycles have developed numerous phenotypic strategies, closely associated with developmental events, to enable the exploitation of different ecological niches and facilitate transmission between hosts. How these environmental shifts are regulated from a metabolic and physiological standpoint, however, still remain to be fully elucidated. We examined the transcriptomic response of Schistocephalus solidus, a trophically transmitted parasite with a complex life cycle, over the course of its development in an intermediate host, the threespine stickleback, and the final a

Climate change alters the reproductive phenology and investment of a lacustrine fish, the three-spine stickleback.

High-latitude lakes are particularly sensitive to the effects of global climate change, demonstrating earlier ice breakup, longer ice-free seasons, and increased water temperatures. Such physical changes have implications for diverse life-history traits in taxa across entire lake food webs. Here, we use a five-decade time series from an Alaskan lake to explore effects of climate change on growth and reproduction of a widely distributed lacustrine fish, the three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We used multivariate autoregressive state-space (MARSS) models to describe trends in the

Quantitative genetic analysis of brain size variation in sticklebacks: support for the mosaic model of brain evolution.

The mosaic model of brain evolution postulates that different brain regions are relatively free to evolve independently from each other. Such independent evolution is possible only if genetic correlations among the different brain regions are less than unity. We estimated heritabilities, evolvabilities and genetic correlations of relative size of the brain, and its different regions in the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We found that heritabilities were low (average h(2) = 0.24), suggesting a large plastic component to brain architecture. However, evolvabilities of differen

Proteomic Differences Reveal Early Development of Contrasting Energetic Strategies Between Divergent Migratory Ecotypes in Three-Spined Stickleback.

Divergence in migratory behaviour represents a striking and common axis of life-history variation in animals. Plastic changes in adult animals in preparation for migration are well known, but the differences in early development between migratory and non-migratory forms are not well documented. These differences might contribute to reproductive isolation because of the potentially substantial divergence in metabolism and physiology. Here we document substantial differences between migratory ecotypes in sarcomeric development and energetic pathways from immediately after hatching. On North Uist

A proposed mechanism of ammonia excretion in the seahorse brood pouch revealed by rhesus glycoprotein localization.

In seahorses (family Syngnathidae), the male brood pouch provides a protected environment for developing embryos. During pregnancy, embryos develop within an enclosed brood pouch, requiring a physiological mechanism to eliminate the nitrogenous waste excreted by the embryos. This study investigated the expression and localization of rhesus (Rh) glycoproteins, expected to function as ammonia transporters, in the brood pouch of the pot-bellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis. The expression of the RhAG, RhBG, and RhCG2 genes in the pouch was confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain r

Excretory-secretory products from the parasite Schistocephalus solidus modulate threespine stickleback splenocytes.

Helminths can modulate the immune systems of their hosts through the release of soluble molecules known as excretory-secretory products (ESPs). To better understand the extent and mechanisms behind helminth-mediated immunosuppression, we used an emerging model of immunoparasitology, threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and its tapeworm parasite Schistocephalus solidus. We examined the impacts of exposure to ESPs of S. solidus (SsESPs) originating from Canadian lakes on the viability of threespine stickleback splenocytes in vitro. We found that exposure to SsESPs from Gosling Lake si
