High-dose anti-snake venom versus low-dose anti-snake venom in the treatment of poisonous snake bites--a critical study.

OBJECTIVES: To asses the optimum dose of anti-snake venom to treat snake bites cases effectively. This is particulary relevant in the present scenario when the cost of anti-snake venom ( Serum Institute of India) has gone up to nearly Rs. 400 per vial and the cross-section of people usually affected belong to the poor socioeconomic class. METHODOLOGY: One hundred snake bite cases with envenomation, irrespective of whether they were bitten by viper, cobra or krait, brought within 24 hours of the bite to Jubilee Mission Hospital, Trichur, Kerala State during the 15 months from August 2001 to Oc…

Delayed Neurological Manifestation in Krait Bites Despite Anti-snake Venom Therapy.

A severe medical emergency that poses a life-threatening risk is envenomation from a snake bite. Among the several snake families, krait bites are known to result in neurological symptoms, including ptosis, headache, and sweating. A 12-year-old adolescent boy who had been bitten by a krait appeared in this instance. The patient showed neurological symptoms after receiving anti-snake venom (ASV). He had three rounds of ASV and made a full recovery. To the best of our knowledge, there have not yet been any reports of this kind of delayed neurological signs after a krait bite, despite getting ASV

Relaxation incisions of venomous snake "Japanese mamushi" bites to the hand.

Gloydius blomhoffii, commonly known as Japanese mamushi, is a venomous viper species found widely in Japan. The most frequently bitten regions are the fingers and toes, and severe swelling causes compression of peripheral arteries and/or compartment syndrome of the extremities. We experienced four cases of mamushi bites to the hand, and undertook relaxation incision in the hands of three of these patients. As a result, the patients who underwent relaxation incision did not show any skin necrosis or permanent sensory disturbance in the affected fingers. Relaxation incision can be useful to not

Snake bites in Moyen Chari district, Chad: a five-year experience.

Snake bites are of major public health importance in Africa as a cause of morbidity and mortality. Echis ocellatus is responsible for the majority of envenomation cases in West Africa. Antivenom immunotherapy is the only specific treatment available for envenomed patients. From January 1997 to December 2001, 325 patients suffering from snake bites were enrolled in a survey undertaken at Goundi Hospital, Chad. We analysed the percentage of envenomed patients, sex distribution, distribution along the year, lethality, hospital stay and recovery clotting time. Two hundred and ninety-eight patients…

[Evaluation and treatment of snake bites in Bancoumana village in Mali].

A retrospective study was conducted on the epidemiological patterns and treatment of snakebites in the village of Bancoumana, 60 km south-west from Bamako. We analysed a total of 17 cases (8 males and 9 females). The distribution of snakebite cases by gender and by age showed that among subjects aged 5 to 20 years, boys were more exposed than girls (6 vs. 2), whereas, in those of 21 years and above, females were more frequently bitten than males (7 vs. 2) (p = 0.04). The treatment was mainly based on the use of anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, and sometimes of saline, glucose or anti-tetan

An ischemic complication of a snake bite: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Snakebite is a common type of animal bite injury worldwide. The local effect can manifest as an abscess followed by cellulitis and compartment syndrome which could cause ischemic tissue damage. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of a 40-year male with a history of a snake bite 4 days back complained of swelling, throbbing pain, bluish discoloration of the skin and blackish discoloration of the little finger. Incision and drainage were done initially with disarticulation of the gangrenous little finger and finally treated with a split-thickness graft. CLINICAL DISCUSSION:

Snake bite associated with acute kidney injury.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a well-known life-threatening systemic effect of snake envenomation which commonly happens secondary to snake bites from families of Viperidae and Elapidae. Enzymatic toxins in snake venom result in injuries to all kidney cell types including glomerular, tubulo-interstitial and kidney vasculature. Pathogenesis of kidney injury due to snake envenomation includes ischaemia secondary to decreased kidney blood flow caused by systemic bleeding and vascular leakage, proteolytic degradation of the glomerular basement membrane by snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs), dep…

Broad ligament haematoma following a snake bite.

Haematomas in various body organs have been reported following snake bites. We report the case of a post-menopausal woman who presented with a broad ligament haematoma diagnosed two days after a viper bite which required blood transfusion and laparotomy. This rare possibility should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a woman presenting with a lower abdominal or pelvic mass, anaemia and a bleeding diathesis after a snake bite.
