[The treatment of social phobias: efficacy of cognitive and and behavioral group therapy].

55 patients with social phobias were given group cognitive-behavioural therapy. The study protocol comprised three phases: (1) the pre-inclusion phase with 5 individual consultations before group treatment; (2) the group phase itself, comprising 20 weekly sessions of 2 hours each and (3) the post-therapy phase, comprising a 6 month follow-up group session, and 2 evaluation sessions 6 and 12 months after the end of group therapy. The techniques used were assertiveness training and cognitive therapy. Assessments were carried out using the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (23), Brief standard self r

[A social study of a group of depressed patients recovering in a private clinic].

Depression is a widespread illness in Sardinia and is treated mainly in private clinics which accept National Health patients. The aim of the present study was to evidence socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of depressed subjects who turn to these clinics. Furthermore we will examine the reason which led to the choice of a private clinic on the basis of services provided by the same, of those available in public hospitals and of patients' psychopathological history and socioeconomic characteristics. We examined 122 depressed patients who had been admitted to a private clinic in Cagl

Three tests for randomness of attack of social groups during an epidemic.

It is suggested that investigation of the attack of social units can be more illuminating of an epidemic process than the usual study of secondary attack rates of individuals. Three tests for detecting non-random differences in the occurrence of a disease between two groups of social units are presented. In each method the number of units attacked (X) in one of two groups of units is considered, rather than the number of individuals attacked. The tests are: (a) to use the Monte Carlo method, computer simulation of the epidemic process, to obtain an empirical distribution to which the observed

Cognitive-behavioral group therapy versus group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder among college students: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: In this randomized controlled trial, cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was compared to group psychotherapy (GPT), a credible, structurally equivalent control condition that included only nonspecific factors of group treatment (such as group dynamics). METHODS: Participants were 45 college students at the University of Colorado with a primary diagnosis of SAD. Each treatment condition comprised eight group sessions lasting 2 hr each. Independent assessors (blind to treatment assignment) assessed participants at baseline and posttreatment wit

Cross-dimension-ambivalent in-group stereotypes: the moderating roles of social context of stereotype endorsement and in-group identification.

In this study, the authors examined in-group stereotypes that are cross-dimensionally ambivalent-simultaneously (a) positive in cognition-related content dimensions and negative in affect-related content dimensions or (b) negative in cognition-related content dimensions and positive in affect-related content dimensions-to establish whether endorsement of such in-group stereotypes depends on whether this process occurs in an intragroup versus intergroup context. Drawing on social identity theory, the authors predicted that (a) endorsement of cross-dimension-ambivalent in-group stereotypes would

Moclobemide in social phobia: a pilot open study. GRP Group. Groupe de Recherche en Psychopharmacologie.

In an open-label pilot study, 35 outpatients with social phobia (DSM-III-R) received moclobemide for 12 weeks. The dosing range was 300-600 mg/day. Eighteen patients completed the study and 28 received at least 4 weeks of treatment. There was a consistent improvement in the efficacy parameters. Moclobemide was effective in both major components of social phobia (fear and avoidance). Moclobemide seems as effective as conventional irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Tolerability was good apart from one occurrence of grand mal seizure.

The play fever: individual and group factors influence the contagion of play behaviour within social hominid groups.

Via the perception-action model and mirror neuron system, individuals replicate others' behaviour (behavioural/social contagion) and reduce prediction errors on other behaviours. Among contagious behaviours, play offers a safe context for cooperation, competition and tolerance. Thus, play contagion is interesting to better understand the evolution of social dynamics in many non-primates and primates, including humans. To our knowledge, no study has examined play contagion across social hominids nor analysed individual/group features to identify common modulators. In 2022-2025, we gathered all-

Measuring associations among social identification, group norms, and alcohol consumption: Testing a social identity model of behavioral associations (SIMBA).

Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the social identity model of behavioral associations (SIMBA) presents a novel way of conceptualizing and measuring the relationships among the constructs of social identity, group norms, and individual-level behavior-that is, as cognitive-behavioral associations that mutually interact in a triadic constellation and can be measured both implicitly and explicitly. While the social identity approach suggests that the interaction between social identity and group norms shapes individual behavior, the SIMBA-through adopting the metho

From the mouths of social media users: A focus group study exploring the social casino gaming-online gambling link.

Background and aims The potential link between social casino gaming and online gambling has raised considerable concerns among clinicians, researchers and policy makers. Unfortunately, however, there is a paucity of research examining this potential link, especially among young adults. This represents a significant gap given young adults are frequently exposed to and are players of social casino games. Methods To better understand the potential link between social casino games and online gambling, we conducted three focus groups (N = 30) at two large Canadian Universities with college students

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells promote inhibitory synapse development and social behavior.

The innate immune system shapes brain development and is implicated in neurodevelopmental diseases. It is critical to define the relevant immune cells and signals and their impact on brain circuits. In this work, we found that group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and their cytokine interleukin-13 (IL-13) signaled directly to inhibitory interneurons to increase inhibitory synapse density in the developing mouse brain. ILC2s expanded and produced IL-13 in the developing brain meninges. Loss of ILC2s or IL-13 signaling to interneurons decreased inhibitory, but not excitatory, cortical synapses.

Factors Associated with Primary Headache According to Diagnosis, Sex, and Social Group.

BACKGROUND: We previously showed that migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) have a high prevalence that differs markedly between social groups. Here, we aim to identify factors associated with migraine and TTH (possible risk factors) in three social groups to better understand the difference in prevalence between sexes, between different headache diagnoses, and between different social groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 3124 persons: 1007 blood donors (484 females, mean age 34.1), 1075 workers in an oil and gas factory (146 females, mean age 40.4), and 1042 medical students (…

Working alliance in individual and group cognitive therapy for social anxiety disorder.

The tripartite model of working alliance, including the therapeutic bond and agreement on tasks and goals, was examined in 54 patients who received individual or group cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) in a randomized trial. Alliance was significantly stronger in individual relative to group CBT but generally not related to outcome.

Quality over quantity: joint group dance strengthens schoolchildren's social connections and wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: Children are experiencing high levels of loneliness and mental health problems around the globe, with those from underserved communities being affected disproportionately. Group dance programmes, which facilitate social connections and wellbeing, can buffer against loneliness. However, we know little about the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of these programmes and their long-term and group-level effects. This study examined whether it is mere engagement in group dance or better individual dance performance that fosters social connections and wellbeing. METHODS: A pre-post des

Unsuccessful foragers acquire social information through group departure and travel in penguins.

Colonial animals are theoretically expected to use social information to reduce uncertainty regarding food location and quality; however, few empirical studies have investigated how they acquire and when they rely on such information. Here, we simultaneously tracked 96-116 breeding Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), corresponding to 35.6-43.0% of active breeders in a colony, across 653 foraging trips, and examined their movement decisions. We found that foraging site selection was most often predicted by individuals' own previous space use, but in 17.1% of trips, it was better predicted by

Attitude (In)congruence in Group Interactions Predicts Social Identification and Favouritism Behaviour.

Addressing widespread polarisation requires understanding how attitudes relate to identification and ingroup favouritism. Two studies employ interactive paradigms to examine whether attitude congruence produces behavioural consequences in addition to identification. In Study 1, participants (N = 375) responded to four novel attitude statements in groups of five and were randomised to either see the responses of the other participants, or to be blind. Ingroup favouritism was measured by token allocation. In Study 2, N = 413 participants in groups of six observed responses to one of three statem

Social Support in Group Medical Visits for Chronic Pain in Primary Care.

PURPOSE: Social support is associated with improved outcomes for people with chronic pain and is an important but understudied component of biopsychosocial pain care. We sought to explore how group medical visits facilitate 4 distinct types of social support-emotional, appraisal, informational, and instrumental-among primary care patients with chronic pain. METHODS: We collected qualitative data within a randomized trial of integrative group medical visits for chronic pain, focusing on 2 cohorts of English-speaking patients randomized to group medical visits. Data came from 16 observed group

Changes in Decentering Across Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

To further improve treatments, we need to better understand potential common treatment mechanisms, such as decentering, or the ability to observe thoughts and feelings as objective events in the mind rather than personally identifying with them (Safran & Segal, 1990). Therefore, this study examined whether 12 sessions of Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy (CBGT) for 63 clients (57.6% female, 50.8% White) diagnosed with social anxiety disorder led to increases in decentering and whether increased decentering was associated with improved outcome. Furthermore, this study examined whether decenter
