Social interaction anxiety and the discounting of positive interpersonal events.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has indicated that individuals with social interaction anxiety make biased interpretations of positive social interactions, with greater general apprehension in response to such events and more negative predictions about the future. There has also been some preliminary evidence for a second facet of interpretation bias, namely a failure to accept others' positive reactions at face value, but this has so far not been adequately studied. METHOD: The present study developed a new measure of this "discounting" dimension and utilized a nonclinical sample of undergraduat

Genetic and gene-environment interaction effects on preschoolers' social behaviors.

This study examined effects from a specific dopamine receptor gene (DRD4), environmental influences from parents and peers, and the interaction between them, on aggressive and prosocial behaviors of preschoolers. Children were classified as DRD4-L (n = 27) if they had at least one DRD4 allele with six to eight repeats and as DRD4-S (n = 35) if not. Parent-child interactions were coded when children were 3-4 years old. Peer interaction data and parent questionnaires were collected at age 5. DRD4-L children shared less with each other and parents were less sensitive during parent-twin triadic in

Social interaction and participation: formative evaluation of online CME modules.

INTRODUCTION: This exploratory study examines Canadian physicians' participation in online social activities and learning discussions, perceptions of online social closeness, barriers and motivators to participation, and perceptions of the impact of course duration and face-to-face meetings on learning. METHODS: Formative evaluations were administrated to physicians participating in two online continuing medical education (CME) courses. Responses were recorded and calculated by the Blackboard Learning System. Content analysis was used to categorize comments and identify influencing factors. O

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia, emotion, and emotion regulation during social interaction.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) figures prominently in emotional responding, but its exact role remains unclear. The present study tests two hypotheses: (1) Between-person differences in resting RSA are related to emotional reactivity, and (2) within-person changes in RSA are related to regulatory efforts. Pairs of women watched an upsetting film and discussed it. One woman in each of the experimental dyads was asked to either suppress or to reappraise during the conversation. Their partners and both members of the control dyads conversed naturally. Between-person differences in resting RSA

Trait hostility and ambulatory cardiovascular activity: responses to social interaction.

This study examined trait hostility and social interaction in relation to ambulatory cardiovascular activity in 40 male and 39 female undergraduates. Participants wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor and completed diary entries while engaged in everyday activities. Diary reports indicating that participants had been talking were used to identify cardiovascular readings taken during social interaction. Interaction effects for overall diastolic blood pressure and heart rate levels indicated that hostility was positively associated with these variables in men only. In addition, hostility was

Cardiovascular correlates of type A behavior components during social interaction.

This study examined the cardiovascular (CV) correlates of the primary Type A behavior components during social interactions. Brief dialogues were created to role-play (RP) stereotypic Type A and Type B ways of responding to three common social situations designed to elicit hostility (H), time-urgency (T), and competition (C). Situations and dialogues were validated by independent raters. Thirty undergraduate students were identified as Type A and 30 as Type B, with 15 males and 15 females in each group. Subjects were provided scripts for each of the six experimental RPs and rehearsed them prio

Altered social and cognitive control interactions during decision-making in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by fear and avoidance of social situations, yet many everyday decisions are made in the presence of others and are shaped by social influence. However, the influences of social anxiety on social decision-making and the underlying neural processes are not well understood. METHODS: Fifty-five adults with varying levels of social anxiety completed a social risk decision-making task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In each trial, participants chose between a safe option and a risky gamble against either a human or a computer opponent

Interacting effects of receiving social control and social support during smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Social control and support have effects on smoking cessation, but are mostly examined separately. PURPOSE: Interacting effects of social control and support are investigated, hypothesizing synergistic effects. METHODS: In 99 smokers, received social control and emotional support (both smoking specific) were assessed 2 weeks before a quit date (T1); objectively verified abstinence and self-reported numbers of cigarettes smoked daily were assessed 6 weeks after baseline (T2). RESULTS: For both outcomes, associations with control (T1) were moderated by support (T1), but beneficial

Virtual social interactions in social anxiety--the impact of sex, gaze, and interpersonal distance.

In social interactions, interpersonal distance between interaction partners plays an important role in determining the status of the relationship. Interpersonal distance is an important nonverbal behavior, and is used to regulate personal space in a complex interplay with other nonverbal behaviors such as eye gaze. In social anxiety, studies regarding the impact of interpersonal distance on within-situation avoidance behavior are so far rare. Thus the present study aimed to scrutinize the relationship between gaze direction, sex, interpersonal distance, and social anxiety in social interaction

Descriptive Analyses of Behaviors during Social Interactions.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders demonstrate difficulty initiating and maintaining eye contact from early infancy into adulthood. However, interventions aimed at improving eye contact lack normative eye contact data to guide treatment. METHODS: The current study quantified behaviors (e.g., eye contact, vocalizations, head/shoulder, and hand movement) exhibited by college students during social encounters to gather normative data regarding the duration of targeted behaviors. A latent profile analysis was also used to identify participants' patterns of responding. RESU

Self-perceived halitosis influences social interactions.

BACKGROUND: To determine the impact of self-perceived halitosis on social interactions, and the effect of using an oral rinse for management of halitosis. METHODS: A survey among a representative sample of the Dutch population (n = 1082), and a pre-post study among a sample of consecutive coming-by volunteers (n = 292). RESULTS: Participants of the representative sample rated their oral odor as 66.8 ± 17.2 and the consecutive volunteers as 70.9 ± 16.7 (range: 0-100). Sizable proportions (15.3 % and 38.1 %, respectively) indicated to always take into account their (bad) oral odor when meeting

Characterization of operant social interaction in rats: effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, housing conditions, and choice between social interaction vs. food or remifentanil.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Social factors play a critical role in drug addiction. We recently showed that rats will abstain from methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and remifentanil self-administration when given a choice between the addictive drug and operant social interaction. Here, we further characterized operant social interaction by determining the effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, and housing conditions. We also determined choice between social interaction vs. palatable food or remifentanil. METHODS: We first trained single-housed male and female rats to lever-press fo

Appraisal of social interaction and social motivation in homeless-experienced veterans: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Initiatives developed by the Department of Veteran Affairs have reduced Veteran homelessness, but homeless-experienced veterans (HEVs) still face social integration challenges, such as reduced social interactions. Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment provides a valuable way to remotely gather data on these challenges in HEVs' daily lives. Social interactions are part of a behavioral sequence, involving a social interaction, its appraisal (pleasant/successful vs. unpleasant/unsuccessful), and subsequent motivation for future social interaction. Motivation can be in the fo

Positive affect predicts avoidance goals in social interaction anxiety: testing a hierarchical model of social goals.

Models of self-regulation suggest that social goals may contribute to interpersonal and affective difficulties, yet little research has addressed this issue in the context of social anxiety. The present studies evaluated a hierarchical model of approach and avoidance in the context of social interaction anxiety, with affect as a mediating factor in the relationship between motivational tendencies and social goals. This model was refined in one undergraduate sample (N = 186) and cross-validated in a second sample (N = 195). The findings support hierarchical relationships between motivational te

Social presence and its role in social interactions: Insights, challenges and a call for action.

Over the past decades, we have seen a fundamentally new form of social interaction become more and more common in our everyday lives: mediated social interactions, in which we do not speak to a person face-to-face, but the interaction takes place via a video call or some other form of technology. While most people would agree that a mediated interaction is somehow different from a face-to-face interaction, we currently lack a framework for conceptualizing what exactly is different. This is especially important when studying how mediated interactions shape our understanding of others' mental st

Brain mechanisms of social signalling in live social interactions with autistic and neurotypical adults.

The simple act of watching another person can change a person's behaviour in subtle but important ways; the individual being watched is now capable of signalling to the watcher, and may use this opportunity to communicate to the watcher. Recent data shows that people will spontaneously imitate more when being watched. Here, we examine the neural and cognitive mechanisms of being watched during spontaneous social imitation in autistic and neurotypical adults using fNIRS brain imaging. Participants (n = 44) took part in a block-moving task where they were instructed only to copy the block sequen

Social interaction and social withdrawal in rodents as readouts for investigating the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

Negative symptoms (e.g., asociality and anhedonia) are a distinct symptomatic domain that has been found to significantly affect the quality of life in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Additionally, the primary negative symptom of asociality (i.e., withdrawal from social contact that derives from indifference or lack of desire to have social contact) is a major contributor to poor psychosocial functioning and has been found to play an important role in the course of the disorder. Nonetheless, the pathophysiology underlying these symptoms is unknown and currently available treatment optio

The effects of maternal social phobia on mother-infant interactions and infant social responsiveness.

BACKGROUND: Social phobia aggregates in families. The genetic contribution to intergenerational transmission is modest, and parenting is considered important. Research on the effects of social phobia on parenting has been subject to problems of small sample size, heterogeneity of samples and lack of specificity of observational frameworks. We addressed these problems in the current study. METHODS: We assessed mothers with social phobia (N = 84) and control mothers (N = 89) at 10 weeks in face-to-face interactions with their infants, and during a social challenge, namely, engaging with a stran

Context shapes action understanding in social interactions.

In social interactions, individuals anticipate what others are about to do next, enabling smooth social interactions and coexistence in daily life. Here, we examined how kinematic and contextual cues are weighted and integrated to predict an interactor's actions during dynamic, real-time competitive interactions. We analyzed 76 participants (38 dyads) freely playing 300 games of rock-paper-scissors each while tracking their kinematics using motion capture. Although movement kinematics consistently conveyed intention-related information, successful action selection depended primarily on how thi

Tuning in to real-time social interactions in macaques.

Movement synchronization between individuals has been implicated in reinforcing their cohesion. How might such interindividual motor entrainment be controlled by the social brain? The answer remains elusive owing largely to the lack of suitable animal models in which direct neural recordings are available. Here, we show that macaque monkeys exhibit social motor entrainment without human prompting. We found that repetitive arm movements for horizontal bar sliding were phase coherent between two monkeys. The nature of motor entrainment was specific to animal pairs, consistent across days, depend
