The growth of interest in social networks has underscored the need for integrative analyses of network dimensions. A three-pronged strategy to achieve this objective was pursued in a study of 261 married women nurses. First, network variables related to important adult social identities were differentiated. Factor analyses revealed four network interaction factors: work support, work rejection, general support, and general rejection. The state of the science as it relates to the stress-mediating role of social support in the health care work environment is explored. The ability to build a nursing leadership workforce is dependent upon a type of social support mechanism that mediates the inherent stress that comes along with managerial positions. That having a baby in hospital undergoing intensive care is a stressful experience is beyond dispute. Every parent, no matter how well-developed their own personal resources, depends to some extent on the support of others within their social system to cope with this stress. Grandparents occupy a special place in support networks and their role was studied in families with a very low birthweight baby. Both professional and lay perspectives were investigated and 93 families participated. Questionnaires were sent to family members 1 month after the baby's birth and 1 month after discharge home.

In data from two cohorts of urban adolescents, measures of coping through support-seeking from peers and adults were related to indices of cigarette smoking and alcohol use. Peer support was positively related to substance use, whereas parental and other adult support were inversely related to substance use. This article reports a study of the function and composition of social support networks among diverse lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men and women (n = 396) in comparison to their heterosexual peers (n = 128). This study is the first, to our knowledge, to evaluate the relationship between mental health and social support in a large, random sample of college students.
