Factors Influencing School Social Workers' Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Behaviors.

School social workers (SSWers) play a central role in child abuse and neglect (CAN) reporting, yet few empirical studies have examined factors that influence SSWers' reporting practices. Using data from a national survey of 455 SSWers, this study examined how training, bias awareness, and beliefs about child protective services (CPS) influence SSWers' CAN reporting behavior. The role of individual-level and school-level demographic factors was also considered. Findings indicated that SSWers who were White (OR = 1.61, p = .034), OR = 0.77, p = .004), worked in a school serving higher proportion…

Global Prevalence of Client Violence Against Social Workers: A Meta-Analysis.

Client violence adversely affects social workers' psychology and professional practice. This meta-analysis synthesised quantitative evidence on client violence prevalence. We searched for relevant articles in Scopus, Web of Science, and Academic Search Premier up to March 2025 and screened them using predefined criteria. The study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. A random-effects model was used for meta…

[Chickenpox seroprevalence among healthcare and social assistance workers in Catalonia (Spain)].

AIMS: Chickenpox is a frequent and contagious disease in healthcare and social assistance settings, and there are limited data on seroprevalence among workers in this sector. We estimated susceptibility to chickenpox among workers, by demographic and occupational variables, and measured the rate of seroprotection after vaccination. METHODS: A retrospective seroprevalence study of chickenpox (varicella) and serological vaccine response. The earliest recorded varicella serology, analyzed by the ELISA method, was identified for each worker from a health surveillance database of a group of medica

Stress management consultation to Israeli social workers during the Gulf War.

Social workers operating under emergency conditions may feel overwhelmed and incapacitated by their own stress reactions. During the Gulf War, social work faculty in Israel acted as consultants to help hospital social workers manage stress and regain professional efficacy. The Stress Management Consultation (SMC) was a short-term group intervention designed to enable social workers to work through their stress reactions and to model a method the workers could use with their own target populations. Qualitative feedback from both participants and administrators indicated that the SMC model was e…

COVID-19 and First Responder Social Workers: An Unexpected Mental Health Storm.

COVID-19 has disproportionally affected people living in poverty; new immigrants; and those living in healthcare settings (hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes), shelters, detention centers, and prisons. The pandemic has also significantly impacted social workers who face hidden mental health consequences. The resultant feelings and behaviors are similar to disaster-induced trauma, including excessive rumination, hypervigilance, exhaustion, and excessive crying as a result of the adrenaline-driven fight-or-flight response. This article aims to provide information for social workers to protect…

Participants completed an online questionnaire comprising demographics, the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, and the Empathy Scale for Social Workers. A moderated moderation model was used to evaluate the hypothesized relationship between the amount of trauma in clinician caseload and STS, as moderated by empathy and…

(Inter)mediation and support: core interdisciplinary purposes of social workers in oncology.

Cancer is one of the greatest health challenges of our time. This study addresses the issue through the work of social workers in Portuguese hospital units and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that provide oncology care. We aim to understand the main roles assumed by social workers and the constraints they face in a context that demands constant interdisciplinarity and interinstitutional coordination. Data gathered from fieldwork, based on interviews and documentary research, show that the roles of social workers in oncology are quite diverse, designed to meet the complex challenges that …

Genetic screening of prospective parents and of workers: some scientific and social issues.

Genetic screening programs are based on assumptions and values that reflect the history of racial and social eugenics in the United States and Europe. They stigmatize individuals by shifting the focus from social, economic, and political decisions that affect the health of prospective parents, newborns, and workers to "bad genes," that is, intrapersonal factors that are given the status of "causes" of disease. Prenatal screening, at best, can help the relatively few individuals who know that their future children are at risk for a particular inherited disease or disability; it has little posit

At the Forefront: Social Workers' Role in Psilocybin Treatment for Depression and Substance Misuse.

This article underscores the critical role of social workers in harnessing the potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) and substance use disorder (SUD). Contemporary treatments for MDD often have side effects, and the success rate for SUD treatments remains low. The pervasiveness of MDD, combined with the challenges in treating SUD, highlights a need for innovative treatments. This article provides an overview of the resurgence of literature over the past two decades that illuminates the therapeutic promise of psilocybin for mental health treat…
