[Chlorinate solvents natural biodegradation in shallow groundwater].

Chlorinated solvents contaminations are most popular in shallow groundwater. A serious local groundwater contamination of chlorinated solvents is founded in a north city of China during the organic pollution investigation. On the basis of the available data and the determining methods of chlorinated solvents biodegradation in groundwater under natural conditions, research on chlorinated solvents biodegrading potential is carried out. The results show that the ground water environment parameters, Eh and pH of the groundwater, indirect sign of biodegradation, i.e. NO3- changing, and concentratio…

[Effect of organic solvents on hearing organ].

This paper reviews the studies of ototoxicity of organic solvents. Experimental and clinical studies show some harmful effects exerted on hearing organ by organic solvents, especially by toluene, xylene, styrene, carbon disulfide, n-hexane and trichloroethylene. These chemicals may affect different levels of auditory pathways. When assessing these effects in industrial conditions, it is necessary to consider the noise activity and interactions between organic solvents and noise. Further research should focus particularly on one major question on whether workplace conditions free from exceeding…

Localized scleroderma after exposure to organic solvents.

A 26-year-old female developed plaques characteristic of morphea on the volar surfaces of the forearms and on the dorsal surfaces on the ankles following an exposure to trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene and other solvents by inhalation. Exposure to chemicals has been known to be important as a provoking factor of systemic sclerosis. This patient shows that exposure to solvents could provoke localized scleroderma.

Doping of carbon nanotubes by halogenated solvents.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) play a unique role in the area of flexible conductors as they have remarkably high electrical conductivity and bend easily without deformation. Consequently, CNTs are commonly deposited on substrates as conductive tracks/coatings. Halogenated solvents are often employed to facilitate the deposition process because they dry rapidly due to their high volatility. In this work, we report that halogenated solvents can dope CNTs considerably. The study showed that the use of dichloromethane, chloroform, or bromoform for the CNT deposition significantly impacts the chemical po…

The Prebiotic Provenance of Semi-Aqueous Solvents.

The numerous and varied roles of phosphorylated organic molecules in biochemistry suggest they may have been important to the origin of life … formate from the hydrolysis of hydrogen cyanide, and demonstrate the stability of formamide in such solvents (as an aqueous mixture). The dissolution of hydroxylapatite requires a liquid medium, and we investigate whether a UAFW system is solid or liquid over varied conditions, finding that this characteristic is controlled by the molar ratios of the three …

Aryne Compatible Solvents are not Always Innocent.

Arynes are important and versatile intermediates in a variety of transformations. Commonly used solvents for aryne chemistry include acetonitrile and dichloromethane. Although rarely reported, the reactive nature of aryne intermediates makes them prone to side reactions, which sometimes involve solvent participation. Acetonitrile and dichloromethane are not always innocent solvents and can participate in aryne-based reactions. These results are presented in the context of ongoing mechanistic investigations of the triple aryne-tetrazine reaction.

Photooxidation mechanism of levomepromazine in different solvents.

Unwanted photoinduced responses are well-known adverse effects of most promazine drugs, including levomepromazine (LPZ, Levoprome(®) or Nozinan(®)). This drug is indicated in psychiatry primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia and other schizoaffective disorders. Levomepromazine's particular sedative properties make it especially fit for use in psychiatric intensive care. Nevertheless, it is photolabile under UV-A and UV-B light in aerobic conditions resulting in the formation of its sulfoxide. The LPZ photochemistry in acetonitrile (MeCN) is completely different from that in methanol (MeO

Hydrogen bonding properties of non-polar solvents.

A combination of high-throughput NMR titration experiments, UV-Vis absorption titrations and data collected from the literature on 1:1 H-bonded complexes has been used to characterise the H-bond properties of non-polar organic solvents: alkanes, perfluorocarbons, aromatic and halogenated organic solvents. The results are analysed in the context of the electrostatic solvent competition model, which assumes that solvent effects on intermolecular interactions can be interpreted based on the exchange of specific functional group contacts, with minimal involvement of the bulk solvent. For solvents …

Sleep disturbances and occupational exposure to solvents.

A solvent can be defined as "a liquid that has the ability to dissolve, suspend or extract other materials, without chemical change to the material or solvent". Numerous chemical or technical processes rely on these specific properties of organic solvents in industry. Occupational exposure to solvents is not rare and some activities may cause substantial exposure to these substances in the workforce. Short-term or acute exposures cause a prenarcotic syndrome, and long lasting exposure conditions have been associated with various neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, e.g., anosmia, heari…

Biologic markers of exposure to chlorinated solvents.

This article presents the current knowledge and clinical applications of the use of biomarkers of exposure to the halogenated solvents 1,1,1 trichloroethane (methylchloroform), trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene), and 1,1 dichloroethylene (vinylidene chloride). Although some studies have shown that protein and DNA adducts may form with chlorinated hydrocarbons, their application has not been validated sufficiently to justify their use as biologic markers of exposure.

Anaerobic transformations and bioremediation of chlorinated solvents.

Chlorinated aliphatic compounds, notably the chlorinated solvents, are common contaminants in soil and groundwater at hazardous waste sites. While these compounds are often recalcitrant, under favorable conditions they can be transformed and degraded through microbially mediated processes. There is great interest in understanding the transformations that are observed at contaminated sites and in manipulating these systems to achieve remediation. An important class of transformations occurs in anaerobic environments. Many of the transformations are reductive, and many yield useful energy to spe…

Relative efficiency of solvents used in endodontics.

A root canal model was used to test the relative efficiency of various commonly used endodontic solvents including eucalyptol, eucalyptus oil, orange oil, chloroform, and xylene to dissolve or soften gutta-percha and several different types of sealers (Proco-Sol, AH26, and Sealapex). There was no significant difference in the ability of the solvents to dissolve gutta-percha and the zinc oxide-eugenol-based sealer Proco-Sol. The resin-based sealer, AH26, was only dissolved in chloroform and took considerable time (> 30 min). The calcium hydroxide-based sealer, Sealapex, could not be tested beca…

CNS depressant effects of volatile organic solvents.

Volatile chemicals used widely as solvents can produce acute effects on the nervous system and behavior after inhalation exposure, and many are subject to abuse. This review considers the nature of the acute effects of volatile organic solvents by comparing their actions to those of classical CNS depressant drugs such as the barbiturates, benzodiazepines and ethanol. Like CNS depressant drugs, selected inhalants have been shown to have biphasic effects on motor activity, disrupt psychomotor performance, have anticonvulsant effects, produce biphasic drug-like effects on rates of schedule-contro…

Vestibulo-oculomotor disturbances caused by industrial solvents.

Animal experiments show that intoxication with hydrocarbon solvents influences the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex arc and indicate that the solvents block the inhibition of the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex presumably exerted by the cerebellum. The blood concentrations necessary to elicit oculomotor disturbances in animals were smaller than those that disturbed the vestibular function. Accordingly, in human experiments styrene and toluene exposure did not elicit any positional nystagmus but caused an increased saccade speed and a diminished visual suppression of vestibular nystagmus. Some cerebella…

Noise and solvent, alcohol and solvent: two dangerous interactions on auditory function.

While noise exposure is the most significant contributor to occupational hearing loss, recent evidence points to solvents and their interactions as additional contributors to occupational deafness. Furthermore, due to the metabolic competitive inhibition between aromatic solvents and ethanol, the solvent toxicity can be even enhanced in certain circumstances. So, two dangerous interactions: noise and solvents, solvents and ethanol deserve to be taken into consideration in an exhaustive preventive policy. Based on the investigations reviewed in the present study, it appears that the combined ef…
