[Pathophysiology and treatment of spinal cord medulla injuries].

In view of the ever increasing incidence of spinal cord injuries and their very high socioeconomic costs studies are conducted for reduction of their consequences. In recent years considerable advances have been achieved in their treatment. The contribution of various mechanisms damaging spinal cord is known presently rather well, with isolation of two groups of causes: one is the primary spinal cord injury as a result of direct force acting on it during trauma, the other is secondary damage caused by vascular changes following trauma, free radicals, calcium distribution changes, participation…

Spinal cord injuries--epidemiology in Portugal's central region.

This study concerns spinal cord injuries (SCI) in a region of Portugal with a population of 1,721,650 inhabitants. Legislation has made it possible to identify deaths occurring during collection and transport. Between 1989 and 1992, 398 new cases of spinal cord injuries were identified, of which 77% were male and 23% female. The average age was 50, with a range of between 1 and 92. As far as the type of injury is concerned, there were 154 isolated SCI (38.7%); in 120 cases (30.1%) there were multiple associated injuries; in 66 cases (16.6%) there was an associated traumatic brain injury; in 34…

Sexual issues of women with spinal cord injuries.

The need for research addressing problems unique to women with spinal cord injuries is well documented. Consequently, 231 such women, ages 18 to 45, were surveyed. Demographic characteristics and data relating to physician usage, female hygiene, pregnancy, contraception and sexuality were collected. Analysis revealed that 60% of the respondents had post injury amenorrhea; the average time until menses resumption was 5 months. The group's post injury pregnancy rate was one-third its pre injury rate, but women with incomplete paraplegia had significantly more pregnancies than those with complete…

During these four years 560 patients with acute spinal cord injury (SCI) were admitted to the hospitals in the city of Taipei. Of these, 123 were inhabitants of Taipei city, showing the annual incidence of SCI in Taipei to be 14.6 per million population. As a result of injury 118 patients were paraparetic, 180 were paraplegic, 117 tetraparetic and 145 were tetraplegic. The average age was 36 years and 2 months and one third were in the 20 to 29 year age gro…

Therapeutic groups for patients with spinal cord injuries.

A preliminary study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of therapeutic patient groups in a rehabilitation setting. A spinal cord knowledge "Inventory" test was designed to evaluate the success of the group method in disseminating information to patients. The first part of this test assesses the patient's knowledge about body physiology and functioning, health care, and community resources. The second part attempts to evaluate the patient's feelings regarding his body image, sexual attractiveness, and family relationships. The test was administered to 31 spinal cord injured patients up

Spine and spinal cord injuries--causes and complications.

BACKGROUND: The spine as a motor organ is very often exposed to the action of forces released by an injury. The most frequent cause of spine and spinal cord injuries are traumas which are the result of accidents, and untreated osteoporosis or neoplasms as well. OBJECTIVES: Aim of the study is an analysis of the causes of spine and spinal cord injuries as well as of the complications of these injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material covers 130 patients hospitalized due to spine injury in 2008-2010 at the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery of Wroclaw Medical University. The data has been …

Spinal cord injuries: acute care management and rehabilitation.

Spinal cord injury can have a devastating effect on patients and their families. An understanding of the mechanism of injury and how this can relate to functional ability assists healthcare professionals to anticipate the care that is required and any difficulties that the patient may encounter. Knowledge of spinal cord injury and the effects on the cardiorespiratory, gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems enables clinicians to provide effective care tailored to actual and potential complications, such as spinal shock and autonomic dysreflexia.

Injuries to the spinal cord in elderly patients.

There are certain differences between the mechanism of injury and the course and results of treatment of post-traumatic spinal cord injuries in younger and older victims. Between 1965 and 1990 there were 564 patients over 60 years of age with spinal cord or cauda equina injuries treated at the Spinal Cord Centre in Konstancin, Poland. This article presents the level and degree of the nervous system injury, the methods of treatment and early mortality in the series. Of the patients, 43 per cent were aged between 60 and 65 years, but 31 per cent were patients over 70 years of age. More patients …

Traumatic spinal cord injuries in Greenland 1965-1986.

During the period 1 January 1965 to 31 December 1986, 27 patients were admitted to the Rehabilitation Hospital in Hornbaek after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) sustained in Greenland. The commonest cause of injury was attempted suicide (7 patients), of which 6 were jumps from buildings. Six resulted from accidental falls to a level below and even 2 out of the 3 cases of SCI following violence were due to falls. There was only one traffic injury, a motor cycle accident. Fourteen patients were under the influence of alcohol at time of injury. Nine were tetraplegic (3 complete, 6 incomplete),

[Neonatal spinal cord injuries and magnetic resonance imaging].

Two cases of spinal cord injury involving the lower cervical region are reported. In both, the delivery of a breech presentation was difficult. Severe hypotonia, areflexia and autonomic nervous system disturbances suggested a spinal cord injury. The evidence, type, and location of the cord lesion were given by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Four children with brain injury were later found to have coexisting spinal cord injury (SCI). Findings that warrant investigation for coexisting SCI include a dermatome pattern sensory loss; absence of movement and reflexes in either both arms or both legs with preservation in the remaining extremities; flaccidity; absence of sacral reflexes; diaphragmatic breathing without use of accessory respiratory muscles; bradycardia with hypotension; autonomic hyperreflexia; poikilothermia; unexplained urinary retention; history of neck pain; unexplained ileus; priapism; and the presence of clonus in an

Psychiatric disorders in patients with spinal cord injuries.

Although previous studies have reported that all patients with spinal cord injuries experience depression, they have not distinguished between despondency and depressive disorder.
