Responding after Hurricane Helene: Rapidly Estimating Impacts to Environmental Health Services in North Carolina.

Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding and infrastructure damage across the mountainous regions of western North Carolina. Responding agencies had to make real-time decisions about emergency response, infrastructure repair, and aid allocation. Here, we describe how our decade-long transdisciplinary research program supported data-driven recovery decisions in the days following a storm through the development of a novel emergency response decision support system (DSS). Integrating publicly available and geospatial data sets, we estimated that 4% of the total land area across the initial

Experiences and lessons learned for delivery of micronutrient powders interventions.

An effective delivery strategy coupled with relevant social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) have been identified as central to the implementation of micronutrient powders (MNP) interventions, but there has been limited documentation of what works. Under the auspices of "The Micronutrient Powders Consultation: Lessons Learned for Operational Guidance," three working groups were formed to summarize experiences and lessons across countries regarding MNP interventions for young children. This paper focuses on programmatic experiences related to MNP delivery (models, platforms, and channe

Dracunculiasis eradication: target 1995.

Substantial progress has been achieved over the past 3 years by the campaign to eradicate dracunculiasis. The target of eradication by 1995 has been set by the African Regional Office of the World Health Organization and accepted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Program. India and Pakistan continue to reduce their cases of the disease dramatically. In Africa, Ghana and Nigeria conducted national village-by-village searches in 1988-1990 and, between them, found greater than 800,000 cases of the disease. Most African countries have now prepared na

Healthy and safe school environment, Part II, Physical school environment: results from the School Health Policies and Programs Study 2006.

BACKGROUND: As society continues to focus on the importance of academic achievement, the physical environment of schools should be addressed as 1 of the critical factors that influence academic outcomes. The School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) 2006 provides, for the first time, a comprehensive look at the extent to which schools have health-promoting physical school environment policies and programs. METHODS: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts the SHPPS every 6 years. In 2006, computer-assisted telephone interviews or self-administered mail questionnaires we

Nurses on the Frontlines of Collapse: Advocacy, Leadership, and HIV Care in the Wake of United States Agency for International Development's Withdrawal From Kenya, Malawi, and the Philippines.

The abrupt dissolution of United States Agency for International Development and the cessation of U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding have triggered a global health crisis, disproportionately affecting HIV services and frontline health systems across the Global South. This article explores how nurses are responding-not only by sustaining clinical care but by stepping into roles as policy advocates, organizers, and system innovators. Drawing from lived experiences in Kenya, Malawi, the Philippines, and beyond, we highlight the resilience, leadership, and moral clarity of nur

The negative effects of poverty & food insecurity on child development.

This paper addresses the importance of the first three years of life to the developing child, examines the importance of early childhood nutrition and the detrimental effects on child health and development due to poverty and food insecurity. As development experts learn more about the importance of the first three years of life, there is growing recognition that investments in early education, maternal-child attachment and nurturance, and more creative nutrition initiatives are critical to help break the cycle of poverty. Even the slightest forms of food insecurity can affect a young child's

Threat of foreign arthropod-borne pathogens to livestock in the United States.

There are many exotic animal pathogens throughout the world that, if introduced into the United States. could have a significant detrimental impact on the health of livestock, agricultural economy, the environment, and public health. Many of these pathogens are arthropod-borne and potential vectors are readily available in the United States. A number of these arthropod-borne pathogens are discussed here as examples that illustrate the potential risk and the consequences of inadvertent introductions. Several International agencies have a role in global surveillance and in controlling animal dis

Scarcity in the Covid-19 Pandemic.

As we write, U.S. cities and states with extensive community transmission of Covid-19 are in harm's way-not only because of the disease itself but also because of prior and current failures to act. During the 2009 influenza pandemic, public health agencies and hospitals developed but never adequately implemented preparedness plans. Focused on efficiency in a competitive market, health systems had few incentives to maintain stockpiles of essential medical equipment. Just-in-time economic models resulted in storage of only those supplies needed then. At the same time, global purchasing in search
