Clinical features, ictal manifestations, EEG and CT findings of two patients with CPS are presented. Status consisted of confusion associated with continuous focal EEG findings in both cases.

Two children had complex partial status epilepticus, a rare convulsive disorder. The presumptive clinical diagnosis was based on the complex symptomatology occurring within a fluctuating state of consciousness, and on unsustained responses. Non convulsive confusional status epilepticus is classically divided on the basis of the ictal EEG into absence status (AS) and complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE). Status epilepticus (SE) remains one of the most serious disorders affecting the central nervous system. Recent progress in understanding the mechanisms of the brain damage produced by SE make even more apparent the need to quickly terminate this condition, prevent its recurrence, and treat its complications. Intracellular calcium concentrations rise, prompting a cascade of excitotoxic consequences. Therapy for SE currently consists of agents which stop seizures (benzodiazepines, phenytoin, barbiturates). This review discusses their use in SE.
