Some aspects of diagnosis were studied together with treatment options for different disorders of the sternum, its fractures, and sternotomy-related complications in a series of 35 patients, with n = 9, 19 and 7 respectively. It has been ascertained that individualization of modalities of treatment permits securing a clinical effect in a major proportion of patients presenting with pathologies of seldom-occurring localizations.

Stress fracture of the sternum is a rare injury and can occur in young athletes due to repeated stress and in elderly with osteoporotic bones or other pathological conditions under normal stress. A case of a 14-year-old boy is reported who sustained fracture of the sternum without any history of significant trauma when he simply tried to lift his whole body over his arms and felt pain in front of the chest.

Injuries to the sternum and thoracic cage are relatively frequent in this age of motor-vehicle accidents, high-speed sports activities, and industrial injuries, yet non-union of a fracture of the sternum is exceptionally rare. Sternotomy is commonly performed in cardiothoracic surgery, and the sternum is usually divided vertically or transversely, but non-union of the sternal cut is rare. Fracture of the sternum in a child is especially rare.

Bones localization of hydatic disease is extremely rare (0.5-2.5 %). In approximative 50% of the cases of bones hydatidosis, the cysts are localized at spines vertebrae, broad bones and mandible. We present a case of a 38 years old female. The patient related an insidious beginning of symptoms, about 3-4 years before, with anterior chest pain, and 3-4 month before hospitalization, the presence of a sternal tumor, in upper portion of the bone. There are two objectives in the surgical repair of congenital total cleft sternum:(1) to afford normal bony protection to the mediastinal structures and (2) to provide stability of the anterior thorax so that respiratory function and circulation can be maintained physiologically within normal pressure relationships. A case is presented, and a new method for repair of this life-threatening congenital anomaly is described.

INTRODUCTION: Among the extra-pulmonary localizations, isolated tuberculosis of the sternum is rare and difficult to diagnose.
OBSERVATIONS: A 30 year-old man presented with tumefaction of the sternum that had developed over the past two months and a 52 year-old woman had developed a painful tumefaction of the sternum over the past 4 months. In both cases, the histopathological examination of a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Anti-bacterial therapy permitted the favourable progression of the disease.
