A double-blind clinical trial with cross-over was conducted for a period of 12 months in 25 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). The effect of the amyloglucosidase and glucoseoxidase containing Zendium toothpaste on the discomfort, number of exacerbations, duration of exacerbation, number of ulcers and number of days with pain caused by RAS was studied. The use of Zendium significantly reduced the sensation of discomfort from RAS as compared to the use of placebo toothpaste (0.025 greater than p greater than 0.01). However, the patients were unable to discriminate significantly b

BACKGROUND: Panitumumab is an anti-epithelial growth factor receptor monoclonal antibody, approved for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Panitumumab has been more commonly associated with skin toxicity; oral adverse events have been scarcely reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case report of panitumumab-associated aphthous-like stomatitis.
METHODS: A 58 years old female visited the Oral Oncology Unit complaining of severe oral pain. The patient had been diagnosed with colon cancer metastatic to the liver and was receiving panitumumab (every 14 days) concurrently with

Refractory recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RRAS) manifests as severe ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa with poor healing and a poor response to conventional therapy, with or without systemic diseases. Its treatment remains a clinical challenge owing to the lack of effective therapies. Recently, biologics have emerged as promising targeted therapies for RRAS. The biologics targeting specific inflammatory pathways involved in the pathogenesis of RRAS, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors and interleukin inhibitors, offer a more precise and promising therapeutic approach for RRAS.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common chronic disease of the oral cavity, affecting 5-25% of the population. The underlying etiology remains unclear, and no curative treatment is available. The present review examines the existing treatments for RAS with the purpose of answering a number of questions: How should these patients be treated in the dental clinic? What topical drugs are available and when should they be used? What systemic drugs are available and when should they be used? A literature search was made of the PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus databases, limited to articles

As it is known, many diseases of gastric system cause changes in the oral cavity, with either pathological findings or subjective impressions. When these changes are of pathological nature, the most common finding is recurrent aphthous stomatitis on the tongue, which emerges as a consequence of gastric diseases. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a disorder characterised by recurrent ulcerations limited to the oral mucosa, without any other signs of diseases. According to their clinical form, they may be big, small and hyperform. Etiology of recurrent aphthae is genetic predisposition, systemic

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Celiac disease is a condition related to the small intestine's intolerance to gluten. In epidemiologic studies the prevalence is highly variable. The diagnosis can be difficult due to the wide spectrum of signs and symptoms. As the risk for intestinal lymphoma is higher in these patients, early diagnosis has its privileges. The higher prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis in celiac disease led us to investigate the celiac disease prevalence in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, which might assist in diagnosis of asymptomatic celiac disease patients. The aim of

Patients presenting with oral mucosal disease can be challenging to diagnose and manage. There are several disorders that can present with similar clinical signs and symptoms, and knowledge of each disease will guide the clinician toward proper management. This article highlights recurrent aphthous stomatitis, a common ulcerative condition encountered in clinical practice. We review the etiology, clinical symptomatology, and topical/systemic therapies that are unique to this disorder and that will help clinicians diagnose and manage this condition.

Anxiety and salivary cortisol were measured in two groups of patients with recurrent aphthous ulceration. One group of patients had persistent aphthae (Group 1) and the others had been relieved of their aphthae following correction of detected haematinic deficiency states (Group 2). Anxiety was measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale and radioimmunoassay of salivary cortisol. There was a statistically significant increased proportion of borderline or clinically anxious patients in Group 1 compared to Group 2 (P < 0.05). Median salivary cortisol levels also showed a statistical

The authors review the literature on aetiopathogenesis and therapeutic management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The data regarding the role of genetic, nutritional and microbiological factors in the genesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis has been particularly examined. Despite significant associations with some antigens HLA have been reported in Southern Europe, there is no clear genetic predisposition in recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Several studies have analyzed the importance of iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiencies, gluten intolerance and sensitivity to certain foods in the

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by necrotizing ulcers of the oral mucosa that persist, remit, and recur for variable periods of time. Despite the benign nature of the disease, persistent pain and ulceration may disable patients from performing their daily activities. We describe three patients with long-standing active RAS treated with oral colchicine. All patients experienced a marked decrease in symptoms and a remission of the disease. Recurrences, however, occurred within three days of discontinuation of the therapy. In one patient, colchicine therapy was discontinued b

Immunocytochemical techniques using monoclonal antibodies directed against T-lymphocyte surface antigens (OKT3, OKT4, and OKT8) were used to investigate changes in the T-cell subpopulations throughout the natural time course of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). All lesions contained large numbers of OKT3-positive T cells. Preulcerative lesions were characterized by many OKT4-positive inducer/helper cells and few OKT8-positive suppressor/cytotoxic cells (T4:T8 approximately equal to 2:1). The ulcerative lesion contained large numbers of OKT8-positive suppressor/cytotoxic cells and only a ver

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common painful ulcers of oral mucosal which can cause many sufferings. Treatment of RAS often includes administration of corticosteroids, analgesics and regulators of the immune system. However, considering the side effects of these medications, even their topical application must be done with caution. Alum is used in traditional medicine for treatment of oral ulcers without significant side effect. This study sought to assess the effect of topical application of alum on aphthous ulcers.
METHODS: This clinical randomized double-blind

Recurrent aphthous stomatits (RAS) is also known as recurrent oral ulcers, recurrent aphthous ulcers, or simple or complex aphthosis. RAS is the most common inflammatory ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa in North American patients. RAS has been the subject of active investigation along multiple lines of research including epidemiology, immunology, clinical correlations and therapy. Clinical evaluation of the patient requires correct diagnosis of RAS and classification of the disease based on morphology (MIAU, MJAU, HU) and severity (simple versus complex). In order to properly diagnose a
