The symptoms of lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbid diagnoses were compared among 502 combat-experienced soldiers under examination for compensation-related purposes to confirm or deny the diagnosis of PTSD and 196 soldiers with combat experience without any psychiatric disorder. The two groups were matched with regard to duration of combat experience, time between combat experience and the study, age, marital status, and education. PTSD was diagnosed by psychiatrists with a structured clinical interview according to the research version of the International Classificat

AIM: To study the combined course and interaction of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychosis through detailed case studies.
METHODS: We described 6 case studies of Israeli veterans with PTSD and psychosis, who were referred to our Center for the evaluation of their psychiatric status.
RESULTS: All the patients developed PTSD shortly after the exposure to a combat/military trauma. Psychosis appeared after months or even years, sometimes after a trauma-related trigger. Psychotic symptoms, such as delusions or auditory hallucinations, were usually paranoid or depressive and related

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often accompanied by psychiatric comorbidity, usually depressive and anxiety disorders. Comorbidity with psychosis has seldom been described. We present 6 case-studies of Israeli military veterans with PTSD and psychosis (all men aged 28-43). All developed PTSD shortly after a period of months or even years, sometimes following trauma-related triggering. Psychotic symptoms such as delusions or auditory hallucinations usually had paranoid or depressive features related in content to the traumatic experience. Examples are reported of PTSD cases showing full symptomatology (intrusive imagery, avoidance behaviour, disordered arousal) in the absence of a single, acute, dramatic trauma of the kind required by the current DSM-III-R definition. Such trauma is thus not a necessary condition for PTSD, and other evidence shows it to be not a sufficient condition. It is suggested that the DSM-III-R Axis IV distinction between acute and enduring psychosocial stressors be incorporated into the definition to distinguish two pathways to stress disorder, post-traumatic (PTSD) and prolonged duress (PDSD). Differen

A number of victims of post traumatic stress disorder, apart from the rest of their symptom constellation, suffer flashbacks. These flashbacks occur during the waking state and frequently are very disabling. From among this group of patients, we have identified a few who demonstrate epileptiform discharge emanating from temporal lobe foci. We have postulated that indeed the flashbacks might represent an amalgam of abnormal neuronal firing along with the expression of a dynamically charged event. Eight cases are documented which illustrate this pattern. In all eight cases, the flashbacks were c

In spite of the difficulties inherent in the study of traumatic stress in disaster victims, the benefit of obtaining more knowledge on the subject is potentially great, especially considering the numbers of individuals affected. Recent estimates of the frequency of world-wide traumatic events have determined that almost two million households annually experience damages and/or injuries from fire, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes alone. The population that is at risk is expected to grow exponentially with our expanding technology, making it even more vital to acquire knowledge to

The residuals of traumatic injuries from home or workplace accidents, automobile accidents, physical assault, or other unintentional human error can affect victims both physically and psychologically. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among survivors of accidents and nonsexual assaults and can impede recovery. Early identification of PTSD and timely referrals to mental health providers can greatly reduce medical expenses, disability payments, lost wages, lost work productivity, and direct mental health costs. A physician-screening tool to identify PTSD is outlined in

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to various alterations within the immune system, yet the metabolic programming of immune cells remains unexplored. In the current exploratory cross-sectional study, we interrogated immunometabolic function by applying cell-specific metabolic flow cytometry, serum biomarker profiling, and targeted gene expression analysis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with PTSD (n = 34) compared with healthy controls (n = 32). PTSD was associated with elevated serum IL-6 (p = 0.005) and higher glycolysis- and oxidative pentose phosphate

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental health disorder, with an incidence of up to 12.5% among primary care patients. Most often, PTSD is detected in combat veterans, victims of terrorist attacks and terror, but it can also be a consequence of traumatic brain injury and medical interventions. Impaired cognitive functioning is a key feature of PTSD, including attention deficits and reduced processing speed, executive dysfunction, and impairments in verbal learning and memory. Cognitive impairments in PTSD are significantly persistent and are largely similar in nature to neurop

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops following the experience of a highly stressful event, which involves a confrontation with death or the threat of death, serious injury or sexual violence. It is characterized by symptoms such as intrusions, avoidance and hypervigilance. According to the literature, PTSD is associated with an imbalance between a privileged memorization of the emotional and sensory aspects of the traumatic event and a failure to memorize the contextual aspects. That is why PTSD is now considered a memory disorder whose effects extend to several co

Humans have lived in a dynamic environment fraught with potential dangers for thousands of years. While fear and stress were crucial for the survival of our ancestors, today, they are mostly considered harmful factors, threatening both our physical and mental health. Trauma is a highly stressful, often life-threatening event or a series of events, such as sexual assault, war, natural disasters, burns, and car accidents. Trauma can cause pathological metaplasticity, leading to long-lasting behavioral changes and impairing an individual's ability to cope with future challenges. If an individual

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental health condition that requires exposure to a traumatic event. This provides unique opportunities for prevention that are not available for other disorders. The aim of this review was to undertake a systematic review and evaluation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of interventions designed to prevent PTSD in adults. Searches involving Cochrane, Embase, Medline, PsycINFO, PILOTS and Pubmed databases were undertaken to identify RCTs of pre-incident preparedness and post-incident interventions until May 2019. Six pre-incident and 69 po

BACKGROUND: Childbirth experience could be complicated and even traumatic. This study explored the possible risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder following childbirth (PTSD-FC) in mothers and partners.
METHODS: Through a cross-sectional online survey biographical, medical, psychological, obstetrical and trauma history data were collected. The PTSD-FC, postnatal depression, social support, and perceived mother-infant bond in 916 mothers and 64 partners were measured through self-reported psychometric assessments.
RESULTS: Our findings highlight the possible impact of several risk fa

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has a high lifetime prevalence and is one of the more serious challenges in mental health care. Fear-conditioned learning involving the amygdala has been thought to be one of the main causative factors; however, recent studies have reported abnormalities in the thalamus of PTSD patients, which may explain the mechanism of interventions such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Therefore, I conducted a miniature literature review on the potential contribution of the thalamus to the pathogenesis of PTSD and the validation of therapeutic a

Overgeneralization (i.e., the transfer of fear to stimuli not related to an aversive event) is part of alterations in associative fear learning in mental disorders. In the present experimental study, we investigated whether this holds true for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood abuse. We expected that fear generalization under experimental conditions reflects generalization of aversive stimuli to different social domains in real life. Sixty-four women with PTSD after childhood abuse and 30 healthy participants (HC) underwent a differential fear conditioning and generali

This review provides an up-to-date summary of the evidence from clinical and epidemiologic studies indicating that persons with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may have an increased risk of coronary heart disease and possibly thromboembolic stroke. Persons with PTSD, a common anxiety disorder in both veteran and nonveteran populations, have been reported to have an increased risk of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Increased activity of the sympathoadrenal axis may contribute to cardiovascular disease through the effects of catecholamines on the heart, v

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is thought to be relatively common following extremely distressing life-threatening events. Patients with liver cirrhosis can experience severe brisk variceal haemorrhage during which they vomit litres of blood and may exsanguinate. We predicted that a significant proportion of survivors would suffer from PTSD.
DESIGN: PTSD assessment of 30 patients who had a haematemesis of more than four units of blood secondary to variceal bleeding and were fully conscious at the time of the bleed.
METHOD: Structured Clinical Diagnostic Interview (SCID-DSM-
