UNLABELLED: The premise of this article is that effective communication should be a central, overarching goal in the treatment of stuttering. Not focusing on communication may have some unintended negative consequences on treatment. The negative consequences are the result of two paradoxes that confront clinicians and clients: the listener paradox and the communication paradox. The listener paradox concerns the different ways that typical listeners and clinicians respond to stuttering. The communication paradox concerns the use of treatment procedures that may have negative consequences on com…

Fluency disorders other than stuttering, which is the major and above all most known form, can be observed and require rehabilitation. Fluency is the quality which enables speech to flow effortlessly with a comfortable delivery, pace and simple transitions. Acquired over a period of several years during childhood, fluency can be altered by numerous neurological syndromes, such as Parkinson's disease, spasmodic dysphonia, or substitution phonations such as the esophageal or tracheoesophageal voice. Their severity is variable and judged above all by the efficacy of communication. Management of t…

The characteristic features of psychogenic stuttering of adult onset are reviewed and four cases of this disorder are presented. Psychogenic stuttering of adult onset is best classified as a conversion reaction, and tentative criteria for this diagnosis are proposed.

INTRODUCTION: Stuttering priapism is a variation of ischemic priapism, generally transient and self-limiting, occurring during sleep and lasting less than 3-4 hours. It may progress to episodes of complete ischemic priapism in approximately one third of cases, necessitating emergent intervention.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: This review aims to provide an up-to-date picture of the pathophysiology and management of stuttering priapism. A search using Medline and EMBASE for relevant publications using the terms "priapism", "stuttering", "diagnosis", "treatment", "fibrosis", was performed.

For some years the dystonias have been the subject of major studies and, as far as the generalised dystonias are concerned, of major therape … r that what is involved is a disorder not of a muscle group, but rather of a function. Consequently stuttering can, in our opinion, be legitimately considered as a dystonia affecting the articulation of speech, within the global context of a new neurological grouping which could be called 'dysfunctional neurology'.

Stuttering is a disturbance in the normal fluency and time patterning of speech. Developmental stuttering (DS), with or without associated psychiatric illness, is the most common form and includes all cases with gradual onset in childhood that are not the result of acquired brain damage. Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) is DS that has not undergone spontaneous or speech-therapy-induced remission. Organic models of DS focus on incomplete lateralization or abnormal cerebral dominance. There is also evidence that DS has a significant genetic component to its cause. Neuroimaging research …

Presently, there are a number of protocols available to assist speech-language pathologists in the identification of early stuttering (Gordon and Luper, 1992). While such protocols offer guidelines for differentiating children who stutter from those who are normally disfluent, the criteria for doing so is frequently based on clinical observation, and often suffers from limited empirical support. The purpose of this paper is to provide an update and "recalibration" of what we currently know to be the salient behaviors of beginning stuttering, and how specific features of these behaviors disting…

A questionnaire designed to assess the prevalence of stuttering and its relation with: (a) central nervous system risk factors; (b) associated disorders (allergies, migraine-type headache, developmental dyslexia history, smoking, and drug abuse), and (c) depression symptoms, was given to a general population sample of 1879 Spanish-speaking university students (mean age = 24.0). A prevalence of 2% of self-reported stuttering was found. Results indicated that the prevalence of minor brain injury or dysfunction, developmental dyslexia history, word-finding difficulties, and depressive symptoms wa…

PURPOSE: Although considerable efforts have been made to investigate the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments for stuttering, little is known about how the stuttering community perceives these treatments. This study aimed to assess and quantify beliefs regarding pharmacotherapy for adults who stutter and to establish whether behavioural intentions to undertake treatment were related to these beliefs.
METHOD: An adapted version of the Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire was completed by adults who stutter. Participants also reported perceptions of their stuttering including its overall…

PURPOSE: To investigate the opinion about stuttering treatments in people who stutter, based on their answers to two open questions.
METHODS: The participants were 40 adults of both genders, with self-reported stuttering. During the first phase of the research, we contacted two Brazilian nongovernmental organizations: the Brazilian Stuttering Association (ABRAGAGUEIRA) and the Brazilian Fluency Institute (IBF). These associations agreed to participate and were responsible for sending the research questions to their members via electronic mail. The first contact with the participants elucidate…

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to explore whether stuttering severity or therapy involvement had an effect on the attitudes that individuals who do not stutter reported towards people who stutter (PWS). Two hundred and sixty (260) university students participated in this study. Direct survey procedures consisting of a 25-item semantic differential scale were utilized. Comparisons of the effects of stuttering severity, level of therapy involvement, and the interaction of these variables were completed. Results suggested that both stuttering severity and therapy involvement had signif…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to use psychological measures of pre-schoolers who stutter and their parents to inform causal theory development and influence clinical practices. This was done using data from a substantive clinical cohort of children who received early stuttering treatment.
METHOD: The cohort (N = 427) comprised parents and their children who were treated with the Lidcombe Program, the Westmead Program, and the Oakville Program. The study incorporated demographic information, stuttering severity, and child and parent psychological measures prior to treatment.
RESULT: …

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between self-reported stuttering severity ratings and educational attainment.
METHOD: Participants were 147 adults seeking treatment for stuttering. At pretreatment assessment, each participant reported the highest educational level they had attained and rated their typical and worst stuttering severity on a 9-point scale for a range of speaking situations. These included: (1) talking with a family member, (2) talking with a familiar person, not a family member, (3) talking in a group of people, (4) talking with a stranger, (5) talking with an…

Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with left inferior frontal structural anomalies. While children often recover, stuttering may also spontaneously disappear much later after years of dysfluency. These rare cases of unassisted recovery in adulthood provide a model of optimal brain repair outside the classical windows of developmental plasticity. Here we explore what distinguishes this type of recovery from less optimal repair modes, i.e. therapy-induced assisted recovery and attempted compensation in subjects who are still affected. We show that persistent stuttering is ass…

The pathophysiology of developmental or acquired stuttering still remains an enigma. In a few cases, the developmental stuttering that had disappeared spontaneously or as a result of therapy reoccurred following a brain lesion. We report on a patient with return of developmental stuttering following a left hemispheric stroke. This case supports the theory that acquired brain lesions may cause a return of stuttering, possibly by interfering with the compensatory mechanism(s) that once had relieved the developmental stuttering.
