Multistep catalytic abiotic CO2 conversion to sugars through C1 intermediates.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) to multicarbon (Cn) upgrading for commodity chemicals, fuel production, or artificial food synthesis using renewable energy input is a golden target for researchers in sustainable carbon emission reduction. Here, we explore and analyze a flexible modular roadmap for the task, utilizing sequential electro-, photo-, and organocatalysis to develop a strategy for CO2 conversion using the key and elusive formaldehyde precursor of interest for sugar generation. We study the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction to methanol in a flow cell and its discontinuous photoox

The Impact and Burden of Dietary Sugars on the Liver.

NAFLD, or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, has increased in prevalence hand in hand with the rise in obesity and increased free sugars in the food supply. The causes of NAFLD are genetic in origin combined with environmental drivers of the disease phenotype. Dietary intake of added sugars has been shown to have a major role in the phenotypic onset and progression of the disease. Simple sugars are key drivers of steatosis, likely through fueling de novo lipogenesis, the conversion of excess carbohydrates into fatty acids, but also appear to upregulate lipogenic metaboli…

Simple and Complex Sugars in Parkinson's Disease: a Bittersweet Taste.

Neuronal homeostasis depends on both simple and complex sugars (the glycoconjugates), and derangement of their metabolism is liable to impair neural function and lead to neurodegeneration. Glucose levels boost glycation phenomena, a wide series of non-enzymatic reactions that give rise to various intermediates and end-products that are potentially dangerous in neurons. Glycoconjugates, including glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycosaminoglycans, contribute to the constitution of the unique features of neuron membranes and extracellular matrix in the nervous system. Glycosylation defects are i…

Sugars in children's diets: current sources, determinants and health impacts.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes current evidence on free sugar intake among European children and adolescents, emphasizing recent trends in consumption, key determinants, associated health outcomes, and implications for preventive strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite modest reductions in some countries, sugar consumption in youth continues to exceed international recommendations, particularly during adolescence. Longitudinal studies highlight persistent high intakes, with sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and confectionery as primary contributors. Socioeconomic disparities, parental

Sugars as Central Integrators of Plant Immunity and Stress Responses.

Sugars are fundamental metabolites that sustain plant growth and development, but accumulating evidence demonstrates that they also function as regulatory hubs in plant defence. In this review, we synthesise current knowledge on how carbohydrate dynamics coordinate metabolism, signalling, and structural responses to shape plant resistance against both pathogens and herbivores. We highlight how spatial and temporal regulation of sugar transport, mediated by SWEET, SUT/SUC, and STP transporters, controls carbon availability at plant-heterotroph interfaces, while sucrose-cleaving enzymes such as …

Thiophosphate photochemistry enables prebiotic access to sugars and terpenoid precursors.

Over the past few years, evidence has accrued that demonstrates that terrestrial photochemical reactions could have provided numerous (proto … accessed from hydrogen cyanide through a Kiliani-Fischer-type process without progressing to higher sugars. We also demonstrate that thiophosphate allows photochemical reductive aminations, and that thiophosphate chemistry allows a plausible prebiotic synthesis of the C5 moieties used in extant terpene and terpenoid biosynthesis, namely dimethylallyl alc …

High concentration of sugars is genotoxic to folate-deficient cells.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with an elevated, but poorly understood baseline of genomic instability (GIN). Expert panels are still debating on whether hyperglycemia is the key element in conferring this high GIN. Since high blood glucose and low blood folate are prevalent in T2DM, we hypothesized that high glucose may work with low folate to induce GIN. Using NCM460, CCD841 and L02 cell lines as in vitro cell models, we investigated the genotoxic effects of high sugars (HS; 1-2% glucose, fructose, galactose or sucrose) alone or in combination with folate defici…

Sugar, Spice, and Bleeding.

Brodifacoum (BDF), otherwise known as superwarfarin, is a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide (LAAR) which acts as a vitamin K antagonist. Much like warfarin, BDF's mechanism of action is to irreversibly inhibit the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase, thus reducing the recycling of vitamin K and, therefore, reducing the activation of clotting factors two, seven, nine, and 10. Although BDF is usually found in rodenticides, it has been recently used as an additive in synthetic cannabinoids. We present a case of a young male with a history of synthetic cannabinoid use who presented with hematur

Sugar and the Mosaic of Autoimmunity.

BACKGROUND Recent discoveries in the field of immunometabolism, and on the role of the serine-threonine kinase mTOR as a sensor of nutrients, integrator of cellular signaling pathways, and regulator of metabolism, have widened our understanding of the connection between nutrition, health, and diseases. Epidemiological studies have shown that higher sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is associated with increased risk of developing chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis and to wors

Sugar metabolism by Brucellae.

The metabolic capabilities of the species of Brucella were originally of interest as a means of distinguishing them from each other and from other genera. Certain unusual characteristics, especially erythritol utilization, were studied in the hopes they would shed light on the pathogenicity. With the advent of modern genetic methods and genomic sequencing, it is now possible to get a good idea of the total capabilities of the organism and to do tests to confirm these deductions. Brucella appears to be a fairly normal member of the alpha-proteobacteria, but with some differences. A few question
