The use of sunscreens is recommended to limit the impact of sun exposure on the skin. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between sunscreen sales and melanoma in 4 different countries with diverse sunscreen regulations. Data from publicly avail-able databases were examined for Sweden, England, Australia, and the USA from 1999 to 2018. The association between incidence of melanoma and sunscreen sales was estimated using a generalized estimating equation, and modelling was used to predict melanoma cases. Incidence of melanoma was positively associated with sunscreen sales

Sunscreens are topical preparations containing any number of ultraviolet filters (UVFs). The first part of the review will focus on the recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations of 2019 and general use of these agents. While sunscreen products are becoming more regulated in the United States, we still lag behind other countries in our options for UVFs. Sun protection to prevent skin cancer and aging changes should be a combination of sun avoidance, protective structures, and clothing as well as use of sunscreen products. Newer and safer products are needed to help supplement and re

Total cumulative sun exposure is associated with the development of squamous cell and basal cell cancers, whereas intense intermittent sun exposure is associated with the development of melanoma. Exposure to UV radiation is the only known modifiable cause of melanoma, but the role of sunscreen in melanoma prevention remains somewhat controversial. This article discusses how UV radiation contributes to the pathogenesis of melanoma, how sunscreen modulates the action of UV radiation on the skin, and the effect of sunscreen on the risk of developing melanoma. A review of available sunscreen agent

Sunscreens have been around for more than 70 years. Designed originally to protect against sunburn, recognition of the various harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation has broadened the use of sunscreens. The addition of effective UVA sunscreen agents has enabled claims beyond protection against sunburn to include prevention of idiopathic photodermatosis, actinic keratoses, skin cancer, and photoaging. This article will review some of the recent advances in photoprotection, including the development of sunscreen formulations offering higher and broader protection against solar radiation.

A sunscreen offers indispensable skin protection against UV damage and related skin diseases. However, due to the poor interfacial stability of sunscreen coatings on the skin, the synthetic ingredients in sunscreen creams easily fall off and enter aquatic environments, causing large ecological hazards and skin protection failure. Herein, we tackle this issue by introducing amyloid-like protein aggregates into a sunscreen to noticeably enhance the interfacial robustness of sunscreen coatings on the skin. The synthesis of such an agent to suppress sunscreen leakage can be achieved by manipulatin

Photodermatoses are a group of skin conditions associated with an abnormal reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. There are several of the photosensitive rashes which mainly affect the UV exposed areas of the skin. It can be classified into four groups: immunology mediated photodermatoses, chemical and drug induced photosensitivity, photoaggravated dermatoses, and genetic disorders. A systematic approach including history, physical examination, phototesting, photopatch testing, and laboratory tests are important in diagnosis of a photodermatosis patient. In order to optimally treat a disease

Sunscreens block the absorption of the sunlight spectrum responsible for the cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D (ultraviolet B). The present study was prompted by our observation of suppression of cutaneous vitamin D formation by a single application of sunscreening agents. We measured the index of vitamin D body store, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) level, in 20 long-term users of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and in 20 controls matched by age and exposure to sunlight. Serum 25-OH-D levels were significantly lower among long-term PABA users than among normal controls: 40.2 +/- 3.2 vs 91.3 +/-…

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of contact allergy and photocontact allergy to sunscreens. A consecutive series of 54 patients with suspected clinical photosensitivity were assessed. All had the same standardized photobiological investigation from January 1989 to December 1990, including patch tests and photopatch tests with 6 sunscreen agents. Oxybenzone was found to cause 4 cases of allergic contact dermatitis (with photoaggravation in 2), and 3 cases of photocontact dermatitis (13% of patients). This is probably due to the wide distribution of oxybenzone in sunscree

A 6-year-old girl with xeroderma pigmentosum was contact and photocontact sensitized to PABA which had been used as a sunscreening agent. The activating wavelengths for photocontact dermatitis were in long-wave ultraviolet light. The experimental photocontact sensitization was not induced in guinea pigs. Although PABA is the most effective and harmless sunscreening agent for normal skin, it could induce photocontact sensitivity especially in diseased or damaged skin.

We have applied a PCR-based methodology to study the DNA damage induced by UV-A, UV-B and sunlight itself. Our results, employing a cell-free system, indicate that UV-B (310 nm) is approximately 30-fold more potent at inhibiting DNA synthesis than UV-A (365 nm). We were also able to show that 20 min of sunlight exposure on a summer day induced DNA damage capable of inhibiting DNA synthesis. Hence, this methodology has a sensitivity suitable to detect biologically relevant doses of UV light. In addition, we propose that this technique may be suitable to assess the relative photoprotection of co

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is one of the commonest malignancies occurred on sun-exposed skin, mainly by UV-B radiation, of lighter-skinned individuals. The aim of the present study was to develop advanced drug delivery formulations used in BCC therapy that overcomes chemotherapy-induced side-effects of skin photosensitivity by an integrative approach of nanoencapsulation in conjunction with combination therapy that uses chemotherapeutic, chemoprotective and sunscreen agents. The combination of anticancer drug together with sunscreen agent is very useful in therapy, especially for individuals w

The aim of the present study was to objectively quantify and predict bioavailability of three sunscreen agents (i.e., benzophenone-3, 2-ethylhexylsalicylate, and 2 ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate) in epidermis treated by petrolatum and emulsion-based formulations for 7 and 30min on four human volunteers. Profiles of sunscreen agents through stratum corneum (SC), derived from the assessment of chemical amounts in SC layers collected by successive adhesive tape-stripping, were successfully fitted to Fick's second law of diffusion. Therefore, permeability coefficients of sunscreen agents were found

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses of observational case-control studies have demonstrated no association between sunscreen use and the development of malignant melanoma.
OBJECTIVES: To postulate whether modern sunscreens are likely to be effective as a preventative agent in melanoma and, if so, how many cases might be avoided by their use.
METHODS: The potential number of melanomas prevented by encouraging the use of modern, high SPF, broad spectrum sunscreens during recreational summer exposure was estimated by combining the prevalence of their use with the relative risk of melanoma in nonusers com

It is well established that sun exposure is the main cause for the development of skin cancer. Chronic continuous UV radiation is believed to induce malignant melanoma, whereas intermittent high-dose UV exposure contributes to the occurrence of actinic keratosis as precursor lesions of squamous cell carcinoma as well as basal cell carcinoma. Not only photocarcinogenesis but also the mechanisms of photoaging have recently become apparent. In this respect the use of sunscreens seemed to prove to be more and more important and popular within the last decades. However, there is still inconsistency

Skin cancer is an ever-expanding global health issue. UV radiation is the main etiological agent of most types of skin cancer. Photoprotection is critical to in skin cancer prevention. Sunscreens and physical barriers are the two primary photoprotective measures. This review summarizes current options in photoprotection, including physical barrier such as shade and clothing as well as sunscreens. In addition we look at how these photoprotective measures have influenced skin cancer rates and what can be done to improve the efficacy of existing photoprotective agents and devices.

Sunscreens provide excellent protection against erythema and against chronic damage such as photoaging and skin cancer. Today's challenges concern safety of the products and improved methods for standardizing the evaluation of their efficacy. Other important topics are the further development of sunscreen products, as well as personalization of use. Personalized sun protection based on the phenotype, the genetic profiles and moreover the skin's microbiome - all linked to the identification of certain consumer susceptibility factors - is an exciting new area of research. In particular, the expa

The case of a 42-year-old woman with sunlight-provoked eczematous eruptions recurrent over several years is reported. Photopatch-testing with cosmetic products and sunscreen preparations used by the patient as well as the active ingredient of the sunscreen formulations revealed photosensitivity to the UV-blocking agent 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone. The active wavelengths were shown to be in the UV-A range.

Sunscreens reduce the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) by reflecting, absorbing or scattering photons. UVR comprises ultraviolet-B (UVB), which plays a major role in sunburn and the development of skin cancers, and ultraviolet-A (UVA), which contributes to photoaging and skin damage. The application of sunscreen is among the most effective approaches to mitigating UV-induced damage. As a topical photoprotective agent, it can be classified as either inorganic (physical blockers) or organic (chemical absorbers). Physical sunscreens are particularly beneficial for people who are hyp
