ScholarGPT's performance in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of Scholar GPT in answering technical questions in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery and to conduct a comparative analysis with the results of a previous study that assessed the performance of ChatGPT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scholar GPT was accessed via ChatGPT (www.chatgpt.com) on March 20, 2024. A total of 60 technical questions (15 each on impacted teeth, dental implants, temporomandibular joint disorders, and orthognathic surgery) from our previous study were used. Scholar GPT's responses were evaluated using a

Global Anesthesia in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial procedures during volunteer surgical missions requires careful planning of personnel, equipment, supplies, and coordination with the host medical institution. Cleft lip and palate repair are the most common oral and maxillofacial surgeries performed, and can be performed safely in low-resource environments when proper care and planning is taken.

Pain measurement in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Regardless of whether it is acute or chronic, the assessment of pain should be simple and practical. Since the intensity of pain is thought to be one of the primary factors that determine its effect on a human's overall function and sense, there are many scales to assess pain. The aim of the current article was to review pain intensity scales that are commonly used in dental and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). Previous studies demonstrated that multidimensional scales, such as the McGill Pain Questionnaire, Short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, and Wisconsin Brief Pain Questionna

Oral and maxillofacial surgery in dogs and cats.

Advancements in diagnostic and treatment modalities for oral and maxillofacial surgery have allowed veterinarians to offer clients a range of alternatives for their pets. Categories of oral and maxillofacial surgery reviewed in this article include jaw fracture management, management of palatal/oronasal defects, recognition and treatment of oral masses, and management of several miscellaneous pathologic conditions. Miscellaneous oral lesions discussed in this article include odontogenic cysts, osteonecrosis and osteomyelitis, and lesions of the tongue and lips.

Osteonecrosis and bisphosphonates in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Bisphosphonates are a class of compounds approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma, hypercalcemia of malignancy, osteolytic lesions of metastatic disease, Paget's disease, and most commonly, osteoporosis. Recently, these drugs have been associated with a new clinical entity, bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis (BRON) which is characterized by jaw necrosis that typically presents following dentoalveolar surgery. The pathogenesis for this complication appears to related to bisphosphonate mediated inhibition of osteoclast function and normal bone remodeling. This complication can have a sig

New method of sedation in oral surgery.

Local anesthesia, the well-known method of sedation, usually is insufficient for dental implantation and the augmentation of the alveolar ridge, because the operations last for 1 to 2 hours and patients may experience fear and strain. This article examines a new complex sedation method using ketorolac, midazolam, and a local anesthetic 4% solution of articaine hydrochloride and epinephrine (Septanest) in combination with a vasoconstrictor. This method was applied to 67 patients operated on for dental implantation with screw implants or for the alveolar ridge augmentation with biocompatible mat

Regional anesthesia for dentistry and oral surgery.

Pain is a perception that results from activation of a specific set of receptors by noxious stimuli. Processing by the central nervous system results in the stimulus to be perceived as pain. Thermal receptors respond to temperature changes, mechanoreceptors respond to pressure, tension, stretch, and chemoreceptors respond to substances released during the inflammatory process such as prostaglandins, histamine, serotonin, and bradykinin. The current standard of veterinary medical practice is adequate pain management for all patients. Regional anesthesia is one component of overall pain manageme

[TMJ diagnosis in oral and maxillofacial surgery].

Recording pathologic mandibular movements is of crucial importance to the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders of the masticatory system. The electronic computersupported recording system presented in this paper is a diagnostic instrument of extremely high precision. The clinical and scientific applications possible with this system in oral and maxillofacial surgery are discussed.

Direct oral anticoagulant use in oral surgery: insights from a systematic review.

PURPOSE: The increasing use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients undergoing oral surgery highlights the need for well-defined, evidence-based recommendations on perioperative and postoperative bleeding management. This review aims to evaluate bleeding risks and strategies to optimize the management of patients treated with DOACs undergoing oral surgical procedures. METHODS: A systematic review identified 628 articles, of which 17 met the inclusion criteria. These studies focused exclusively on patients treated with DOACs-Dabigatran, Rivaroxaban, Apixaban, and Edoxaban-undergoing

Achalasia: Surgery Versus Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy.

Approaches to achalasia include non-operative and operative techniques with Heller Myotomy and Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) at the forefront of palliative strategies. Given the diverse subtypes and the time-dependent failure pattern for achalasia, there is no standard approach. We elect for a POEM for type III achalasia, poor functional status, hostile abdomen, and salvage after the previous myotomy. A Heller myotomy is elected over a POEM for type II achalasia, presence of diverticulum, and hiatal hernia. As long-term outcomes become available, an optimal customized strategy will become

Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Advances in technology and specialized instrumentation allow surgeons to study, refine, and modify minimally invasive surgery (MIS) to replace standard operations. This has occurred across many surgical specialties. The benefits of MIS include less swelling, less pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to daily activities. Oral and maxillofacial endoscopic techniques are used for access to the ramus condyle unit, maxillary sinus, zygoma, orbit, temporomandibular joint, and salivary ductal system. Although endoscopic techniques are also used in facial cosmetic surgery, this discussion fo

Oral benzodiazepine premedication in minor gynaecological surgery.

Clobazam 20 mg, diazepam 10 mg, lorazepam 2 mg and oxazepam 30 mg were compared in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial as oral premedication for 150 patients undergoing minor gynaecological surgery. All drugs and placebo significantly decreased anxiety when assessed by the patient on a 10-cm linear analogue rating scale 60 min after premedication. Diazepam 10 mg induced significantly more drowsiness when assessed by a trained observer 60 min after premedication than clobazam 20 mg, oxazepam 30 mg and placebo (P less than 0.01). Lorazepam 2 mg caused significantly more drowsine
