Autoimmune thyroiditis occurs as organ specific autoimmune disease not only as an isolated impairment of thyroid gland, but also linked to many autoimmune endocrinopathies. Genetic predisposition in the area of HLA antigens was followed up by patients with autoimmune thyroiditis diagnosed in this way and it appeared that genetic predisposition in isolated autoimmune thyroiditis is different when compared to the occurrence linked to endocrine polyglandular disease. This study was performed on a lot of 51 patients and intends to correlate the autoimmune thyroiditis to the synthesis of Th1 cytokines and to the activation of T lymphocytes. We find out that CD25, an activation marker of T lymphocytes, is significantly increased in these patients. Glucose tolerance tests were carried out on fifty patients with autoimmune thyroiditis of varying duration and severity. Two were floridly diabetic, and a further six showed diabetic abnormalities of glucose tolerance, giving an over-all incidence of 16 per cent. Diabetics were significantly older than nondiabetics, but the two groups did not differ in terms of duration of thyroid disease or frequency of associated disease of probable autoimmune origin. The prevalence of diabetes in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis appears to be the same as that in the population generally.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is marked by self-tissue destruction as a consequence of an alteration in the adaptive immune response that entails the evasion of immune regulation.
