BACKGROUND: Different tick-borne infections can cause an acute febrile illness. The study objectives were to investigate the clinical manifestations and diagnosis of infections among patients who presented with fever after a tick-bite, and to detect newly described pathogens, including Ehrlichia, Babesia and Rickettsia helvetica, in North-Eastern Switzerland.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: : We studied 75 patients (41 male, 34 female, median age 38 years, among them 10 children) who had fever within 3 weeks after a tick-bite. Paired sera were tested for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi, tick-borne e

PURPOSE: Pastoralists regularly come in contact with ticks as they herd their animals and are exposed to pathogens that cause zoonotic disea … e ability of ticks to transmit zoonotic pathogens. Preventive practices were insufficient to reduce tick bites, and thus were constantly exposed to tick-borne diseases. This study hopes to provide important insights for the development of educational awareness programmes for the pastoralists and serve as a guide for the health workers in designing future pre …

BACKGROUND: In areas of endemic disease, the probability of Lyme disease after a tick bite ranges from about 0.012 to 0.05. Early treatment … s the probability of infection falls below 0.01.
CONCLUSIONS: Empirical treatment of patients with tick bites is indicated when the probability of B. burgdorferi infection after a bite is 0.036 or higher, and this treatment may be preferred when the probability of infection ranges from 0.01 to 0.035. When the probability of infection after a tick bite is le …

We report a case of human tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in which the TBE virus was isolated from the biting tick. Viral growth and sequence were characterized and compared with those of a reference strain. Virus isolation from ticks from patients with TBE may offer a new approach for studies of epidemiology and pathogenicity.

Analysis of 846 epidemiological charts of unvaccinated tick-borne encephalitis patients in the period of 1956-1985 established that in 21% cases the disease resulted from multiple bites of the ticks, in 67.3% it occurred from single bites. In 11.7% of the patients, the bite was denied. Single infecting bites were mostly those of the head and neck (39.2% cases), especially frequent among children (84.9%). The upper part of the body and hands were bitten less frequently (16.7 and 12.5%, respectively). Other sites of the bite were reported in 6-10%. The most complicated pattern of tick-borne ence

Tick attachment duration was estimated in all ticks collected during this study (n=261). Twenty-six per cent of Mongolians live pastoral lifestyles, increasing their likelihood of exposure to ticks and placing them at a higher risk for contracting tick-borne diseases (TBDs). Anaplasma spp. and Rickettsia spp. have been identified in ticks, livestock and humans in Mongolia, but no known qualitative research has been conducted investigating the association between nomadic herder characteristics, tick bite history and exposure to TBDs. To better understand the association between self-reported tick bites and symptoms versus actual exposure to TBDs, this study paired serological data …

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases are the most prevalent vector-borne diseases in Europe. Knowledge on the incidence and clinical presentation of other tick-borne diseases than Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis is minimal, despite the high human exposure to these pathogens through tick bites. Using molecular detection techniques, the frequency of tick-borne infections after exposure through tick bites was estimated.
METHODS: Ticks, blood samples and questionnaires on health status were collected from patients that visited their general practitioner with a tick bite or erythema migran…

No reactive histological changes of the dermis and no cement cone formation were observed at the insertion site of tick mouthparts by feeding of H. inermis larvae. Conversely, cement formation was observed by feeding of H. inermis female. Fully fed D. marginatus larvae on viraemic mice showed bright fluorescence in oesophagus, suboesophageal ganglion, salivary glands, a few gut cells and in lumen of Malpighian tubuli. We consider the penetration of virus from oesophagus to suboesophageal ganglion as the possible route of primary virus infection. Sections through the D. reticulatus nymphs durin

No distinct internal cement formation was observed at the penetration site of the mouth parts of Ixodes ricinus females during their feeding on golden hamsters. At 2 h, the chelicera were already deeply inserted into the dermal tissue. Beginning after 4 hours, the proliferation of collagen and conus formation became evident. The internal cell-free area was structureless and showed PAS positivity, while the outer collagen layer was rich in fibrocytes and negative for PAS staining. Both layers showed positivity when stained for collagen. The conus extending into the subdermal connective tissue w

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a 60-year-old male who was hospitalized with fever, headache, fatigue, nausea, and myalgia for six days. … terial species were isolated, suggesting that the patient was not infected with C. burnetii through tick bites. Further investigation is required to identify the carriers or transmitters of the infection.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative organism of Lyme disease, has been linked to the development of scleroatrophic skin conditions including morphea, although this association remains controversial. The possibility that tick bite with or without concurrent Borrelia infection instigates that morphea development is important to recognize because this could prompt further workup for Lyme disease, or other tick-borne illness, which, when untreated, can have devastating consequences. Here, we report a case of a woman with a history of previous tick bite in the location of morphea. This prompted fur

Tick bite is known as a possible cause of some infectious diseases such as Lyme disease, spotted fever and related illnesses. The reaction to a tick bite may persist for several months to several years and can sometimes cause histopathological granuloma. The long-term reaction to salivary extracts from the tick could be responsible for development of granuloma in our patient. We recommended complete resection as the only sure way to treat formed granuloma.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by infected ticks. The transmission depends on several factors, especially on the duration of the tick's presence in the host body (the nymph which is smaller than the adults and thus less visible, is in this case the most frequently involved) and on whether the tick is infected or not. The interpretation of results in the few available studies is made difficult by the lack of information obtained (due to difficulty to collect information and examination costs). The comparison is made even more difficult

African tick bite fever is caused by Rickettsia africae, a newly recognized species from South Africa. We report the case of a patient with an unusual site of a tick bite and discuss cutaneous differences from other spotted fevers that may help dermatologists with clinical diagnosis.
