Twin polymerization was used to prepare composite materials composed of SnO2 nanoparticles entrapped in a polymer matrix. Experimental studies over the last decade have suggested an association between thymus immune and homeostatic function and exogenous tin. It has been hypothesized that the thymus gland synthesizes and secretes one or more tin bearing factors that enhance immune defenses against malignancy and retard the gradual loss of immune capacity with senescence. This review conciliates data from several divergent areas of research in order to explore the rationale for the above concepts.

The chemical and biological methylation of tin under environmental conditions is reviewed. The question of whether methyltin species form in situ in the environment is also considered. Analytical approaches using hydridization techniques give quite sensitive results. Incubation studies of environmental microorganisms and sediment have demonstrated the formation of methyltin species, and similar conversions have been observed with chemical methylating agents such as methyl cobalamin and methyl iodide.

Mixed inoculums of microorganisms from Chesapeake Bay sediments transformed inorganic tin (SnCl(4) . 5H(2)O) to organotin compounds. Dimethyltin and trimethyltin species were identified as products by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Methylated tin species were not observed in sterile controls or in poisoned controls. Thus, estuarine microorganisms have the potential for transforming tin to toxic organotins and for mobilizing tin in the ecosystem.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a technologically important semiconductor. An increasing number of cases of severe lung effects (characterized by pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and/or interstitial fibrosis) in ITO-exposed workers warrants a review of the toxicological hazards. Short- and long-term inhalation studies in rats and mice revealed persistent alveolar proteinosis, inflammation and fibrosis in the lungs down to concentrations as low as 0.01mg/m(3). Organotin compounds have been studied for their biological properties, whereas very little is known about the effects of tin-inorganic derivatives on biological systems. Owing to our interest in the dithiocarbamate moiety in relation to metal redistribution in the body and to its biological import, we performed in vitro cytotoxicity experiments on dithiocarbamates. Preliminary results obtained with five tin-dithiocarbamates, where DDTC is the diethyldithiocarbamate anion, indicate some very promising compounds.

The stability of tin-phytate solution stored at room temperature has been studied. It was found that there is a pronounced increase in the rate of degradation of this complex, both temperature and phase change contributing to the enhanced rate of decomposition. The kidney uptake which is occasionally observed clinically with an aged tin-phytate complex labelled with 99mTc is probably due to an intermediate product which subsequently breaks down on further storage. Lyophilized tin-phytate complex 'kits' have a longer shelf life than the aqueous complex.

This study compared the tensile bond strengths of two base metal alloys and two noble metal alloys, tin-plated and non-tin-plated, with an adhesive resinous cement. Two tin platers were compared for their effectiveness in enhancing the composite resin-to-metal bond.
