The authors describe two cases of tinea capitis in adults, one due to Microsporum canis and the other to Trichophyton rubrum. The atypical clinical presentation of the dermatophytosis in these two cases is stressed. It is hypothesized that in both cases the disease spread from primary lesion on the face.

A school survey of Tinea capitis in Benghazi revealed an incidence of 4.49 per cent. The commonest clinical type which accounted for 87.7 per cent of the cases, resembled Seborrhoea capitis more than with any classical type described so far. T. schoenleinii and T. violaeceum were the most frequent isolates.

Tinea capitis is a dermatophyte scalp infection with a marked prevalence among the pediatric population. However, in the last few years, its epidemiology has changed due to increasing population migration worldwide. Host-specific and environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis of tinea capitis. Clinically, tinea capitis may present as a subtle hair loss accompanied by scalp scaling, alopecia with scaly patches, or alopecia with black dots. A more severe form of tinea capitis is represented by kerion celsi, which clinically presents as a tender plaque covered by pustules and crusts. If

The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological characteristics and pathogen spectrum of tinea capitis in Guangxi, southern China. A multicenter prospective descriptive study was conducted in 8 hospitals across Guangxi. From January 2019 to July 2022, one hundred seventy-one (171) patients diagnosed with tinea capitis were included. Demographic data, risk factors, and fungal data were collected. If necessary, species were further identified by morphological or molecular sequencing in the central laboratory. Of the 171 cases of tinea capitis, 74.3% occurred in patients aged 2-8 years.

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection in Israel, most commonly caused by the dermatophyte Trichophyton tonsurans.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of oral antifungal monotherapy in producing clinical or complete cure. We also evaluated the impact of topical therapy (bifonazole 1% shampoo and/or betamethasone valerate 0.1% solution), prior to oral treatment, on patients' likelihood of clinical or complete cure.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted. Patients with mycologically confirmed tinea capitis were treated with one of four regimens: (1) terbin

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a common contagious fungal infection of the scalp in children. Systemic therapy is required for treatment and to prevent spread. This is an update of the original Cochrane review.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of systemic antifungal drugs for tinea capitis in children.
SEARCH METHODS: We updated our searches of the following databases to November 2015: the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register, CENTRAL (2015, Issue 10), MEDLINE (from 1946), EMBASE (from 1974), LILACS (from 1982), and CINAHL (from 1981). We searched five trial registers and checked the refe

"Black dot" tinea capitis is a common cause of alopecia in young patients. It is most commonly caused by a dermatophyte infection with Trichophyton tonsurans. This entity can be easily distinguished from alopecia areata with the use of hair/scalp dermoscopy. The use of oral terbinafine is effective in resolving the infection.

Superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes (dermatophytoses) are the most common skin infections with about 10-15% of the population throughout the world being affected. Up to now the occurrence of fungal infections of the skin has been connected, like ectoparasitic infections with poor hygiene and poor living conditions. During the last decades, however, there has been a dramatic change with a significant increase in mycotic scalp infections as well as fungal nail disease mainly in highly developed countries like the US and those on the European continent.

A total of 1568 patients with suspected tinea capitis were examined for causative fungal agents between 1994 and 2001. Laboratory examination confirmed tinea capitis in 209 patients. Males were affected more frequently (67.5%) than females (32.5%) and in both sexes, those who were 3-11 years old, were more infected. Trichophyton violaceum was the most common aetiological agent (37.3%) followed by Trichophyton schoenleinii (21.5%), Microsporum canis (18.6%), Trichophyton verrocosum (14.8%), Trichophyton tonsurans (5.3%), Trichophyton rubrum (1%), Microsporum gypseum (1%) and Trichophyton mentag

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is the most common type of dermatophytosis in children, but is uncommon in the first year of life.
OBJECTIVES: To review clinical, mycological and epidemiological data in a series of 10 infants aged under 1 year diagnosed as having tinea capitis in three Spanish hospitals between 1998 and 2002.
METHODS: A retrospective case note study.
RESULTS: There were six boys and four girls with a mean of age 7 months (range 1.5-12). All the children were born in Spain, but in five cases the parents were immigrants from Africa. In these cases the isolated dermatophytes were tw

We describe an outbreak of tinea capitis in a kindergarten. Individuals with relation to the institution were examined clinically and mycologically (n = 98). Microsporum audouinii was cultured from 12 people, out of whom eight patients had tinea capitis and seven patients had tinea corporis. Three patients had both tinea capitis and tinea corporis. The problems with spread of anthropophilic infections and the difficulties with treatment of Microsporum dermatophytes are discussed.

A school survey of 4461 primary-school children was carried out. The epidemiological, clinical and mycological features of tinea capitis were recorded. Of 204 clinically diagnosed cases, mycological examination of hair and scalp scrapings gave positive results in 120, a prevalence of 2.7%. Of these 120, 56 were from urban schools and 64 from rural schools. The male to female ratio was 2:1. The prevalence of tinea capitis was higher in children with a low socioeconomic profile, i.e. low standard of living, poor hygiene, low level of parental education and overcrowded living conditions. X-Rays were discovered by Roentgen in 1895 and were subsequently used in the treatment of many ailments. Numerous benign skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis have historically been treated with X-rays. During the 1930s and 1940s radiotherapy was introduced as an effective treatment for scalp ringworm (tinea capitis). Over the past few years radio-induced malignancies have been reported, with basal cell carcinoma predominating. We report a very rare case of a 64-year-old male with a 9.5mm Breslow thickness melanoma occurring over 50 years following irradiation. This case highlights th

Tinea capitis mimicking dissecting cellulitis is a rare presentation, and there is a paucity of information regarding this presentation in the literature. Three children 10-14 years of age who presented with an unusual clinical manifestation of tinea capitis that clinically resembled dissecting cellulitis are reported. The patients were treated with systemic antifungals for 3-4 months. Treatment success was measured according to repeat fungal cultures and clinical assessment of hair regrowth at follow-up visits. All three patients had resolution of infection, with negative repeat fungal cultur

Inflammatory tinea capitis is the result of a hypersensitivity reaction to a dermatophytic infection. The usual forms are favus, kerion celsi, dermatophytic Majocchi granuloma, and mycetoma. Inflammatory tinea capitis can be caused by Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T tonsurans, T rubrum, and M gypseum. Histopathologic findings include a spectrum from mild suppurative folliculitis to dense granulomatous infiltrates. In mycetoma, grains must be present.
