Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) often presents with cervical lymph node metastases and at times the primary tumor cannot be identified despite extensive workup. Lymphoma is the second most common neoplasm in the head and neck region but is seldom synchronous with HNSCC and rarely involves regional mucosal sites. We report herein a rare occurrence of tonsillar involvement by small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL) incidentally detected during the workup for a cervical lymph node SCC metastasis of a 52-year-old non-smoker male. The microscopic human papillomavirus-positive SCC involving t

BACKGROUND: The lymphoma is the most common childhood malignancy in the head and neck. Approximately 15% of head and neck lymphomas in children affect the Waldeyer's ring. Early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance in the prognosis of tonsillar lymphoma patients.
OBJECTIVES: To realize a systematic review of the literature on the clinical manifestations present at diagnosis of tonsillar lymphoma in pediatric patients.
DATE SOURCE: Articles in English, Spanish or Portuguese in the last 15 years about lymphoma in palatine tonsil in children from PubMed/Medline, LILACS, IBECS, Cochra

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma represents a morphologic spectrum of neoplasms localized to the nasopharynx and arising from nasopharyngeal epithelium. Nasopharyngeal carcinomas have rather unique clinical, epidemiologic, pathologic, and biologic features. The morphologic spectrum of nasopharyngeal carcinoma includes keratinizing, nonkeratinizing, and undifferentiated subtypes. The separation of these morphologic types is not an academic exercise, but has practical importance relative to differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis. A similar morphologic classification applies to carcinomas aris

OBJECTIVES: Tonsils are uncommonly affected by granulomatous inflammation, often with an obscure cause. This study attempts to elucidate the nature of tonsillar granulomatous inflammation.
DESIGN: Retrospective clinicopathologic review.
METHODS: Twenty-two cases of tonsillar granulomas diagnosed between 1940 and 1999 were retrieved from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. H&E slides and a series of histochemical stains were reviewed, and patient follow-up was obtained.
RESULTS: There were 11 males and 11 females, aged 7 to 64 years (mean, 29.9 y). Most of the cases present

A 70-year-old man presented with gradually worsening throat discomfort. He had no prior diagnosis of cancer and no travel history of note. Examination revealed a right-sided painless neck lump. He underwent an MRI of the neck, revealing a gadolinium-enhancing tonsillar mass and two brain lesions. Biopsy of the tonsil lesion was in keeping with an epithelial neoplasm, suggesting metastatic renal cell carcinoma. This was confirmed following a staging CT, which revealed a left renal mass and lung metastases. Due to his brain metastases, the patient has been started on the tyrosine kinase inhibito

Neoplasms of retromolar trigone have important peculiarities due to their spatial relationships with the surrounding structures. Tumours that involve this area can extend to nearby muscles; adipose spaces; and other anatomic structures, such as the soft palate, the tonsillar fossa, the parapharyngeal space, and the floor of the mouth. In spite of a relatively quick diagnosis, the real extent of these tumours is typically underestimated at clinical examination. Our purpose was to propose a systematic approach to the use of multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions to evaluate normal retro

OBJECTIVES: The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a potentially malignant spindle cell neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that was originally described as a thoracic lesion originating from pleural tissue. Recently, numerous extrapleural sites of origin have been described, frequently affecting the head and neck region. The purpose of this article is to focus on a formerly underestimated neoplasm and to highlight its appearance in the head and neck region.
METHODS: The authors present 2 illustrative cases, including what is probably the first reported case of an SFT arising in the human tonsillar f

Spontaneous tonsillar hemorrhage (STH) of non-iatrogenic causes occurs most frequently from infection. Infection can lead to erosion into a major vessel, such as the carotid artery or a smaller peripheral tonsil vessel. Whereas fatal erosion into a major vessel from a deep neck abscess was relatively common in the past, it is rare since the advent of antibiotics. Spontaneous tonsillar hemorrhage, when it does occur, appears to occur most commonly in a peripheral tonsil vessel from bacterial tonsillitis. Medical records of 860 patients with conditions considered to be susceptible to STH were re

Oncocytic neoplasms comprise a group of rare tumors of salivary glands. Histologically, World Health Organization (WHO) (1991) classified them into three distinct types: Oncocytosis, oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytoma is also known by the more descriptive and less confusing terms of oxyphilic adenoma and oxyphilic granular cell adenoma. Oncocytoma is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm composed of large epithelial cells with characteristic bright eosinophilic granular cytoplasm (oncocytic cells). It accounts for approximately 0.4-1% of all salivary gland neoplasms, occurring prim

Schwannomas can originate in any peripheral, autonomic, or cranial nerve except the olfactory and optic nerves. Between 25 and 48% of all schwannomas have been reported to arise in the head and neck, with the acoustic nerve being the most common site of origin there. Schwannomas of the palatine tonsil are rare; as far as we know, only 6 such cases have been previously reported in the literature; 5 of these 6 occurred in adults and the other in an adolescent. We report a new case in a 42-year-old woman, which was diagnosed on the basis of histopathology.

Schwannoma of the tonsil is an extremely uncommon clinical entity with only one reported case in an adult in the medical literature to date. We report, to our knowledge, the first known case in a child.

Pleomorphic lipoma is a rare, benign, soft tissue neoplasm that characteristically occurs as a subcutaneous mass in the posterior neck or upper back and rarely in the tonsillar fossa and oral cavity. Histologically, pleomorphic lipoma contains varying amounts of mature fat, areas of spindle and pleomorphic cells, floret giant cells and thick rope - like collagen in a myxoid stroma. Pleomorphic lipoma with scanty fatty elements is called the fat free variant of pleomorphic lipoma. The combination of meagre amount of fat and presence of pleomorphic elements gives a pseudosarcomatous picture unde

The authors describe the case of a 58 years old man, affected by squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil, who underwent left tonsillectomy with bilateral neck dissection, followed by radiotherapy. After a 6 months period, the patient began to suffer from dysphonia, dysphagia and loss of weight: a painless neoformation was detected at the right lobe of the tyhroid, resulted a metastasis of the tonsillar neoplasm. The search for intranodular thyroglobulin was negative; the patient underwent thyroidectomy which showed a massive infiltration of the right cricothyroid space, cricoid and thyroid wing

Lipomatous tumors represent an unfrequent cause for upper aerodigestive tract neoplasms, specially concerning the palatine tonsils, that should be included in their differential diagnosis. A case of palatine tonsil lipoma in a 11 year-old girl is reported and a revision of the available literature and some considerations about this condition are provided.

An angioleiomyoma was excised from the palatine tonsil in a 30-year-old woman who complained of a painless swelling in the region of the tonsil. The mucosa covering the lesion showed prominent dilated blood vessels, necessitating vascular laboratory investigations to exclude any possibility of an aneurysm arising from the carotid system. The mass was excised with little blood loss. This was an uncommon tumour in an unusual site and required radio-imaging and angiographic studies of the great vessels of the head and neck before any operation was attempted. To the best of our knowledge, this is
