Nowadays, given the massive migration movements toward and across EU countries, age assessment can be highly useful for estimating the real age of asylum seekers or in medico-legal assessments of age-disputed children charged with criminal acts. Demirjian et al.'s dental maturity score is currently a dental scoring system universally adopted for age assessment of unidentified children. Here we explore the biological compatibility of Demirjian's scores with respect to the estimation of certain chronological ages of forensic interest through an algorithm based on the theory of constrained graphs

A case report of a 6-year-old girl with a fractured maxillary left central incisor with an open apex is presented. The procedure used to repair the fracture included flap surgery with an intrasulcular incision and endodontic treatment. The patient was called for 3 months regular follow-up to check the root formation. At the end of 32 months just before the root was obturated by guttaperka, she fractured the same tooth. Flap surgery was repeated and the tooth was restored. The root canal was obturated with a root filling paste and guttaperka as the apex was closed. Examination 10 months after t

BACKGROUND: Several previous studies have reported an unusual root formation in which a fractured apical fragment of an immature root continued to develop independent of the main root after trauma to an immature tooth. To date, there have been only rare reports of the continuing apical formation of the fractured root associated with dens evaginatus (DE). This paper presents a case of a separated root tip formation associated with a fractured tubercle of DE.
CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old boy was referred for gingival sinus on the buccal side of the right mandibular second premolar (tooth # 45).

A case is reported of the replantation of a maxillary incisor with an immature apex following a traumatic avulsion. A 14-month follow-up clinical examination revealed the patient to be asymptomatic, the tooth to be still functional, and a recall radiograph showed no evidence of renewed periradicular breakdown. The indications for, and limitations of, replantation of an avulsed permanent incisor with an immature apex are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Avulsion of the permanent teeth is one of the most serious oral health problems among active children and adolescents. Traumatized patients require immediate and correct treatment in order to restore damaged structures and function that have major impact on daily patient's life. As a result, proper guidelines and fast treatment methods are necessary. This case report discusses treatment of maxillary right central incisor with an open apex that had been avulsed and replanted. We review applied treatment procedures to manage dental avulsion and restore function and aesthetics.

INTRODUCTION: The apex area in the primary teeth changes continuously due to the physiologic resorption, therefore; the apical foramen (AF) may not correspond to the anatomic apex (AA), which gives a big challenge to achieve successful endodontic treatment. The aim of this research was to study the difference distance (DD) between the position of the AA and AF, besides the difference acceptance (DA) in primary teeth, and the effect of the following variables: root canal curvature, resorption degree, and canal size on DD and DA separately.
METHODS: In this research, 180 root canals from 60 pri

Pre-Eruptive Intracoronal Resorption (PEIR) is a rare yet significant phenomenon in which an abnormal, well-circumscribed, radiolucent area develops in the tooth prior to eruption. This case report outlines the treatment of a 12 year old Hispanic female who was referred for endodontic evaluation of tooth #31 and subsequently diagnosed with PEIR. The patient's chief complaint was recorded as "spontaneous pain" in the lower right quadrant of her jaw. Clinical examination revealed a partially erupted tooth #31 with no visible decay. Radiographic examination, including a cone beam computed tomogra

INTRODUCTION: Dentinal damage and cracks induced by orthograde preparation methods have been reported in studies using extracted teeth. The purpose of this in situ investigation was to evaluate dentinal cracks in nonextracted teeth after final instrumentation. The null hypothesis is that orthograde root canal instrumentation will have no effect on crack initiation in teeth retained in the natural periodontium.
METHODS: Mandibular first and second premolars of pig jaws were selected. Forty single-rooted canals were divided into 5 groups (n = 8): (1) WaveOne (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties,

Diagnosis and treatment of chronic apical periodontitis associated with an abutment tooth in an extensive tooth-implant-supported fixed prosthesis is reported. Careful, complete interpretation of clinical data was imperative because the periapical radiolucency presented around the apex of a vital tooth. A retrograde endodontic approach was used to prevent an adverse outcome to the complex rehabilitative treatment that had been performed over many years.

We investigated the effects of proximity of the root apex to the maxillary labial cortical plate, palatal cortical plate, and incisive canal cortical plate on apical root resorption. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to measure the amount of root resorption and root apex movement around maxillary right and left central incisors in 30 adults who underwent four-bicuspid extraction followed by treatment with multibracket appliances. The patients were divided into three groups on the basis of the direction of root apex movement, after which the correlation between the amount of root resorptio

Systemic and local factors can modify the eruption time of teeth. Generalized eruption time changes could be due to some systemic diseases like hyperthyroidism, hypophosphatasia, precocious puberty, Proteus syndrome, etc. Localized early eruption of permanent teeth could be due to early extraction of deciduous teeth. Presented here is an extremely rare case of early eruption of permanent canines in a 7-year old female child. Though the number of such cases is very limited, the clinician should poses adequate knowledge and keeps an open eye to identify such cases.

The objective of this research was to evaluate, by scanning electron microscopy, the apical structure of extracted human permanent teeth with different degrees of pulp and periapical pathology. A total of 25 teeth were extracted: 5 teeth with vital pulp (group I); 10 teeth with pulp necrosis without radiographically visible periapical lesion (group II); 10 teeth with pulp necrosis with radiographically visible periapical lesion (group III). The root apex was sectioned and processed for scanning electron microscopy. In groups I and II, fibers covered the root cementum and there was no cementum

This case report of a patient with a central incisor with rapid destruction of periodontal tissues associated with pathologic tooth migration illustrates the esthetic and functional reconstruction of a severely compromised tooth. An interdisciplinary approach, including resolution of the infection and regenerative periodontal surgery followed by orthodontic tooth movement, transformed a hopeless tooth with high mobility, attachment loss approaching the apex, and a Miller Class IV recession into a clinically healthy tooth. Treatment planning for periodontally involved anterior teeth with pathol

AIM: This study describes the management of a replanted and endodontically treated avulsed permanent maxillary incisor tooth with 11 hours of extraoral time.
BACKGROUND: Avulsion is one of the most common and severe dental injuries occurring in young children and has an unreliable prognosis. Immediate avulsion treatment is essential to maintain the tooth's vitality and minimize complications. A successful outcome is determined by adequate preservation and early replantation.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A nine-year-old boy reported to the advanced dental care clinic with an avulsed tooth #21 due to a b
