INTRODUCTION: Distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN) is characterized by isolated distal muscle atrophy without sensory deficit. Nevertheless, clinical sensory loss has been reported despite preserved sensory nerve conduction in a few patients, thus differentiating these cases from the classical type 2 Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT2).
METHODS: We report 4 patients who presented with clinical sensory and motor neuropathy and normal peripheral sensory nerve conduction studies and were investigated with complete electrophysiological studies, including somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP).

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) <<disease>> is the generic name given to a group of genetic disorders characterized by a relatively isolated dysfunction of peripheral nerves, with combined motor and sensory impairment. These CMT syndromes are the most frequent genetically-determined peripheral neuropathies, with a global prevalence between 4.7 and 36/100,000. Their clinical phenotype is predominantly motor, with a grossly symmetrical distal amyotrophy involving both lower and upper limbs. Mode of inheritance is variable: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive or X-linked. Apparently sporadic forms

AIM: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a genetic neuropathy causing muscle weakening in the feet, legs and hands, with consequent impairment of ambulation and handgrip. For fast clinical evaluation and rehabilitation management of handgrip deficits, a functional classification in 4 stages or levels of clinical severity, based on the loss of handgrip types from the finest to the roughest, has been recently proposed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of each level of handgrip impairment in a wide population of patients affected with demyelinating and axonal CMT.
METHODS: Tw

We report the case of a young white man with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 that began at 4 years. At 15 years, he developed proteinuria, arterial hypertension, and renal insufficiency. Renal biopsy specimens studied by electron microscopy showed deposition of nonamyloidotic microfibrils. This is the first report of fibrillary glomerulopathy associated with this neurological disorder.

Crippling equinocavovarus position of the foot in advanced Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with its attendant metatarsalgia tender calluses and rigidity creates painful, limited, hobbling ambulation with lowered work and general activity tolerance. The object of the surgeries is to convert this foot into a plantigrade , more flexible, painless unit. Surgery consists of plantar fasciotomies off the tubercle of the os calcis and also transversely through the middle of the longitudinal arch. Dorsally angulated green-stick osteotomies are performed at the bases of all the metatarsals. A Jones operatio

Some developmental variations of tooth morphology may influence the potential for periodontal disease by allowing accumulation of bacterial plaque and calcified deposits. Mechanical plaque control becomes difficult even for the conscientious patient. Periodontal disease may be hastened in these cases. The therapist must be aware of these variations and their significance in the etiology of isolated periodontal lesions. Recognition of these anomalies and early diagnosis may improve the prognosis of the involved tooth.

A two year old from a family with typical Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease has extensive ocular and central abnormalities, severe generalized neuropathy, and amyotrophy. Many abnormalities previously described in association with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are combined in this patient, including chorioretinal degeneration, optic atrophy, facial weakness, oligophrenia, and generalized amyotrophy. Documentation of the diagnosis in the child's ancestors and the precedent for each of his abnormalities suggest that these features represent a virulent expression of the inherited defect.

After more than 80 years from the revolutionary discoveries of Otto Warburg, who observed high glucose dependency, with increased glycolysis and lactate production regardless of oxygen availability in most cancer cells, the 'Warburg effect' returns to the fore in neuronal cells affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD). Indeed, it seems that, in the mild phase of AD, neuronal cells "prefer" to use the energetically inefficient method of burning glucose by glycolysis, as in cancer, proving to become resistant to β-amyloid (Aβ)-dependent apoptosis. However, in the late phase, while most AD brain cell

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: For about 15 years, one of the authors (JS) has successfully treated patients suffering from rheumatic diseases with individually tested and electronically stored nosodes from tooth diseases and articular rheumatism using exogenic MORA bioresonance therapy. Until today no human study has tested that kind of nosode therapy. The present, partially controlled study aims to test the effectiveness of that type of nosode therapy.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A partially placebo-controlled study was carried out on 15-21 participants (depending on the parameter) who suffered fr…

Drawing on a large, nationally representative population of older American adults (n = 3610), the study shows that individuals with more than eight missing teeth have a 6%-10% higher likelihood of cardiovascular disease compared with those with fewer tooth losses. Poorer diet quality emerged as a key pathway linking tooth loss and cardiovascular outcomes.

AIM: To investigate the impact of systemic health and tooth-based factors on the outcome of root canal treatment (RCT).
METHODOLOGY: The target population consisted of all patients receiving RCT at the Helsinki University Clinic in 2008-2011. The inclusion criteria were diagnosable pre- and postoperative (minimum 6 months after root filling) radiographs and adequate patient records of RCT available. Teeth extracted for nonendodontic reasons were excluded. Patient documents including digital radiographs of 640 permanent teeth in 504 patients were scrutinized. The radiographs were assessed by t

INTRODUCTION: Poor oral health in systemically diseased individuals besides worsening the glycaemic status also has functional, social consequences such as masticatory inefficiency and stigmatized social participation, respectively. Periodontal problems remain one of the most common reasons for tooth mortality along with tooth decay and trauma.
METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in the outpatient department of teaching dental institution among the individuals visiting the institution. Persons with systemic illness were included in the study. In the preliminary step, interviews were conducte

Nerous system diseases, both central and peripheral, bring an incredible burden onto patients and enormously reduce their quality of life. Currently, there are still no effective treatments to repair nerve lesions that do not have side effects. Stem cell-based therapies, especially those using dental stem cells, bring new hope to neural diseases. Dental stem cells, derived from the neural crest, have many characteristics that are similar to neural cells, indicating that they can be an ideal source of cells for neural regeneration and repair. This review summarizes the neural traits of all the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of foot deformities in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease compared with normal persons according to severity of disease.
METHOD: Sixty-two patients with CMT disease were recruited for this study. The normal control group was composed of 28 healthy people without any foot deformity. Patients were classified into a mild group and a moderate group according to the CMT neuropathy score. Ten typical radiological angles representing foot deformities such as pes equinus and pes varus were measured. The CMT group angles were compared with tho

In humans, inherited variation in the number, size, and shape of teeth within the dentitions are relatively common, while rarer defects of hard tissue formation, including amelogenesis and dentinogenesis imperfecta, and problems associated with tooth eruption are also seen. In many cases, these anomalies occur in isolation, but they can also present as a feature of numerous well-characterized developmental syndromes. Complex reiterative signaling between the epithelium and mesenchyme is a feature of normal tooth development in the embryo, occurring from early patterning through morphogenesis,

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) type IV is a rare genetic disorder of connective tissue. Most patients with EDS type IV are frequently unaware of this disorder until the catastrophic rupture of an artery or bowel occurs. We are reporting an association between this and another uncommon autosomal dominant disorder, Charcot Marie Tooth disease. The neurologic problem led to painful foot deformities, requiring surgery, which was complicated by difficulty controlling bleeding in the friable tissues. Other reported associations of heritable disorders of connective tissue and neuropathies are described

This case report presents a 23-year-old male diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, who exhibited additional neurological symptoms suggestive of leukodystrophy. The patient experienced recurrent episodes of slurred speech, imbalance, and a recent tonic-clonic seizure, prompting admission. Neurological examination and imaging revealed bilateral white matter changes, raising suspicion of leukoencephalopathy. Further investigations confirmed a nonsense mutation c.64C>T (p.Arg22*) in the gap junction beta 1 (GJB1) gene. This case underscores the complexity of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

People with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease often undergo foot and ankle surgery, as foot deformities are common and cause a degree of functional limitations impairing quality of life. Surgical approaches are variable and there are no evidence-based guidelines. A multidisciplinary approach involving neurology, physical therapy and orthopaedic surgery is ideal to provide guidance on when to refer for surgical opinion and when to intervene. This review outlines the range of foot deformities associated with CMT, their clinical assessment, and their conservative and surgical and postoperative ma
