[Travel, sports and pregnancy].

This article is an attempt to review and to discuss critically the pros and cons of physical stress to which a pregnant woman is subjected by sports activities or by travel. The review is based on theoretical considerations as communicated in the article as well as on facts derived from casual observations or systematic studies. Besides the subjective feeling of well-being of the pregnant woman associated with sports activities, objective data favour the preservation or enhancement of fitness by training during pregnancy; other factors in favour of physical load, and the capacity to sustain su…

[Post-travel recurrent furunculosis].

Dermatological conditions are a frequent occurrence during travel to tropical regions. The most common are skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus species. Post-travel recurrent furunculosis is a newly defined (2015), transient clinical entity, whose distinct validity remains debated to this day. Two case studies are presented (involving an adolescent aged 12 and a young adult aged 34) who developed recurrent, painful, purulent nodular lesions in the axillary and dorsal regions following travel to Thailand. The patients received surgical drainage (incision and drainage), along…

Travel Medicine: Special Issues.

Risks during travel depend on travelers' comorbidities and trip activities. Travel on cruise ships, for pilgrimages or large events, or into the wilderness carries unique risks. Asking travelers about what activities they have planned or may do during travel can tailor the subsequent pretravel counseling points and help guide decisions about vaccines and drugs. Some prescriptions (eg, doxycycline for prophylaxis against leptospirosis) depend on the planned activities while abroad. Travelers should be prepared for potential emergencies and should be encouraged to research unique customs and law…

Travel vaccines throughout history.

Vaccinations are an important component of travel medicine. Beyond protection of travelers, vaccines are administered to prevent the importation of vaccine-preventable diseases at home and at destination. Proof of immunization to travel dates back to the first smallpox vaccine, developed by Edward Jenner in 1796. However, it took one century to generate the next vaccines against cholera, rabies, and typhoid fever. During the 20th century the armamentarium of vaccines used in travelers largely expanded with yellow fever, poliomyelitis, tetravalent meningococcal, and hepatitis A vaccines. The In…

The stress of travel.

International travel is an essential part of the life of elite athletes, both for competition and training. It is also becoming increasingly common among recreational sportspersons. Long-distance travel is associated with a group of transient negative effects, collectively referred to as 'travel fatigue', which result from anxiety about the journey, the change to an individual's daily routine, and dehydration due to time spent in the dry air of the aircraft cabin. Travel fatigue lasts for only a day or so, but for those who fly across several time zones, there are also the longer-lasting diffi…

Meningococcal disease and travel.

Meningococcal disease continues to be a worldwide problem. This review examines the impact meningococcal disease has on international travel and vice versa the impact international travel has on the intercontinental spread of meningococci. The risk of meningococcal disease to the endemic population differs from that of travellers. The best documented risk of meningococcal disease among travellers has been in Hajj pilgrims for Mecca and Madina in Saudi Arabia. In response to the recent Hajj associated outbreak of W135 meningococcal disease, quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine (against serogroups…

Current immunizations for travel.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: International travelers may be at risk from a variety of potentially severe and life-threatening infections. Some of these diseases are preventable, and vaccination remains a cornerstone of travel medicine. Vaccines that are important for international travel are reviewed, in a succinct update based on the most recent literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Discussed are vaccines for enteric infections (polio, cholera, hepatitis A, and typhoid), as well as those for hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, and meningococcal vaccines. The controversial end to the polio eradica…

Immunizations for international travel.

Many infections encountered by international travelers can be prevented by adherence to personal protective measures and appropriate vaccinations. This review outlined the incidence and importance of the major vaccine-preventable infectious diseases encountered by U.S. travelers, as well as the indications, contraindications, and side effects of available vaccines. Official proof of yellow fever vaccine often is required for entry into some countries. Based on endemic or epidemic infections at destinations, planned activities, and age and medical history of international travelers, other vacci…

[Travel with small children].

Travelling with young children can lead to difficult situations. Accordingly, travel preparations should be geared towards the needs of the youngest with appropriate medical advise. Young children tolerate most means of transportation. When travelling long distances by car, clear rules ought to be established, and many children require antiemetic measures. With regards to traffic safety, compromises during family vacation are not acceptable. Travelling by plane or train is less stressful than travelling by bus or car. As a medical advisor, one ought to be familiar with age limits for certain i…

Meningococcal disease and travel.

Invasive meningococcal disease, in both endemic and epidemic forms, is the cause of significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite all advances in therapy, the fatality rate of meningococcal meningitis remains unacceptably high, between 5% and 10%, and a similar proportion suffers long-term neurological sequalae. Prevention of this rapidly fatal disease is of paramount importance. The use of the available internationally licensed meningococcal vaccines would be indicated for individuals with medical conditions that increase the risk of the disease and for travelers to high-risk countri…
