Intrauterine crowding has been implicated as a risk factor in several orthopaedic conditions, such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), metatarsus adductus, and torticollis. Multiple gestations with concurrent intrauterine devices (IUDs) are rare events. We handled the case of a woman who discovered she was pregnant with triplets after the 12th week of gestation. Upon the mother's request the IUD was removed immediately and the pregnancy led a normal course until the planned caeserean delivery of three baby girls. This is the first report of triplet births after an early sharing occupancy of the narrow uterine cavity with an IUD. Such a gestation upon discovery should not automatically be presumed undesirable. Doppler arterial velocimetry waveforms was used as a method of antenatal surveillance for triplets. Six sets of triplet pregnancies were studied. Each fetus was identified by real-time-ultrasound scanning and the peak systolic/end diastolic (S/D) ratio was calculated. In one set of triplets two fetuses showed absent end diastolic flow. Both subsequently suffered from necrotising enterocolitis and had major bowel resection. The five other sets of triplets maintained a normal S/D ratio. Three had a normal outcome and two delivered prematurely.

Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) liposomes are of emerging interest because of their potential bioapplications in biosensing/imaging and light-driven therapeutic delivery. However, a potential challenge in vivo is their stability, since liposomes are prone to enzymatic degradation. Here, for the first time, we examine the impact of phospholipase hydrolysis on TTA-UC in liposomes. We applied a TTA-UC liposome integrating a BODIPY charge transfer sensitizer and perylene emitter pair within a DOPC membrane, that exhibits intense upconverted blue emission under green excitation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is an observational retrospective study of all women who presented to the Fetal Diagnostic Center between 1999-2009, had triplet pregnancies in the first trimester, received prenatal care and delivered at Abington Memorial Hospital. Data analysis was performed with SPPS version 15 for Windows using analysis of variance and Fisher's Exact test.

A 7-day-old male child presented with abdominal distention and jaundice. Radiological investigations revealed an encapsulated sac encasing three fetus-in-fetu (FIF) in the retroperitoneum. Laparotomy revealed a sac occupying almost the whole of the abdomen. The sac was stretching the duodenum and barely visible common bile duct, which were carefully separated. The rest of the bowel was displaced to the left. The sac containing three FIFs was excised intact. One of the fetuses was highly differentiated and had thoracic meningomyelocele, which has never been reported in FIF.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) may transmit perinatally or from breast milk. The risk for development of symptomatic CMV disease in very-low-birth-weight premature infants after transmission from maternal breast milk is not clear. There are scarce data in the literature about congenital CMV infection in multiple pregnancies, being mostly with twin gestations. Here we present a unique case of triplets with CMV infection transmitted via breast milk.
