Geometric morphometrics of the scutum for differentiation of trombiculid mites within the genus Walchia (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Trombiculidae), a probable vector of scrub typhus.

The vectors of scrub typhus are the larval stage of trombiculid mites, termed "chiggers". These vectors are very small - the larvae are approximately 0.2 mm in size - and therefore their morphological identification is difficult. Trombiculid mites are widely distributed across Asia and they can be identified at the genus level by the shape, size and setae/sensilla distribution of their dorsal chitin plate (scutum = shield), while morphological identification at the species level requires more mite characteristics. We recently developed a methodology to ascertain paired matched genotype and mor

Habitat Type-Based Assemblage and Distribution Prediction of Small Mammals and Chigger Mites (Acari: Trombiculidae) in Chuncheon City, Republic of Korea.

While urbanization leads to habitat loss for medium and large mammals, small mammals can survive in fragmented habitats. As they are known to be the primary hosts of chigger mites (Acari: Trombiculidae) that transmit scrub typhus, their habitat can be considered the primary distribution area for chigger mites. This study aims to examine the distribution of small mammals and chigger mites in four habitat types and analyzed species richness, mean intensity (MI), dominance, and infestation rate (IR). A total of six small mammal species were captured, 76.8% of which were identified as Apodemus agr…

Detection and characterization of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) in infected Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium) fletcheri chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae) with the polymerase chain reaction.

We developed a method for detecting and characterizing the DNA of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi in chiggers (larval trombiculid mites) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three procedures for extracting DNA from frozen chiggers were compared by evaluating the yield of PCR amplicand obtained with nine oligonucleotide primer pairs derived from the rickettsial 22 kD, 47 kD, groESL, 56 kD, and 110 kD antigen genes. Although extracts and primer pairs differed in amplification efficiency, R. tsutsugamushi DNA was successfully detected in extracts of colonized infected Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium) fl

Bacterial pathogens' screening in Brazilian chigger mites (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae), with the first report of 'Candidatus Rickettsia colombianensi'-like in avian-associated chiggers.

Chiggers are larval ectoparasites of the Trombiculidae that can transmit pathogens to their hosts. In this study, chiggers collected from birds in Brazil were morphologically identified as Blankaartia sinnamaryi, Eutrombicula batatas, Eutrombicula daemoni, Eutrombicula goeldii, Eutrombicula tinami, and Parasecia gilbertoi. For these specimens, a beginning attempt at molecular identification were also provided, as well as, were genetically screened to detect bacterial pathogens. The species B. sinnamaryi and E. tinami were positive for Rickettsia felis-like and 'Candidatus Rickettsia colombiane…

Comparative morphology and ultrastructure of the prosomal salivary glands in the unfed larvae Leptotrombidium orientale (Acariformes, Trombiculidae), a possible vector of tsutsugamushi disease agent.

The prosomal salivary glands of the unfed larvae Leptotrombidium orientale (Schluger) were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. In total, four pairs of the prosomal glands were identified--three pairs, the lateral, the medial and the anterior, belong to the podocephalic system, and one pair, the posterior, is separate having an own excretory duct. All glands are simple alveolar/acinous with prismatic cells arranged around a relatively small intra-alveolar lumen with the duct base. The cells of all glands besides the lateral ones contain practically mature electron-dense secreto

An Ecological Survey of Chiggers (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) Associated with Small Mammals in an Epidemic Focus of Scrub Typhus on the China-Myanmar Border in Southwest China.

Chiggers (chigger mites) are a group of tiny arthropods, and they are the exclusive vector of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ot), the causative agent of scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease). Dehong Prefecture in Yunnan Province of southwest China is located on the China-Myanmar border and is an important focus of scrub typhus. Based on the field surveys in Dehong between 2008 and 2022, the present paper reports the infestation and ecological distribution of chiggers on the body surface of rodents and other sympatric small mammals (shrews, tree shrews, etc.) in the region for the first time. Laboratory evaluation of aromatic essential oils from thirteen plant species as candidate repellents against Leptotrombidium chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae), the vector of scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus, a rickettsial disease transmitted by several species of Leptotrombidium chiggers (larvae), is endemic in many areas of Asia. The disease is best prevented by the use of personal protective measures, including repellents. In this study commercially produced aromatic, essential oils of 13 plant species and ethanol (control) were tested in the laboratory for repellency against host-seeking chiggers of Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean and Langston (Acari: Trombiculidae). A rapid, simple and economic in vitro test method was used by exposing the chigger for up to 5 min. Re…

Acarological investigation and detection of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) in field-collected chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae) and small mammals from scrub typhus positive localities in Pahang, West Malaysia.

Scrub typhus (ST) is an acute febrile illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi, 1920) that is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected chiggers. In recent years, ST has re-emerged as a public health concern in Malaysia. In 2024, more than 50 laboratory-confirmed human cases of ST were reported in Pahang. A collaborative investigation was undertaken on a subset of 26 cases to identify potential vector sources and animal hosts associated with O. tsutsugamushi transmission. Chigger-based sampling was conducted by trapping small mammals in suspected infection hotspots, including

A review of endoparasitic acarines of Malaysia with special reference to novel endoparasitism of mites in amphibious sea snakes and supplementary notes on ecology of chiggers.

Some 2,000 species of mites of the family Trombiculidae are known in the world. The 6-legged larvae are mostly ectoparasites of reptiles, birds, mammals and invertebrates. Their 8-legged active nymphs and adults are free-living predators. In the Asia-Pacific region, a few species in various genera are vectors of scrub typhus and scrub-itch. In this a paper, a very bizarre trombiculid species, Vatacarus ipoides Southcott 1957, endoparasitic in the trachea of the amphibious sea snake, Laticauda colubrina (Schenider) is re-described based mostly on new-born larvae reared in the laboratory. [Tsutsugamushi fever in the Kuril Islands].

The authors present the results of a 6-year study of tsutsugamushi fever at the Kuril islands. The area of the disease proved to include Southern Kuril islands - Shikotan and Kunashir. The principal natural carriers of tsutsugamushi among the mouse-like rodents and trombiculidae larvae were revealed; highly virulent strains were found to prevail among the tsutsugamushi rickettsia strains. Tsutsugamushi fever in the population is characterized by a benign course, pyrexia, primary affects and lymphadenitis.

Chigger mites of the genus Leptotrombidium: key to species and their distribution in China.

Chigger mites of the genus Leptotrombidium (Acari: Trombiculidae) transmit scrub typhus, caused by Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (= R.orientalis) in South-East Asia. In China, eighty-two species of Leptotrombidium have been recorded; these are listed with the names of Provinces where they were found. Five species, L.deliense, L.insularae, L.kaohuense, L.rubellum and L.scutellare, have been implicated as Chinese vectors of scrub typhus. A brief key is given to the larvae of all but three of the Leptotrombidium mites known in China.

[Ectoparasites and phoresants of the root vole (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) in the Polesye].

Drainage melioration in the Polesye resulted in a sharp increase in the number of tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) which quickly included into the parasitocenosis of the drained land. There were found 26 parasitic and nonparasitic species of Gamasoidea, 3 species of Ixodidae and 2 species of Trombiculidae, 10 species of Aphaniptera, 3 species of Anoplura but there was found no species specific only for the tundra vole. All found parasites occur on many hosts. This explains wide parasitic links of the tundra vole with other homothermic animals which especially extensive with the bank vole…

What's eating you? chiggers.

Belonging to the Trombiculidae family of mites, chigger specifically refers to the larval stage of the mite's life cycle when it is able to bite its host. Although humans act as an accidental host, chiggers will latch on to the skin and their feeding process leads to localized inflammation and irritation. In most cases, these pruritic erythematous papules and papulovesicles are self-healing within a couple weeks, so only symptomatic relief is required as necessary by means of topical antipruritics, oral antihistamines, topical corticosteroids, or an intralesional triamcinolone acetonide inject…

[Harvest mite Neotrombicula autumnalis in the Leipzig area].

The paper describes an isolated population of the plague-causing harvest mite, Neotrombicula autumnalis autumnalis (Trombiculidae) in the Leipzig area. The focus has an area of about 20 km2 and extends from the eastern outskirts of the city to the built-up sections with a strong anthropogenic impact. It seems to have existed within these limits for at least five decades, with some variation in space and time. The surrounding area is free from Neotrombicula autumnalis, except for two unstable and temporary small populations 7 and 14 km away, respectively. The leipzig population of harvest mites…
