Five mongrel dogs were sensitized to tuberculoprotein with Freund adjuvant, as determined by responses to tuberculin skin tests and by in vitro lymphocyte cultures. These animals served as blood donors for production of transfer factor. Nine mongrel dogs received single doses of transfer factor that was tuberculin specific. Successful transfer of tuberculin sensitivity as measured by lymphocyte transformations was achieved in five of nine animals. Canine lymphocyte cultures frequently showed relatively low transformations to mitogens as compared with responses noted in other animals. Dissociat…

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, several test methods with different useful values are available for diagnosis of the tuberculosis (TB) in non-human primates (NHPs). Despite some limitations of tuberculin skin test (TST), it is still the most commonly used method for TB testing of NHPs.
METHODS: During this investigation, TST was performed upon three groups of experimentally tuberculin sensitized and one group of non-sensitized vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) by means of two types of old tuberculin (OT) and two types of purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin.
RESULTS: The data obtained f…

Detection of latent tuberculosis infection is an important step in the control of tuberculosis. The tuberculin skin test is the only proven method for identifying tuberculosis infection in patients who do not have tuberculosis disease. The prevalence of tuberculosis infection among hospitalized patients in a pneumological department of an inner-city hospital was evaluated, using the intradermal tuberculin skin test (Mantoux technique). Interpretation of the Mantoux test was based on the size of induration in millimeters and the individual risk profile of the patients, according to the guidelin…

The 2000-2006 results of tuberculin diagnosis made in a city numbering 10.5 million people were retrospectively analyzed on the basis of an epidemiological tuberculosis survey among children. The higher cut-offs are not helpful in interpreting the tuberculin test. With more than 5 mm, it is necessary to have criteria for clear differences between the active tuberculous process, inactive tuberculous changes, and recent or previous Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. With the low prevalence of tuberculosis among children in a megapolis, the sensitivity of the method was 97.4%. Its specificity …

OBJECTIVE: To determine the response of tuberculosis patients to tuberculin skin tests.
METHOD: The results of skin tests used for initial assessment of tuberculosis patients in Catalonia were reviewed (Multicenter Tuberculosis Research Project). Negative skin tests were those with indurations < 5 mm; positive tests were those with indurations measuring > or = 5 mm. Individuals were classed as having or not having risk factors for developing tuberculosis and those without risk factors were classified by age, location and extension of tuberculosis.
RESULTS: Negative skin tests were seen in 1,…

OBJECTIVES: We sought to define the prevalence of tuberculin skin test (TST) positivity in a group of newly hospitalized patients, to identify risk factors for positive tests, and to examine the impact of testing on infection control practices.
DESIGN: Unblinded cohort study over 5 days in July 1992.
SETTING: A 1,000-bed university-affiliated hospital.
PATIENTS: All patients admitted (excluding obstetric patients and newborns) were interviewed. Patients without a history of tuberculosis (TB) or a positive TST were offered a TST with Candida and tetanus controls.
RESULTS: Of 346 patients of…

Five children who had been in close contact with highly infectious tuberculous individuals presented recently to the tuberculosis service of The Montreal Children's Hospital. Four had developed serious pulmonary tuberculosis and one tuberculous meningitis, all within the three months which followed a post-contact negative tuberculin test. The management of tuberculin-negative children recently exposed to active infectious tuberculosis by repeated skin tests and chest radiography alone is inadequate for their protection. These children are at high risk of developing disease by the time their tub…

BACKGROUND: The balance between the two subsets of T cell is pivotal for allergic sensitization.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 486 children vaccinated with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), aged 10-13 years, to evaluate whether tuberculin responses may contribute to airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR).
METHODS: Tuberculin skin test, allergic skin test, and methacholine challenge test were done. The methacholine concentration causing a 20% fall (PC20) in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) was used as a threshold of AHR. Atopy was defined as a reaction showing a mean w…

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic disorders has been increasing over the last 30 years, especially in developed countries. One factor associated with this rise may be the decline of many childhood infections. We investigated tuberculin responses in allergic children in order to see the development of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions to tubercule bacillus infection.
METHODS: The study sample was composed of 106 allergic and 100 nonallergic children vaccinated with bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). The standard Mantoux test was applied to all children. The reactions were read after 72 …

Response to BCG vaccination was studied in 261 apparently normal preschool children in a community. They were classified into different nutritional groups based on deficit in weight for age. In addition, nine children who had kwashiorkor and were admitted to the hospital were investigated. They were given 0.1 ml of BCG vaccine, and 6 months later, tuberculin sensitivity was assessed using 5 U of PPD. Blood samples were collected from 84 subjects and leukocyte migration inhibition was determined using the same antigen. After BCG vaccination, over 80% of children in the community showed positive…
