Tungiasis is an ectoparasitosis caused by penetration into the skin of the sand or chigger flea, Tunga penetrans. The epidemiology in Cameroon of this disease, often associated with poverty, is unknown. Accordingly, in August 2008, we conducted a study in Bangou, in Western Cameroon, among a sample of 403 people, divided in 111 families. All data were collected and analyzed with Epi-Info 6.4 software. The prevalence in this population was 32.7%, with infestation more frequent in males (P = 0.013), mostly in children aged 1 to 5 years. The most frequent clinical features were simple inflammator…

Tungiasis is an infestation of the skin due to the sand flea chigger (or Tunga penetrans). After penetration under the nails of the feet, this ectoparasite enlarged and the lesion becomes painful. Diagnosis is made on the past history (travel in tropical areas) and the inspection. Treatment consists of extraction the insect entire, and administration of topical antiseptic lotion.

Tungiasis is a cutaneous ectoparasitosis caused by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans whose higher prevalence occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa, South América and the Caribbean. We report a case of a 23 year old chilean male who presented dermal lesions suggestive of tungiasis on his return from Brazil. The diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy, identifying the arthropod and an egg from one of the lesions. The natural history, co-morbidities and treatment options were reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. It is widespread in poor urban and rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and South America. Imported cases of tungiasis are increasingly being reported due to the increased numbers of travelers visiting the affected areas.
CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old woman presented with a lesion on the subungual area of the right fourth toe, covered with a central dark crust. The lesion appeared two weeks after returning from Tanzania. The flea Tunga penetrans was identified by histopathological examina…

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by Tunga penetrans and Tunga trimamillata. There is a lack of histopathological studies that evaluate the recognition of this flea in tissues. We describe the ex vivo dermoscopic and the histopathological patterns of six cases and relate the findings to the developmental stage of the parasite as defined by the Fortaleza classification: two were classified as Fortaleza 3b, 3 as 4a, and 1 as 4b. Two dermoscopic patterns were observed: a brown pigmented ring and a radial crown with a central pore. The most common histopathological findings were an…

We report a 54-year-old male that, after working in a rural zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, presented with an itching cutaneous lesion in the wrist with a black small central zone. The patient extracted from the lesion a on of 0.5 mm diameter. The pathological study of the insect recognized its body segments. The epidemiological background and the characteristics of the lesion led to the diagnosis of tungiasis.

Tungiasis is the parasitic skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, also called the jigger flea, found in most intertropical countries. The contamination occurs when walking barefoot in the sand: adult females actively burrow the foot epidermis leading to self-limited lesions responsible for itching or pain. The diagnosis is made on clinical observation and history of travelling to an endemic country. The simple treatment is surgical extraction of the flea.

Tungiasis is a parasitic and zoonotic skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans-also called the jigger flea, which burrows into human skin, usually on the feet. The ectoparasitosis occurs in many economically depressed communities in the Caribbean, South America and Africa, and affects sporadically travellers to endemic areas. Usually, only one or two lesions are found in travellers, whereas the local populations commonly harbour dozens, sometimes even hundreds of lesions, associated with severe morbidity. We review case reports of tungiasis in returned travellers in terms of histor…

In tropical and subtropical countries, particularly in disadvantaged communities, tungiasis is a severe public health problem, which is often neglected by the authorities. The sand fleas Tunga penetrans, predominant in endemic areas, and Tunga trimamillata, whose cases in humans are less frequent, are the cause of this zoonosis. Domestic animals are potential reservoirs and disseminators of tungiasis, so controlling their infection would significantly advance the prevention of human cases. This literature review compiles the most recent studies and innovations in treating animal tungiasis. Stu…
