Increased valgus stresses on the medial aspect of the elbow can result in a number of bony and soft-tissue abnormalities. The most common abnormalities are ulnar neuropathy and valgus instability secondary to injury of the medial collateral ligament. Diagnosis and treatment of these disorders are discussed in this article.

The median, radial, and ulnar nerves of the upper limbs may be affected by various peripheral neuropathies, each of which may be categorized according to its cause, as either an entrapment or a nonentrapment neuropathy. Entrapment neuropathies, also referred to as nerve compression syndromes, include the supracondylar process syndrome, pronator syndrome, anterior interosseous nerve syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, posterior interosseous nerve syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and Guyon canal syndrome. Nonentrapment neuropathies include traumatic nerve injuries, infectious and inflammatory co

PURPOSE: Patients with ulnar neuropathy of unclear etiology occasionally present with lesion extension from elbow to upper arm level on MRI. This study investigated whether MRI thereby distinguishes multifocal neuropathy from focal-compressive neuropathy at the elbow.
METHODS: This prospective study was approved by the institutional ethics committee and written informed consent was obtained from all participants. 122 patients with ulnar mononeuropathy of undetermined localization and etiology by clinical and electrophysiological examination were assessed by MRI at upper arm and elbow level us

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most frequent entrapment syndrome in the upper limb after carpal tunnel syndrome. Clinical features are validated through electromyographic and sonographic examination. Although the two aforementioned entrapment syndromes share common pathophysiological traits, the conservative treatment approach for mild and moderate cases of UNE differs from that for median nerve entrapment. The present study identified 23 different types of scientific articles aimed to address this issue. The research stressed the importance of patient education and activity

INTRODUCTION: The sympathetic skin response (SSR) reflects the function of sudomotor sympathetic unmyelinated fibers. This study evaluates SSR abnormalities in ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE).
METHODS: Sympathetic skin response was obtained after electrical stimulation of the glabella recording simultaneously from the hand palm (P), third digit (M3) and fifth digit ipsilateral (U5) and contralateral (cU5) to the side of UNE. Ten consecutive SSRs were recorded from each recording side of all participants.
RESULTS: The authors enrolled 31 patients (mean age 54.3 ± 11.4 years) and 25 subjec

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The cutaneous silent period (CSP) reflects the function of A-delta sensory fibers. There are few studies on CSP in nerve entrapment syndromes. This study aims to evaluate the neurophysiological abnormalities of small-diameter sensory fibers in ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) by means of CSP.
METHODS: We consecutively evaluated UNE patients at one electrodiagnostic laboratory. The CSP was obtained upon stimulating the fifth (D5) and third digits, recording from the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscles.
RESULTS: We enrolled 37 UNE pa

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy at the wrist traditionally has depended primarily on clinical and electrodiagnostic findings. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound have emerged as very important diagnostic tools in diagnosis of focal neuropathies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present clinical, electrodiagnostic, and MRI findings in 2 patients with ulnar neuropathies at the wrist caused by ganglion cysts.
DISCUSSION: Ulnar neuropathies at the wrist are common, may present with different patterns of motor and sensory deficits, and can be misdiagnosed. Nerve conduction studie…

BACKGROUND: Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second commonest entrapment neuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and yet the laterality is not well delineated. Our aim was to establish the laterality of UNE in a large cohort of patients.
METHODS: All new patients with clinical and electrodiagnostic (EDX) confirmed UNE over a 13-year period were included. We used multivariate analysis to examine potential predictors of laterality, and unilateral vs bilateral UNE.
RESULTS: Of 880 cases, 61% were left-sided and 39% right-sided. These proportions did not change regardless of the

OBJECTIVE: This case series sought to determine the prevalence of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) by using electrophysiologic criteria among all computer keyboard operators (CKOs) referred over a four-year period (1995-1999) for electrodiagnosis (EDX) due to clinical suspicion of focal upper limb neuropathies.
PARTICIPANTS: All CKOs referred to an EDX laboratory for suspicion of focal upper limb neuropathies primarily from private practice physicians, mostly hand surgeons, and an occupational medicine clinic.
METHODS: All 148 CKOs underwent NCV studies of the upper limbs, which included

We report a new self-administered questionnaire for assessment of symptom severity of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). The new UNE and Levine's questionnaires were administered to a sample of UNE subjects and for comparison also to a sample of subjects with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We enrolled 89 consecutive patients (32 women, 57 men, mean age 52.3 years) with UNE and 203 consecutive patients (157 women and 46 men, mean age 53.7 years) with CTS. The protocol of the study consisted in self-administration of the new UNE and Levine's questionnaires, as well as scoring of clinical and el

Side effects are a common occurrence in the use of subdermal contraceptive implants (Norplant); approximately 70% to 80% of women using the device report abnormal uterine bleeding, headaches, acne, mastalgia, nervousness, appetite changes, and weight gain. Local implant site reactions range from 0.4% to 4.7%, with pain being the most common. Other insertion site complications include infection and implant expulsion. Only three cases have been described in the literature concerning implant site-related neuropathy, involving the sensory branch of the musculocutaneous nerve (lateral cutaneous ner

A case of ulnar neuropathy, selectively affecting the deep branch and showing positive palmaris brevis sign, is reported. The palmaris brevis muscle was not only intact, but also showed excessive cocontraction with abductor digiti minimi. Palmaris brevis sign, when present, is useful in clinically localizing the site of the ulnar nerve lesion.
