PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Herein, we seek to review the clinical applications of penile duplex Doppler ultrasound (PDDU) in sexual medicine practices and discuss the indications, protocols, advantages, and limitations of this diagnostic modality. Other more outdated diagnostic tests, such as cavernosometry, are briefly discussed to provide the reader a background of understanding on the evolution of diagnostic testing within the realm of sexual medicine.

Ultrasonography of the temporal arteries detects characteristic signs of vasculitis with a high sensitivity and specificity: a hypoechoic halo due to an oedema of the artery wall and stenoses. The use of modern scanners with high resolution is essential. A halo has to be displayed in two planes. It is always circumferential. The colour intensity must not be too strong, otherwise the colour may cover the halo. A hypoechoic halo is also seen in large vessel giant cell arteritis at the axillary and brachial arteries and at the temporal arteries in polyarteritis nodosa.

This study included 17 patients (five men and 12 women) with clinical diagnosis of Moyamoya disease from conventional angiograms. TCD ultrasonography is a noninvasive means to study the cerebral vasculature. By varying the depth and angle of insonation of a pulsed sound wave, the direction and velocity profile of the cerebral arteries can be ascertained. This can be used to identify areas of focal stenosis and increased resistance and to estimate the adequacy of cerebral flow. TCD ultrasonography commonly is used in SAH to detect cerebral vasospasm. Many centers interpret rising velocities as increasing vessel narrowing and initiate medical strategies based on these values. TCD use in head trauma is less clearly defined.

The Döppler ultrasonic examination proposed for the diagnosis of acute painful scrotal syndromes has been used during 4 months. BACKGROUND: Transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients are at high vascular risk. We assessed the value of extracranial (ECD) and transcranial (TCD) Doppler and duplex ultrasonography to predict clinical outcome after TIA.

Local lesions occurring after conservative surgery for breast neoplasms require diagnostic means capable of detecting and assessing the recurrence of such cancers.
