[Determination of the level of urinary tract infection in children by antibodies coating bacteria from urinary sediment].

The article deals with the evaluation of the significance of surface antibodies in urinary sediment bacteria by direct immunofluorescence in children with urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), so as of determination of location of the infection. Sixty five children were studied, aged from 1 to 16.5 years. Based on the recognized criteria in literature, all patients were classified into three groups: chronic pyelonephritis (CP)--10 patients, acute pyelonephritis (AP)--34 patients, and lower urinary tract infections (LUTI)--21 patients. On the basis of the analysis of the

Diagnosis and therapy of Capillaria plica infection: report and literature review.

Worldwide, data on Capillaria (Pearsonema) plica infections of the urinary tract in domestic carnivores are limited. Nevertheless, cystitis with hematuria, dysuria or pollakiuria may suggest a C. plica infection. A three-year old dog from Poland showing pollakiuria and hematuria was presented. At urine analysis, C. plica eggs were found in the urine sediment. The dog was unsuccessfully treated with a daily oral dose of fenbendazole 50 mg/kg BW for 5 days, while a single subcutaneous administration of ivermectin 0.2 mg/kg BW once effectively eliminated C. plica infection.

Development of a smartphone based spectrometer for high-resolution urinalysis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects millions worldwide but remains under-diagnosed, especially in resource-limited settings. Current diagnostic methods, including visual and dipstick urinalysis, lack quantitative accuracy, while laboratory-based tests remain inaccessible for routine or remote monitoring. Here we present SpectraPhone, a smartphone-integrated, portable spectrometer designed for quantitative, point-of-care urinalysis. Leveraging the smartphone's built-in camera and flashlight, SpectraPhone captures high-resolution spectral data to accurately quantify hematuria and albuminuria, w

A multi-head YOLOv12 with self-supervised pretraining for urinary sediment particle detection.

Automatic and reliable urine sediment analysis is essential for timely diagnosis and management of renal and urinary disorders. However, manual methods are time-consuming, subjective, and limited by operator abilities. In this study, we propose a novel deep learning method based on a multi-head YOLOv12 architecture combined with self-supervised pretraining and advanced inference through Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) to effectively address these challenges. Unlike prior methods that employed a single detection head, our architecture features six specialized and independent detection head

Evaluating the impact of polypropylene-based cat litter on urinalysis reliability in feline patients.

Urinalysis is a key diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine, aiding in the detection of urinary diseases and systemic conditions such as diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease. This study investigates the impact of polypropylene-based urine collection litter on the reliability of urinalysis results in feline patients. Urine samples were collected from 50 cats and divided into native and litter-treated aliquots. Parameters such as leukocytes, ketones, glucose, protein and pH were analyzed using dipsticks, refractometry and sediment examination. Significant differences were observed in leuk

First record of feline urinary bladder worm (Capillaria syn. Pearsonema) in Sri Lanka: Clinical, histopathological and molecular characterization.

Nematode infections in the urinary tract of domestic cats and dogs are rare, although common in wild predatory animals. Here we report a case of a urinary bladder capillariosis in a cat from Sri Lanka. A three-year-old domestic male cat from the Kalutara District was brought to a private veterinary hospital due to frequent urination, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The physical examinations reported severe emaciation, gasping and abdominal breathing and retarded growth. Successive to urinary sedimentation, Capillaria-type eggs were detected. Blood Urea Nitrogen level of 28.02 Mmol/L and serum

Hereditary xanthinuria and urolithiasis in a domestic shorthair cat.

A 2-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with a history of hematuria, stranguria and intermittent urethral obstruction. Urine sediment showed hematuria, pyuria, and yellow-brown, amorphous and spherical crystals. Upon surgical correction of the obstructed urethra by perineal urethrostomy, many dark yellow to grey, irregular, gravel-like to millet grain-sized uroliths, consisting of 100% xanthine by crystallography were found. The urinary xanthine concentration was high. The cat subsequently developed bilateral nephroliths, recurrent urinary tract infection, and chronic kidney failure.

Renal tubular epithelial cells add value in the diagnosis of upper urinary tract pathology.

Background Diagnosis of upper urinary tract infections (UTI) is challenging. We evaluated the analytical and diagnostic performance characteristics of renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) and transitional epithelial cells (TECs) on the Sysmex UF-5000 urine sediment analyzer. Methods Urinary samples from 506 patients presenting with symptoms of a UTI were collected. Only samples for which a urinary culture was available were included. Analytical (imprecision, accuracy, stability and correlation with manual microscopy) and diagnostic performance (sensitivity and specificity) were evaluated. Re

Urine macrophages reflect kidney macrophage content during acute tubular interstitial and glomerular injury.

Macrophage polarization is a major contributing factor in acute kidney injury (AKI). We aim to determine its biomarker value in differentiating etiologic causes of various intrinsic renal AKI. A total of 205 patients with renal intrinsic AKI were enrolled. Urinary sCD163 was quantified and macrophage subtypes in urine and in renal biopsy were determined. Compared to healthy controls and AKI due to interstitial or tubular injuries (0 pg/μmol), urinary sCD163 was markedly higher in glomerulopathy, especially in diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis (275.5 pg/μmol) and significantly correlated

Urinary microbiome profiling as a non-invasive tool for identifying biomarkers in systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis.

INTRODUCTION: Bacteriome alterations have been implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the relationship between SLE and the urinary microbiome remains underexplored. This study aimed to characterize the urinary microbiome of SLE patients using 16S rRNA sequencing and to investigate its correlations with clinical parameters through integrative analyses. METHODS: Urine sediment samples were collected from individuals with SLE and lupus nephritis (LN) (n = 20), SLE without LN (n = 22), and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 23). DNA was extracted and subjected to

Comparison of Conventional Sediment Smears and Liquid-Based Cytology and Utility of Cell Block Preparation in Urinary Cytology.

INTRODUCTION: The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology (TPS) provides a non-invasive screening tool for high-grade urinary bladder carcinomas. In resource-poor settings, urinary cytology continues to be performed on conventional sediment smears (CSS) only. Cell blocks (CBs), though an essential part of cytology, are not part of routine protocol for urinary cytology. The present study was undertaken to compare CSS and liquid-based cytology (LBC) in urinary cytology, and to assess the utility of CB preparation in decreasing the indeterminate/grey zone diagnosis (Non-diagnostic/Atypical Ur

Atypical urothelial cells investigation with automated urinalysis and expert review of microscopic sediment as early parameter for suspected bladder cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Automated urinalysis offers rapid and efficient evaluation of urine sediment; however, most systems do not routinely report epithelial cell atypia. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical relevance of the atypical cell (Atyp.C) parameter generated by the Sysmex UF-4000 analyzer as an early indicator of suspected urothelial carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted using the UF-4000 analyzer to detect Atyp.C in urine specimens from high-risk patients. Atyp.C results were collected simultaneously for all samples. Specimens with positive A

[The nephrotoxic effect of therapy with fumaric acid esters in psoriasis].

Two sisters, aged 25 and 29 years, with generalized psoriasis guttata since childhood, developed nausea, upper-abdominal pain, loss of appetite, palpitations and flushes in the course of local and oral administration of fumaric acid esters. Because of these side effects the treatment was discontinued after about two weeks, and the symptoms disappeared. But proteinuria and haematuria were subsequently noted, creatinine concentration rose to 2.2 and 2.5 mg/dl, respectively, while creatinine clearance fell to 44 and 27 ml/min, respectively. Examination of urinary sediments and analysis of urinary

Urine microscopy revealing a metabolic disorder: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperoxaluria type 3 is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by HOGA1 mutations, leading to recurrent calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis. Diagnosis is often delayed, and 24-hour urine oxalate measurements can be unreliable in patients with normal kidney function. Urine microscopy can detect high-density calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals, providing a rapid diagnostic clue. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old woman with recurrent nephrolithiasis since age 9 had undergone prior percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureteroscopy. Urine microscopy revealed abundant calcium oxalate

Mitochondrial myopathy associated with a novel mutation in mtDNA.

A 6-year-old boy had progressive muscle weakness since age 4 and emotional problems diagnosed as Asperger syndrome. His mother and two older siblings are in good health and there is no family history of neuromuscular disorders. Muscle biopsy showed ragged-red and cytochrome coxidase (COX)-negative fibers. Respiratory chain activities were reduced for all enzymes containing mtDNA-encoded subunits, especially COX. Sequence analysis of the 22 tRNA genes revealed a novel G10406A base substitution, which was heteroplasmic in multiple tissues of the patient by RFLP analysis (muscle, 96%; urinary sed

Urinary sediment mRNA level of extracellular matrix molecules in adult nephrotic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Glomerular and tubulointerstitial fibrosis play important roles in the progression of chronic kidney disease. We determine whether urinary mRNA levels of extracellular matrix proteins reflect the degree of kidney fibrosis and predict renal function decline in adult nephrotic patients. METHODS: We studied 56 adult nephrotic patients and 20 controls. Urinary mRNA levels of collagen I A1 chain (COL1A1), collagen IV A3 chain (COL4A3), and fibronectin were measured. RESULTS: Urinary sediment mRNA levels of COL1A1 and fibronectin were significantly higher in nephrotic patients as compa
