The effects of vitreous hemorrhages on anterior uveal vessels were studied. Albino rabbits were injected intravitreally with autogenous blood, plasma, RBCs, iron-dextrin, or Ringer's solution. The vascular permeability was assessed by fluorescein iris angiography, carbon labeling and penetration of peroxidase. Following one injection of blood, aqueous flare and fluorescein leakage from the iris were observed for 40 days. Intense vascular carbon labeling in iridial and ciliary processes was present for 1-40 days and weak-to-moderate labeling in the iris for 9-40 days. Repeated blood injections …

Between 1983 and 1986, six eyes with diffuse malignant melanomas of the anterior uvea were enucleated at the Eye Hospital of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. The characteristic clinical findings were a monolateral open-angle glaucoma in the same eye and a diffuse spreading of malignant melanocytes on the inner walls of the anterior chamber. These cells can be differentiated biomicroscopically (40 x magnification, Zeiss slit-lamp) from melanin granula and benign melanocytes. Surgical techniques of iridocyclectomy, iridochoroidectomy, eye wall resection, eye wall biopsy, and ab interno retinochoridectomy are described. Surgical approaches to uveal neoplasms offer a new alternative for management of these disorders. Uveal and retinal biopsy expand our knowledge of pathological processes involved in tapetoretinal degeneration and uveitides. Additionally, both eye wall biopsy and resection provide tissue to confirm tumor diagnosis and malignancy.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a recently discovered, amidated 36 amino acid residue neuropeptide present in many but not all sympathetic noradrenergic neurons. In the guinea-pig eye, NPY immunoreactive fibers were found to have the same distribution as noradrenergic fibers except that there were fewer at the iris dilator, in the cornea, and in the chamber angle. BACKGROUND: Ocular tuberculosis (TB) affects 1-2% of patients with TB, with TB uveitis being the most common. This series aims to look at different manifestations of tuberculosis associated uveitis and the different tests used to make a presumptive or definitive diagnosis.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with TB related uveitis in Hong Kong SAR between 2017 and 2020 were reviewed. Demographics, clinical features, investigations and treatments of patients were collected.

PURPOSE: To report a case of advanced childhood glaucoma secondary to congenital ectropion uveae (CEU).
CASE REPORT: The patient was a seven-year-old boy with unilateral glaucoma secondary to CEU and facial asymmetry, mild unilateral ptosis, and proptosis in the left eye. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was 28 mmHg and cup-to-disc ratio was 0.8 in the left eye. After starting glaucoma medication, IOP decreased to 21 mmHg. The neuropeptide galanin has not been localized previously in the primate uvea, and the neuropeptide somatostatin has not been localized in the uvea of any mammal. In 1905, Parsons first described a family with a history of four generations with uveal melanoma associated with breast cancer. The family history has now been brought up to date using genealogical sources to determine the origin of this family which was traced to the East End of London in the early 19th century. In addition, immunohistochemical investigations have showed mutant p53, a tumor suppressor gene, in museum specimens of uveal melanoma after 150 years. This family probably represents the earliest example of the Li-Fraumeni syndrome on record.

Light- and electron-microscopic examination of arterioles, venules and capillaries of the eyes of several mammalian species has shown that the microfibrils of ocular elastic tissue attach to microvascular basement membranes throughout the uvea (iris, ciliary body, choroid) and optic nerve. Although metastases from malignant melanomas of the ciliary body and choroid are common, similar tumors from the iris are rare. In this article seven such cases are described. They represent 3.5% of 196 cases in our files that were followed up for a minimum of five years where the tumor was confined to the iris and did not involve the ciliary body or the choroid. We examined by light and electron microscopy five melanocytomas from four patients. Two types of cells were observed in each tumor. The predominant cell type in most of the tumors studied consisted of plump polyhedral nevus cells that contained numerous giant melanosomes. These cells showed advanced differentiation. They appeared to be metabolically inactive and to have been the cause of the heavy pigmentation and benign nature of these tumors.
