Baicalin reactivates ocular dominance plasticity to restore vision from amblyopia in adult mice.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by reduced visual acuity due to abnormal visual experience during critical periods. In adulthood, the diminished plasticity of the primary visual cortex (V1) presents a major barrier to effective treatment. Here, we investigate whether baicalin, a flavonoid derived from Scutellaria baicalensis, can restore ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) and promote functional recovery in a mouse model of adult amblyopia. Using intrinsic signal optical imaging and electrophysiological recording, we demonstrate that 10 mg/kg baicalin treatment reactivat

Context-Aware Vision Language Foundation Models for Ocular Disease Screening in Retinal Images.

Foundation models are large-scale versatile systems trained on vast quantities of diverse data to learn generalizable representations. Their adaptability with minimal fine-tuning makes them particularly promising for medical imaging, where data variability and domain shifts are major challenges. Currently, two types of foundation models dominate the literature: self-supervised models and more recent vision-language models. In this study, we advance the application of vision-language foundation (VLF) models for ocular disease screening using the OPHDIAT dataset, which includes nearly 700,000 fu

A Rare Case of Rash, Blurry Vision, and Papilledema Caused by Isolated Ocular Syphilis.

Papilledema is a high-risk cause of vision changes in the Emergency Department (ED) and a critical physical examination finding because of its close association with etiologies that may progress to vision loss or death. Syphilis is a rare infectious cause of papilledema, with scarce case reports published showing its ability to develop such sequela. We present a case of a 35-year-old male with a past medical history of newly diagnosed HIV who originally presented to the ED with a rash and rapidly worsening visional changes. While in the ED, the patient developed a brief syncopal episode and ac

A Case of Sustained Viral Shedding of Mpox With Ocular Involvement Resulting in Vision Loss.

Mpox, caused by infection with Monkeypox virus, usually presents as a mild, self-limited illness in immunocompetent persons that resolves within 2-4 weeks. Serious complications have been reported when mpox lesions involve vulnerable anatomic sites, such as the eye, and in those with substantial immunosuppression. We describe a patient with advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection and sustained viral shedding of mpox with ocular involvement, which resulted in vision loss.

Ocular Hypotonia and Transient Decrease of Vision as a Consequence of Exposure to a Common Toad Poison.

The common toad produces venom (bufotoxin) that is produced in the parotid gland of the toad as well as in the skin. This toxic compound is a potent inhibitor of Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Physiological effects of bufotoxin are similar to those of digitalis and cause increased heart rate and muscle contractions. Ocular toxicity was described. A 67-year-old female patient was admitted to the emergency service because of sudden vision loss and a burning sensation in both eyes after she had been exposed to the poison of a toad. Slit lamp examination showed conjunctival hyperaemia and signs of ocular

The Importance of the Interaction Between Ocular Motor Function and Vision During Human Infancy.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the impact of imposed abnormal visual experience on the postnatal development of the visual system. These studies have provided fundamental insights into the mechanisms underlying neuroplasticity and its role in clinical care. However, the ocular motor responses of postnatal human infants largely define their visual experience in dynamic three-dimensional environments. Thus, the immature visual system needs to control its own visual experience. This review explores the interaction between the developing motor and sensory/perceptual visual systems, together wi

A cross-sectional study on vision-related quality of life in patients with ocular GvHD.

Ocular GvHD affects about 40-60% of patients receiving bone marrow transplantation. Ocular complaints worsen quality of life (QoL), which, besides survival time, is a primary end point in a patient's follow-up. The aim of our study was to assess the ocular surface status and vision-related QoL (VRQoL) and explore the potential determinants in VRQoL in patients with chronic GvHD with ocular involvement. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated 40 patients with ocular GvHD after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation assessing ocular symptoms and signs, VRQoL and ophthalmologic

Measuring ocular aberrations and image quality in peripheral vision with a clinical wavefront aberrometer.

BACKGROUND: Clinical aberrometers are accurate, robust instruments for measuring wavefront aberrations for foveal vision, but several practical concerns arise when performing aberrometry of the peripheral field. The purpose of this study was to evaluate these concerns experimentally using a physical eye model. METHODS: A physical model eye was constructed to provide a stable test case that resembled a human eye. Aberrations were measured with a commercial Shack-Hartmann aberrometer along lines-of-sight ranging from zero to 45 degrees of eccentricity. Commercial software for wavefront reconstr

Vision and Ocular Surface Salvage in Extreme Postburn Cicatricial Ectropion With Infectious Exposure Keratitis.

Prevention and early management of postburn cicatricial ectropion is the best strategy to avoid ocular complications, with poor visual prognosis in extreme cases. A 51-year-old man presented with diminution of vision and absolute inability to close both eyes, 3 months after thermal burn injuries to face, upper limbs, and trunk. His best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 1/60 in BE. He had bilateral extremely severe ectropion involving both upper and lower lids with complete inability to close the eyes. The ensuing exposure keratitis developed secondary infection by Methicillin-resistant Staph

Ocular albinism with absent foveal pits but without nystagmus, photophobia, or severely reduced vision.

A 9-year-old Caucasian girl of northern European ancestry presented with findings suggestive of ocular albinism, although she maintains good visual acuity and lacks nystagmus and photophobia. DNA analysis revealed that the patient is a compound heterozygote for mutations in the tyrosinase gene, which is typically associated with overt, generalized oculocutaneous albinism and severe ocular symptoms. Her particular genotype confers no apparent cutaneous disease and only mild ocular features.
