3D printing lunate prosthesis for stage IIIc Kienböck's disease: a case report.

Stage IIIc Kienböck's disease is a clinical challenge to treat collapse of the lunate bone. A new reconstructive surgery was described in one patient using 3D printing lunate prosthesis. The prosthesis shape was designed by tomographic image processing and segmentation using technology compared with the intact side matched by mirror symmetry and 3D post-processing technologies. The patient recovered nearly full range of motion of the wrist after 12 months. The visual analog scale scores and Cooney scores were 2 points and 91 points. We demonstrated that an anatomical reconstruction to Kienböck

Sensory feedback add-on for upper-limb prostheses.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sensory feedback systems have been of great interest in upper-limb prosthetics. Despite tremendous research, there are no commercial modality-matched feedback systems. This article aims to introduce the first detachable and feedback add-on option that can be attached to in-use prostheses. TECHNIQUE: A sensory feedback system was tested on a below-elbow myoelectric prosthesis. The aim was to have the amputee grasp fragile objects without crushing while other accidental feedback sources were blocked. DISCUSSION: A total of 8 successful trials (out of 10) showed that sensory

[Keratoprostheses. Clinical aspects].

In patients with dry eye, like pemphigoid, Fuchs-Stevens-Johnson syndrome and xerophthalmia, in eyes with severe vascularisation of the cornea due to severe burns, in a leucoma adherens or following recurrent transplant rejections as well as in cloudy corneas of silicone-filled eyes, restoration of visual acuity can often only be achieved by a keratoprosthesis. In the case of an intact posterior segment and retinal function a normal visual acuity can be anticipated but mostly with a restricted visual field. Complications vary from glaucoma, retroprosthetic membranes, necrosis of the recipient

Assessing the Effect of DESC-Feedback on Cognitive Load, Gaze Behavior, and Motor Performance During Manipulation Tasks Performed With Hand Prosthesis.

Individuals with upper limb amputation often reported functionality limitations due to poor confidence in myoelectric hand prosthesis control and the lack of tactile and proprioceptive feedback. This is typically associated with increased cognitive demands and compensatory reliance on vision to perform activities of daily living. Such limitations can contribute to user frustration and device abandonment. Providing sensory feedback has the potential to reduce these limitations, but its implementation must be intuitive to avoid adding further cognitive demand on the user. The Discrete Event-driv

Porous-coated knee arthroplasty. A case report concerning bone ingrowth.

The area of bone-metal interaction in uncemented implants is regarded by many investigators as the key to the success or failure of the implant. The nature of the interaction is poorly understood because the zone is technically difficult to visualize and analyze. In order to test the power of modern imaging, analyzing, and metallurgical methods in this context, a well-functioning porous-coated knee prosthesis (tibial component) removed from the knee of a 65-year-old man was sectioned and examined by light microscopy, roentgenogram, scanning electron microscopy, and radiologic energy dispersive

A fully organic retinal prosthesis restores vision in a rat model of degenerative blindness.

The degeneration of photoreceptors in the retina is one of the major causes of adult blindness in humans. Unfortunately, no effective clinical treatments exist for the majority of retinal degenerative disorders. Here we report on the fabrication and functional validation of a fully organic prosthesis for long-term in vivo subretinal implantation in the eye of Royal College of Surgeons rats, a widely recognized model of retinitis pigmentosa. Electrophysiological and behavioural analyses reveal a prosthesis-dependent recovery of light sensitivity and visual acuity that persists up to 6-10 months

A tool for measuring mental workload during prosthesis use: The Prosthesis Task Load Index (PROS-TLX).

When using a upper-limb prosthesis, mental, emotional, and physical effort is often experienced. These have been linked to high rates of device dissatisfaction and rejection. Therefore, understanding and quantifying the complex nature of workload experienced when using, or learning to use, a upper-limb prosthesis has practical and clinical importance for researchers and applied professionals. The aim of this paper was to design and validate a self-report measure of mental workload specific to prosthesis use (The Prosthesis Task Load Index; PROS-TLX) that encapsulates the array of mental, physi

Hybrid construct for two levels disc disease in lumbar spine.

Prospective study. To study the validity of Hybrid construction (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) ALIF at one level and total disc arthroplasty (TDA) at adjacent, for two levels disc disease in lumbar spine as surgical strategy. With growing evidence that fusion constructs in the treatment of degenerative disc disease (DDD) may alter sagittal balance and contribute to undesirable complications in the long-term, total disc arthroplasty (TDA) slowly becomes an accepted treatment option for a selected group of patients. Despite encouraging early and intermediate term results of single-level tota

[The state of the stirrup prosthesis estimated from the results of functional multispiral computed tomography].

The objective of the present study was to estimate the state of the stirrup prosthesis based on the results of functional multispiral computed tomography (fMSCT). A total of 30 patients suffering otosclerosis and treated by stapedoplasty were examined using the modified fMSCT technique developed by the authors. The data obtained were compared with the results of the audiologic study. It was shown that modified fMSCT makes it possible to objectively and visually estimate the state of the stirrup prosthesis, elucidate the causes of poor outcome of the surgical treatment and identify the indicati

[Electronic visual prostheses].

BACKGROUND: Currently, no treatment is available for progressive retinal dystrophies. The fabrication of an implantable visual prosthesis seems to be possible now as a result of advances in the fabrication of extremely small micro-systems and their encapsulation in biocompatible materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The development of implantable visual prostheses is based on the fabrication of remotely controlled microelectrode arrays which have to be implanted in different target regions of the visual system. Prototypes of such systems have already been implanted in animal experiments and also …

Importance of eye position on spatial localization in blind subjects wearing an Argus II retinal prosthesis.

PURPOSE: With a retinal prosthesis connected to a head-mounted camera (camera-connected prosthesis [CC-P]), subjects explore the visual environment through head-scanning movements. As eye and camera misalignment might alter the spatial localization of images generated by the device, we investigated if such misalignment occurs in blind subjects wearing a CC-P and whether it impacts spatial localization, even years after the implantation. METHODS: We studied three subjects blinded by retinitis pigmentosa, fitted with a CC-P (Argus II) 4 years earlier. Eye/head movements were video recorded as s

Cinefluoroscopy for assessment of mechanical heart valves with suspected dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical heart valves (MHVs) are preferred prosthesis types in many, especially younger patients who need surgical valve replacement. Although echocardiography is most frequently performed for prosthesis assessment during follow-up, ultrasound artifacts usually preclude a precise investigation of prosthesis function. Cinefluoroscopy (CF) is a simple and effective method to analyze and quantify opening and closing of prosthesis leaflets but requires careful visualization of the valve using optimal viewing angles. Here, we investigated the quality of CF studies in clinical routine

Patients' satisfaction with facial prostheses.

We assessed the "impact on wellbeing" and "satisfaction" of patients who had a facial prosthesis (of the ear, nose, or orbit) fitted in The Netherlands Cancer Institute. Patients had either an adhesive-retained or an implant-retained facial prosthesis between 1951 and 2011. We did a cross-sectional survey of 104 patients, then gave a questionnaire to the final study group of 71 (68%), a year or more later. All were satisfied with their prostheses (visual analogue scale (VAS): mean (SD) 8.1(1.5). The implant-retained group were the most satisfied (p=0.022), and the adhesive-retained group felt

Noninvasive imaging-guided ultrasonic neurostimulation with arbitrary 2D patterns and its application for high-quality vision restoration.

Retinal degeneration, a leading cause of irreversible low vision and blindness globally, can be partially addressed by retina prostheses which stimulate remaining neurons in the retina. However, existing electrode-based treatments are invasive, posing substantial risks to patients and healthcare providers. Here, we introduce a completely noninvasive ultrasonic retina prosthesis, featuring a customized ultrasound two-dimensional array which allows for simultaneous imaging and stimulation. With synchronous three-dimensional imaging guidance and auto-alignment technology, ultrasonic retina prosth
