Spontaneous remission of vision degrading myodesopsia of posterior vitreous detachment type.

PURPOSE: The study aims to observe the spontaneous remission of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)-type vision degrading myodesopsia (VDM) during long-term follow-up. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed VDM patients with PVD type that refused any treatment. The ratio and time of significant spontaneous remission of floater symptoms occurring were described. The associated factors with significant remission of floater symptoms were analyzed in the univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: In total, 179 patients with VDM were assessed. The mean age of all patients wa…

A mechanical model of posterior vitreous detachment and generation of vitreoretinal tractions.

We propose a mechanical model of generation of vitreoretinal tractions in the presence of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). PVD is a common occurrence with aging, and it consists in the separation of the vitreous body from the retina at the back pole of the eye, due to progressive shrinking of the vitreous gel. During this separation process, vitreoretinal tractions are generated at regions of high adhesion between the vitreous and the retina. Such tractions are mainly responsible for the creation of retinal tears, which can lead to retinal detachment. We describe the PVD evolution developi…

The management of retinal detachments associated with choroidal colobomas by vitreous surgery.

We used vitreous surgery to treat seven patients (eight eyes) with complicated retinal detachments associated with choroidal colobomas. All eyes had large choroidal colobomas and no evidence of peripheral retinal breaks. Small, atrophic breaks were detected in five of the eyes and were located in the base of the coloboma in four of the five eyes. Adjunctive surgical techniques were necessary and included cyanoacrylate retinopexy in four eyes, silicone oil tamponade in five eyes, and retinectomy in two eyes. Retinal reattachment was ultimately attained in seven of the eight eyes. The number of

SPONTANEOUS CLOSURE OF MYOPIC MACULAR HOLE TWICE WITHOUT POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT.

PURPOSE: To present a case of a myopic macular hole that spontaneously closed twice in the presence of a broadly adherent posterior hyaloid membrane. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 49-year-old man with high myopia and pseudophakia had a full-thickness macular hole in the left eye. The hole spontaneously closed in all retinal layers before the elective surgery, but the macular hole recurred one month later. The hole started sealing again spontaneously after one month, leaving a defect in the outer retinal layers. Four months later, the outer layer defect sealed and a lamellar macular hole d

iTRAQ Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of Vitreous from Patients with Retinal Detachment.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a potentially blinding condition characterized by a physical separation between neurosensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium. Quantitative proteomics can help to understand the changes that occur at the cellular level during RRD, providing additional information about the molecular mechanisms underlying its pathogenesis. In the present study, iTRAQ labeling was combined with two-dimensional LC-ESI-MS/MS to find expression changes in the proteome of vitreous from patients with RRD when compared to control samples. A total of 150 proteins were fou

Posterior vitreous detachment and macular anatomical changes - a tomographic-electroretinographic study.

AIM: Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a physiological phenomenon due to aging characterized by separation of the vitreous cortex from the retina and may induce a variety of pathological events at the vitreoretinal junction. The aim of this study is to highlight in vivo anatomical and functional changes in early stages of PVD allowing the correct treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Non-consecutive case series; optical coherence tomography (OCT) relies on analyzing the reflectivity of coherent light from different anatomical interfaces within posterior vitreous and retinal histological layer…

Anomalous posterior vitreous detachment: a unifying concept in vitreo-retinal disease.

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is the consequence of changes in the macromolecular structure of gel vitreous that result in liquefaction, concurrent with alterations in the extracellular matrix at the vitro-retinal interface that allow the posterior vitreous cortex to detach from the internal limiting lamina of the retina. Gel liquefaction that exceeds the degree of vitro-retinal dehiscence results in anomalous PVD (APVD). APVD varies in its clinical manifestations depending upon where in the fundus vitreo-retinal adhesion is strongest. At the periphery, APVD results in retinal tears and …

Vitreous intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in uveitis complicated by retinal detachment.

AIMS: The vitreous levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM-1) were investigated in uveitic eyes undergoing vitrectomy for retinal detachment (RD) or other complications, and the presence of this molecule was related to disease activity and vitreous levels of the cytokine tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha), known to upregulate ICAM-1 expression on various cells. METHODS: Vitreous and serum samples from 23 patients with either active or quiescent uveitis undergoing retinal surgery were examined for the levels of immunoreactive sICAM-1 and TNF alpha by ELISA methods, and

[Outcome after vitrectomy in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and dense vitreous opacities].

BACKGROUND: In some cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment dense vitreous opacities can delay the diagnosis and prevent a scleral buckling procedure. In these cases a primary vitrectomy is necessary. These results of vitrectomy are of current interest, because intra- and postoperative complications are comparable to the group of patients with retinal detachment and clear media, in which primary vitrectomy is discussed today as an alternative method. PATIENTS AND METHODS: After redetachment and trauma were excluded, we reviewed the charts of 40 patients (40 eyes), who underwent vitrectomy

Identification of Potential Biomarkers for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Associated with Choroidal Detachment by Vitreous iTRAQ-Based Proteomic Profiling.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with choroidal detachment (RRDCD) is a complicated and serious type of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). In this study, we identified differentially expressed proteins in the vitreous humors of RRDCD and RRD using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) combined with nano-liquid chromatography-electrospray ion trap-mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry (nano-LC-ESI-MS/MS) and bioinformatic analysis. Our result shows that 103 differentially expressed proteins, including 54 up-regulated and 49 down-regulated proteins were ide
