Of 400 Washington State family practitioners surveyed in 1986, 46% of those who give routine immunizations reported that they require written parental consent before administering vaccine. In all, 57% of respondents said they discuss diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, measles-mumps-rubella, and oral polio vaccine with their patients. Nearly half provide written information on these immunizations, except for inactivated polio vaccine, for which fewer than 20% of the physicians surveyed provide verbal or written information.

IMPORTANCE: Human prion disease surveillance is critical to detect possible cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other acquired forms of prion disease in the United States. Results are presented here that describe 12 years of surveillance in Washington, the only US state that has reported the presence of classic bovine spongiform encephalopathy, an animal prion disease that has been shown to transmit to humans.

Homelessness has not previously been identified as a risk factor for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. We conducted an observational study at an urban safety-net hospital in Washington, USA, during 2012-2017. Hospitalized adults with RSV were more likely to be homeless, and several clinical outcome measures were worse with RSV than with influenza.

During August 22-26, 2003, four injection-drug users (IDUs) in Yakima County, Washington, sought medical care at the same hospital with complaints of several days of weakness, drooping eyelids, blurred vision, and difficulty speaking and swallowing. All four were regular, nonintravenous injectors of black tar heroin (BTH), and one also snorted BTH. This report summarizes the investigation of these cases, which implicated wound botulism (WB) as the cause of illness.

In October 2001, four cases of inhalational anthrax occurred in workers in a Washington, D.C., mail facility that processed envelopes containing Bacillus anthracis spores. For the first time in Washington, D.C., an in-depth analysis of counterfeit pills has been performed as part of a larger initiative to understand the city's illicit drug supply. Over a 56-month period, 567 pills that were physically identified as a pharmaceutical were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography flame ionization detection (GC-FID). PURPOSE: Exchange sex, the exchange of money or nonmonetary items for sex, is associated with sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. We sought to identify prevalence and characteristics associated with exchange sex among District of Columbia (DC) high school students.
