Muco-cutaneous candidiasis in two pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.

In two distinct commercial swine herds, poor weight gain and an increased number of animals showing wasting were observed among nursery and growing pigs. Cases of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and infection with Haemophilus parasuis had been previously diagnosed in these herds. One growing wasted pig from each herd was necropsied and showed enlarged lymph nodes. Pseudomembranous material adhered to the dorsum of the tongue, soft and hard palate in case 1, and in case 2, fibrinous material was seen as whitish plaques on the oesophageal surface with hyperkeratosis of the non-

[Cerebral salt wasting. Half a century of a largely undefined syndrome].

Peters made the original description of the cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) in 1950 in three patients with hyponatremia that he assumed to be secondary to natriuresis of cerebral mechanism. Few years later, Schwartz describe the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) in two patients with bronchial carcinoma, with characteristics similar to CSWS. Wijdicks gave clinical entity to CSWS when referring that it is the prevalent cause of hyponatremia in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, and stressed the risk of secondary cerebral infarction if restrictive plans

Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome. We need better proof of its existence.

It is widely believed that the cerebral salt-wasting syndrome (CSWS) exists as an entity distinct from the syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion, and that it is characterized by evidence of severe renal salt wasting that results in volume depletion and hyponatremia. Proof of the existence of CSWS as an entity requires documentation of renal salt wasting and volume depletion. The present review has been undertaken to examine the evidence that the CSWS is a separate entity. In this effort, we have discussed various methods of documentation of volume depletion, and then reviewed reported cases

Cerebral Salt-Wasting Syndrome in a Patient With Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

A 37-year-old female with a medical history of recently diagnosed active pulmonary tuberculosis and a new intracranial lesion presented with altered mental status, nausea, and vomiting for two days. An initial physical examination revealed that the patient was euvolemic. Laboratory findings revealed a serum sodium concentration of 105 mEq/L. During her admission, she was initially managed with lactated ringer solution in the emergency department, followed by 3% normal saline in the intensive care unit, and, eventually, on oral sodium chloride and fluid restriction on discharge. Once she was st

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome due to tuberculous meningitis; a case report.

A 58-year-old male presented with fever, nausea, and vomiting since 15 days along with irritability and confusion since 5 days. His laboratory reports showed low serum sodium, serum osmolality and uric acid. Computerized tomography (CT) scan of brain revealed age-related changes. While on lumbar puncture (LP) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination, CSF protein, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and total leukocyte count (predominant lymphocytes) were all increased. On his 14th day of admission, his serum sodium was 116 mEq/l and he had a high urine output. Fluid restriction was tried in order to

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome in a patient with primary CNS lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: In patients with severe central nervous system (CNS) diseases, life-threatening hyponatremia results from two main causes: the syndromes of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) and cerebral salt wasting (CSW). Clinical manifestations of the two conditions may be similar but their pathogeneses are fundamentally diverse. Distinguishing SIADH from CSW is based on the differential diagnoses of dilutional hyponatremia due to an excessive amount of water in the body (SIADH) and depletional hyponatremia caused by extensive natriuresis (CSW). METHODS AND RESULTS: We rep

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome: a review of aetiology, diagnosis and pathology.

This review paper concentrates on the aetiology, diagnosis, and pathological aspects of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). PMWS was first recognized in Canada in 1996 as a new emerging disease which caused wasting in postweaned pigs. Since then, PMWS has been recognized in pigs in many countries. The syndrome is caused by a DNA virus referred to as porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), which is classified in the family Circoviridae. PMWS primarily occurs in pigs between 25 and 120 days of age with the highest number of cases occurring between 60 and 80 days of age. The diagnosis of PMWS

Testosterone therapy in HIV wasting syndrome: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Many HIV patients develop weight loss, which increases morbidity and mortality. We aimed to assess the effects of testosterone therapy on lean body mass, total body weight, over-all exercise functional capacity, and perceived quality of life in patients with HIV wasting syndrome and its adverse effects. We systematically reviewed randomised, placebo-controlled trials that compared the effects of testosterone therapy with placebo in HIV patients with wasting. Eight trials met the inclusion criteria and 417 randomised patients were included. Only six trials used lean-body mass, fat-free mass, or

[Cerebral salt wasting syndrome secondary to head injury: a case report].

A case of cerebral salt wasting syndrome secondary to head injury is reported here. A 4-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital with head injury. Neurological examination revealed no abnormal findings other than consciousness disturbance. Plain skull X-ray demonstrated a linear fracture of the bilateral parietal bones, and CT scan demonstrated subarachnoid hemorrhage of the tentorium of the cerebellum. He gradually improved, but on the 6th day deterioration of consciousness developed. At that time CT scan demonstrated no abnormal findings. Biochemical analysis showed hyponatremia (116mEq/L)

The role of body composition measurements in wasting syndromes.

Wasting is a state of nonvolitional weight loss that frequently afflicts patients with cancer or those infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Body composition measurements afford a more clinically relevant assessment of an individual's functional capacity, energy stores, and prognosis. Several techniques of body composition measurements exist, each with selected advantages and disadvantages. This review summarizes the methods and the utility of body composition analysis.

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and cerebral/renal salt wasting syndrome: similarities and differences.

Hyponatremia (sodium levels of <135 mEq/L) is one of the most common electrolyte imbalances in clinical practice, especially in patients with neurologic diseases. Hyponatremia can cause cerebral edema and brain herniation; therefore, prompt diagnosis and proper treatment is important in preventing morbidity and mortality. Among various causes of hyponatremia, diagnosing syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) and cerebral/renal salt wasting syndrome (C/RSW) is difficult due to many similarities. SIADH is caused by excess of renal water reabsorption through inappropriat

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome distinct from the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH).

Two cases with pituitary tumour developed postoperative hyponatraemia which was not caused by inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. The one case with non-functioning macro-adenoma showed severe hyponatraemia (116 mEq/l) on day 11 after trans-sphenoidal surgery in association with diabetes insipidus (DI). The patients was treated by aqueous pitressin and saline administration to control urinary output and keep positive salt balance at the same time. The other case with GH-producing macro-adenoma showed progressive negative sodium balance with the total loss of 644 mEq resulting in hy

Recent Advances in the Etiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Marmoset Wasting Syndrome.

One of the primary challenges encountered in managing captive callitrichids is a group of gastrointestinal disorders that are collectively known as Marmoset Wasting Syndrome (MWS). Unfortunately, MWS is still not well understood. It is suggested that MWS has a multifactorial etiology; stress, infection, malnutrition, malabsorption, and enteritis or colitis may be associated with MWS. Usually, animals demonstrate more than one of the following clinical signs: progressive weight loss, alopecia, chronic diarrhea, muscle atrophy, hypoproteinemia, and anemia. Recent advances in diagnostics, mostly

[Herpes simplex encephalitis complicated with cerebral salt wasting syndrome: a case study].

A 78-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a 4-day history of fever and confusion. Physical examination revealed oral dryness and decreased skin turgor. Blood tests showed hyponatremia (121.5 ‍mEq/l), and cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed positivity for herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) via polymerase chain reaction. He was diagnosed with herpes simplex encephalitis and initiated acyclovir treatment. The hyponatremia was diagnosed as cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) and treated with hypertonic saline infusion and fludrocortisone. The cerebrospinal fluid HSV-1 DNA became negat

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) following a head injury was initially suspected, and water restriction and saline fluid replacement were initiated. However, the Na+ level did n

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome: postoperative complication in tumours of the cerebellopontine angle.

Cerebral salt wasting (CSW) is a rare complication in posterior fossa tumour surgery. We present two patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumours who developed cerebral salt wasting postoperatively. Both patients deteriorated in spite of intensive fluid and salt replacement. On CT scan the patients presented mild to moderate ventricular dilation, which was treated with an external ventricular drainage. After the resolution of hydrocephalus, fluid balance rapidly returned to normal in both patients and the clinical status improved. Identification and treatment of secondary obstructive hyd

[Hyponatraemia in patients with neurosurgical disorders: SIADH or cerebral salt wasting syndrome?].

Patients with neurosurgical disorders often present with hyponatraemia. Two mechanisms account for hyponatraemia in these patients: the Syndrome of Inappropriate Secretion of Antidiuretic Hormone (SIADH) and Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome (CSWS). The two entities differ in their volume status. In SIADH, volume is expanded due to ADH-mediated renal water retention, but in CSWS, volume is diminished as a consequence of renal salt wasting, most likely attributable to an increased secretion of Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) and Artrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP). Since it is clinically difficult t
