Low-permeability, non-reactive barrier walls are often used to contain contaminants in an aquifer. Rates of solute transport through such barriers are typically many orders of magnitude slower than rates through the aquifer. Nevertheless, the success of remedial actions may be sensitive to these low rates of transport. Two numerical simulation methods for representing low-permeability barriers in a finite-difference groundwater-flow and transport model were tested. In the first method, the hydraulic properties of the barrier were represented directly on grid cells and in the second method, the

To assist in emergency preparedness for a biological agent terrorist attack or accidental pathogen release, potential contaminant levels and migration pathways of spores spread by urban stormwater were evaluated using a Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The high temporal-spatial resolution SWMM model was built using spore concentrations in stormwater runoff from asphalt, grass, and concrete collected from a point-scale field study. The subsequent modeled contamination scenarios included a notional plume release and point releases mimic

It is now widely recognized that contaminant release from low permeability zones can sustain plumes long after primary sources are depleted, particularly for chlorinated solvents where regulatory limits are orders of magnitude below source concentrations. This has led to efforts to appropriately characterize sites and apply models for prediction incorporating these effects. A primary challenge is that diffusion processes are controlled by small-scale concentration gradients and capturing mass distribution in low permeability zones requires much higher resolution than commonly practiced. This p

Snakes are purported to drink by sucking water into their mouths and then compressing the oral cavity to force water into the oesophagus. Video recordings of drinking behaviour in 23 snakes representing 14 species from three families, combined with simultaneous recordings of water volumes consumed, show that all the snakes vary widely in the amount of water taken in when drinking. This variation is not correlated with kinematic events. Kinematic recordings and indirect measurements of water flow suggest that moving water into the mouth can be decoupled from the processes that move water into t

Juvenile American alligators in outdoor pens moved out of and into the water at sunrise and sunset, respectively. When the natural light cycle was extended with artificial illumination, these movements gradually shifted into phase with the altered light cycles; therefore, the amphibious behavior was modulated by a circadian rhythm cued by light. Movement between land and water was characterized by a decrease in body temperature, which suggests that it is was not simply a proximate heat-seeking response. After the movements had been in phase with the altered light cycles for a time, they sponta

Renewable groundwater and surface water supplies are insufficient for the current worldwide urban population as water demand is increasing rapidly. Usage per capita in urban areas transcends 160 liters per day. Climate change is projected to increase water demand even more. Sources of surface water from stormwater runoff can be used to fulfill this requirement. The main objective of this work is to assess the water supply and demand in the dry conditions of the Coimbatore region, Tamil Nadu, India, and to use the water evaluation and planning method to create a model for supply and demand in t

The objective was to introduce a new technique for visualizing the three-dimensional (3D) movements of velopharyngeal-related muscles using high-speed cine-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on T2-weighted sequences. The evaluation of phonation- and water swallowing-related events was performed in 11 healthy subjects. Specifically, whether cine-MRI could precisely visualize normal velopharyngeal function during these two events was examined. The 3D movements of the soft palate, superior pharyngeal constrictor muscles, and levator veli palatini muscles were visualized in all 11 subjects. A

BACKGROUND: Movement of the lacrimal canalicular wall has been speculated to occur during blinking. Movement of the common internal ostium has been observed under nasal endoscopy, and pressure changes in the lacrimal canalicular cavity have been observed with a pressure sensor; however, lacrimal canalicular wall movement under pressure changes has not been observed.
PURPOSE: To examine movement of the lacrimal canalicular wall under intracanalicular pressure changes using dacryoendoscopy.
METHODS: The authors examined 20 obstruction-free lacrimal canaliculi in 10 patients. A dacryoendoscope

Sediment flushings of hydropower reservoirs are commonly performed to maintain water resource uses and ecosystem services, but may have strong impacts on fish communities. Despite the worldwide scope of this issue, very few studies report quantitative in situ evaluations of these impacts. In June 2012, the drawdown flushing of the Verbois reservoir (Rhône River) was performed and subsequent impacts on the fish community were assessed, both inside the reservoir (fish densities by hydroacoustic surveys) and downstream (short-term movement and survival of radio tracked adult fish). Results showed

The Ranger 3 ore body is an early Proterozoic U ore body in the Alligator Rivers U province, Northern Territory, Australia. It has surface expression with a redox front located between 30 and 50 m below the surface. The ground water U concentration and (234)U/(238)U AR signature in the top 10 m of the weathered zone are reported for 357 samples collected over 4 wet seasons, at 5 depths, along a transect in-line with the hydraulic gradient and along the centre line of the ore body and its associated dispersion halo. The results show that the weathered zone displays a general U isotope feature f

Railways currently play an important role in sustainable transportation systems, owing to their substantial carrying capacity, environmental friendliness and land-saving advantages. Although total pollutant emissions from railway systems are far less than that of automobile vehicles, the pollution from railway operations should not be underestimated. To date, both scientific and practical papers dealing with stormwater management for rail tracks have solely focused on its drainage function. Unlike roadway transport, the potential of stormwater pollution from railway operations is currently mis

A method is described to evaluate two methods of phosphorus (P) management in lakes using aluminum sulfate (alum)--in-lake and tributary (inflow) treatment--and compare the resulting in-lake P levels. For in-lake treatment, a technique is described to calculate the optimum alum dose based on measurement of "mobile P" in lake sediments. Mobile P is defined as loosely sorbed and Fe-P, the fraction of sediment P subject to release under anoxic conditions. A linear relationship (r2 = 0.90) was found between P-release rate and the mobile-P content in sediment cores. Addition of alum to aliquots of

Background: Stroke rate (SR) is a critical determinant of swimming speed and performance; however, the relationship between upper-limb movement frequency assessed on land and SR in water remains unclear. Methods: This preliminary study examined the association between dry-land upper-limb movement frequency and in-water kinematics in ten male competitive swimmers (15.23 ± 1.06 years). Dry-land upper-limb movement frequency was evaluated through two maximum-effort trials consisting of 10-12 circular arm movements performed under a straight-arm condition (STRSR) and a swimming-technique-simulated

1. The monitoring of developmental stage and under-water dissection were used to examine the initial aeration of the respiratory system in domestic fowl embryos. 2. A virtually complete absence of free air within the chorioallantois was found before the beak had begun to make 'beak-clapping' movements, even when the membranes were already draped over its tip. 3. During the 'beak-clapping' stage, but before the membranes were pierced and before respiratory movements had begun, many embryos were found to contain free bubbles of air within the trachea and air sacs. 4. All embryos in which the res

Urban stormwater runoff could be a significant non-point source of surface water pollution during India's monsoon season (June - September). This study aims to characterize the stormwater runoff in the Powai region of Mumbai and investigate interlinkages between precipitation characteristics and runoff quality. The levels of conventional water quality parameters (physical, chemical, microbiological) and emerging contaminants in the runoff were determined. Runoff samples were collected from various outfall locations (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4 and SL5) which drain into the Powai Lake. Runoff sampling w

The influx of rainfall runoff intensifies phase partition of the pollutant in receiving water bodies, and the phase partition plays an important role in the speciation transformation and spatial partition of pollutants. In this study, the Meishe River on Hainan Island, China, was adopted as the research area, and palladium (Pd) was selected as the target pollutant. The purpose of this study was to explore phase partition of Pd in receiving water bodies and the underlying influential mechanism. The partition coefficients (Kds) of Pd between water and suspended particulate matter in receiving wa

Fluoride-rich groundwater is well known in granite aquifers in India and the world. This study examines the fluoride content of well water in different parts of Talupula area of Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. It also focuses on fluorides and their relationship to water-quality parameters and their impacts on humans through groundwater resources. Most parts of the area covered in this region are inherently enriched with fluorides threatening several ecosystems. The fluoride concentration ranges between 0.78 and 6.10 mg L⁻¹. The alkaline pH and high bicarbonate are responsible for release o

The groundwater petroleum contaminant remediation effect by air sparging was investigated in an oil field. The results show that the soil geological situation has great influence on the air distribution, and the shape of air distribution is not symmetrical to the air sparging (AS) well as axis. The influence distance in the left of AS well is 6 m, and only 4 m in the right. The petroleum removal rate can reach 70% in the zone with higher air saturation, but only 40% in the zone with lower air saturation, and the average petroleum removal rate reaches 60% in the influence zone for 40 days conti

The presence of lenses such as tailings slurry, frozen soil, and saturated zones disrupts the continuity of tailings dams and their normal seepage patterns, elevating the seepage line of the dam body and significantly impacting local stability. This study, to investigate how lenses affect the stability and failure mechanisms of tailings dams, employs numerical simulation and physical models and constructs a model of the tailings dam, incorporating tailings clay lens and void lens, to investigate variations in hydraulic gradients, seepage velocities, seepage flow, pore water pressure, and the p

BACKGROUND: The European wels catfish (Silurus glanis) is a large, physostomous apex predator of freshwater habitats. Its current range expansion both within and beyond its native distribution, is strongly influenced by global warming. This study investigates patterns of diving behaviour of a wels catfish population that has recently increased significantly in a large, deep, cold-water peri-alpine lake. METHODS: Pressure and temperature loggers were implanted into 42 free-ranging wild caught wels catfish in Lake Constance. High-resolution data from 13 recaptured individuals was subsequently an
