Workers' compensation claims among private skilled nursing facilities, Ohio, 2001-2012.

INTRODUCTION: Skilled nursing facilities have one of the highest rates of occupational injury and illness among all industries. This study quantifies the burden of occupational injury and illness in this industry using data from a single state-based workers' compensation (WC) system. METHODS: Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation claims from 2001 to 2012 were analyzed among privately owned, state-insured skilled nursing facilities and are presented as claim counts and rates per 100 full-time equivalents (FTE). Worker, employer, incident, and injury characteristics were examined among all claim…

METHODS: Retrospective study of 874 injured workers receiving elective LSF from 2008 to 2016 in the Victorian workers' compensation system. WorkSafe Victoria's claims data were used to inf…

Online Perspectives of Workers Navigating Workers' Compensation Systems: A Content Analysis of the Reddit Social Media Platform.

BACKGROUND: Social media platforms are increasingly used by the general public as a source of information on health-related and legal concerns, among other topics. Fish harvesters with injuries' accounts of their experiences with the workers' compensation system.

The workers' compensation system was established to provide fair access to compensation for workers who have experienced occupational injury and can no longer work. It was expected that such a system would reduce individual legal claims. Evidence indicates that many injured workers proceed with a variety of appeals indicating dissatisfaction with the current system. The fishing industry is extremely dangerous. The aim of this research was to explore the experience of injured fish harvesters who were making use of a compensation system. Interviews were held with a sample of injured in-shore and…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on perioperative outcomes, postoperative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and minimal clinically important difference (MCID) achievement among workers' compensation (WC) claimants undergoing minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MIS-LD). METHODS: WC patients diagnosed with herniated nucleus pulposus undergoing single-level MIS-LD were identified. Patients were divided into 3 groups: Non-obese (<30 kg/m2), Obese I (≥30 and <35 kg/m2), and Obese II/III (≥35 kg/m2). PROMs were collected preoperatively and at 6 weeks, 1…

Retrospective mortality cohort study of Italian workers compensated for silicosis.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate cause specific mortality in a large cohort of Italian workers compensated for silicosis. METHODS: The cohort included 14 929 subjects (14,098 men and 831 women) compensated for silicosis between 1946 and 1979, alive on 1 January 1980, and resident in Tuscany (a region of central Italy with 3,547,000 inhabitants). Mortality follow up ranged from 1980 to 1999. Vital status and the causes of death were determined by linkage with the regional mortality registry and with the national mortality database. The cohort mortality rates were compared to the rates of the local refe

Post-Acute COVID Among California Workers' Compensation Claims Filed in 2020-2022.

OBJECTIVES: To examine sociodemographic risk factors for post-acute COVID (PASC) among California workers' compensation (WC) claims in 2020-2022. METHODS: We matched WC claims to SARS-CoV-2 test data, augmented with external sociodemographic data, and estimated odds ratios (OR) using logistic regression models. RESULTS: PASC accounted for 7% of the 206,375 COVID and PASC cases. PASC cases were more commonly 30-49 years old, female, longer tenured, and in healthcare and protective service occupations compared to acute COVID. The highest PASC OR were among workers 50-69 years old, and workers …

The influence of preoperative disability in workers' compensation patients undergoing lumbar decompression.

BACKGROUND: Typically, Workers' Compensation (WC) patients present with worse disability preoperatively and may report inferior postoperative outcomes following lumbar decompression (LD) surgery. However, it remains unclear whether severe disability influences postoperative outcomes in WC patients. This study aims to evaluate the influence of Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for WC patients undergoing LD surgery. METHODS: Patients included in this study were those of WC status who underwent LD surgery and had PROM scores. Patients were split …

Oil and Gas Extraction Industry Workers' Compensation Claims and Proposed Safety Interventions.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed Ohio workers' compensation data to identify potential prevention strategies for common oil and gas extraction industry claims. METHODS: Claim rates for 2001-2018 were calculated per full-time equivalent employee. Descriptive analyses on free-text descriptions of lost-time (LT) claims (>7 days away from work) identified common characteristics among claims and injured workers. RESULTS: Among 3134 claims, 860 (27%) were LT. The industry group, drilling contractors, experienced the highest LT claims rate, whereas the cost from servicing contractors was the highest.…

Pre-injury health status of truck drivers with a workers' compensation claim.

Truck drivers are a vulnerable population due to the high number of workplace injuries and fatalities predominant in their occupation. In Australia, the road freight transportation industry has been identified as a national priority area in terms of creating preventative measures to improve the health and safety of its workers. With an environment conducive to poor nutritional food choices and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, many barriers exist to creating a safe and healthy workforce. Thus, the current study aimed to describe the pre-injury hospital-recorded health conditions and health servi

Heart rate changes in functional capacity evaluations in a workers' compensation population.

OBJECTIVE: Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) have been utilized by healthcare professionals for over twenty years to provide an objective assessment of an individual's ability to safely perform functional work activities. Biomechanical observations have been established as a reliable method of determining safe maximal performance levels during dynamic lift testing in FCEs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate heart rate (HR) responses between participants in two performance levels (biomechanical safe-maximal and sub-maximal) and to attempt to establish a minimum threshold for HR chang

Patients with workers' compensation claims have worse outcomes after rotator cuff repair.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated varying correlations between Workers' Compensation status and the outcome of rotator cuff repair. However, none of those studies have formally accounted for potential confounding factors with multivariable analysis. We hypothesized that patients with Workers' Compensation claims who undergo rotator cuff repair have worse outcomes, even after controlling for confounding factors. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-five patients (including thirty-nine with Workers' Compensation claims) who underwent unilateral primary repair of a chronic rotator cuff t…

Workers' compensation, return to work, and patient satisfaction after carpal tunnel decompression.

In the study reported here, we assessed satisfaction and return to work in workers' compensation (WC) patients after carpal tunnel decompression. Eighty of the 362 patients who underwent surgery met the study criteria; 42 of the 80 were found for follow-up; 40 of the 42 participated in the telephone questionnaire; 15 (38%) of the 40 received WC; and 39 (98%) of the 40 returned to work. Mean age of the 40 respondents was 47 years, and mean follow-up was 29 months. WC involvement was not related to return to work and did not affect satisfaction with overall outcome but was related to dissatisfac…

Outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in patients with Workers' Compensation claims.

A general perception exists that outcomes of orthopaedic procedures in patient's with Workers' Compensation claims fare worse than those of patients without such claims. We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in patients who have Workers' Compensation claims. This minimum 2-year follow-up study analyzed the occupational, functional, and objective results of patients who underwent arthroscopic-assisted anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
